MINGORA: Thousands of people from across the region throng the Swat River daily to bathe as a relief from the scorching heat and excessive power cuts.

Bathers are seen on both sides of the river from Kalam valley to Landakey area.

“This Swat River means a lot to us. Not only does it irrigate our lands but also it gives us water for domestic use. Also, we come here to cool off during hot weather,” Samiur Rehman of Mingora told Dawn.

Akbar Shah of Watkey area said electricity remained suspended in the area for more than 14 hours daily, while there were also complaints of low voltage.

“In such a situation, this river gives us the best option to relax,” said Akbar Shah, of Watkey area.

The youths jumping into and swimming in the river complained that the excessive loadshedding caused the suspension of water supply.

“I along with friends bathe and wash clothes in the cold water here. We spend three to four hours daily here and return just before iftar time. Spending time at home fasting especially when there is no electric supply is very difficult and so, we come here for respite,” he said.

Labourers said they finished work early and headed for the river to bathe.

“I come here daily after finishing work and even take a nap along the river’s bank. I go home ahead of iftar time,” said Abdul Jabbar, a fruit market porter.

The children said they enjoyed dipping in the cold water.
