PEKING: The Peking “People’s Daily” today [May 25] denounced “the increasing collusion between the United States-British imperialists and the Soviet revisionists for an open intervention” in the Middle East.

“Comrade-in-arms of the Arab peoples in anti-imperialist struggle, the 700 million Chinese people stand staunchly on the side of the people of Syria, the United Arab Republic and other Arab countries and unreservedly support their just struggle against the aggressive schemes on the US imperialism and Israel,” the paper, quoted by New China News Agency, said.

The daily in an article signed by “Commentator” said that President Johnson had sent a “secret letter” to Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin, after which the Soviet Government issued a statement “which mentioned not a single word about the aggressive scheme of US imperialism, but instead clamoured about doing its utmost to prevent a violation of peace and security in the Near East”.

The paper noted that British Foreign Secretary George Brown was in Moscow for talks with Soviet leaders, and said United Nations Secretary U Thant “is also doing his utmost in the service of US imperialism”.

“All this shows that US imperialism and the Soviet revisionist ruling clique are making a deal at the expense of the Arab peoples’ interest and are trying to stamp out the Arab peoples’ struggle against the United States,” the paper said.

The official Chinese news agency in a long commentary expressed similar view-points, and said about last Tuesday’s Soviet Government statement: “Always making it their job to undermine the revolutionary struggle of the peoples of the world, the Soviet revisionists declared in the statement that they will continue to do everything in their power to intervene in the Middle East. This is a clear indication that they would do everything in their power to sabotage the Arab peoples’ struggle against US imperialism. — Agencies
