Pakistan bounce back to beat Windies, level series

Pakistan beat the West Indies by 74 runs in the second one-day international at Providence, Guyana, on Sunday after the home side’s lower order once again threatened to steal a surprise victory.
The three-match series now stands level at 1-1. The last match will be played on Tuesday (April 11).
Pakistan bowlers were able to defend a relatively modest target of 283 through accurate, penetrating stuff, especially in the first 25 overs. But in almost a replay of the first match when the Caribbeans came from behind to score a famous win, their lower order gave the visitors a fright, adding over 133 runs for the last four wickets.
Jason Holder, leading the side in the absence of Carlos Brathwaite, led the charge with a defiant, swashbuckling 68.
Hassan Ali was the chief wicket taker for Pakistan with a haul of five for 38 runs.
Agencies add: Earlier Babar Azam stroked yet another hundred against the West Indies as Pakistan rallied from an indifferent start to total 282 for five.
Reinstated in his favourite number three spot in the batting order, Azam held a faltering innings together and then accelerated towards an unbeaten 125, his fifth century in ODIs and fourth in five innings against the Caribbean side. He received critical support from Imad Wasim, the all-rounder finishing unbeaten on 43 in an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 99 which released the shackles of previously disciplined West Indian bowling on a pitch lacking the pace and bounce from the first match.
Pakistan found free scoring difficult at the start and lost both openers to excellent leg side catches by wicketkeeper Shai Hope off fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel and Alzarri Joseph.

In ODI, every ball has winner. If zero run is made than balling side got a plus point. If 1 to 2- runs are made than that ball result is equaliser. If 2+ to 4 runs are made than batting side won that ball.

Pakistan is 167 for 4 after 36 overs. 14 overs left. In 14 overs, if Pakistan makes 98 runs than it would be good batting ... but it means 265 runs (7 runs per remaining over). So from here, one can hope that Pakistan makes 265 runs (at least) and that also if Pakistan plays well, and get lucky. Wicket is same as last time, so 265 cannot be winning score. Anyhow, I hope WI batsmen get unlucky and Pakistani bowlers do not ball as pathetically as Pakistani batsmen batted (well, still batting). Let see.

I hope I am wrong, but my feeling is that, Pakistan would be lucky to reach 250. Most likely, Pakistan would score 240. I do not know if that score is winning score, but if Pakistan wins, than it would be a lucky escape from losing the series.

One can see that in last 3 to 4 overs, Pakistan accelerated the inning and they could have continued if more overs were available, but 50 overs ended. All shows that if they accelerated the inning earlier, they would have got more runs.
Well, ideally, team should accelerate the inning from first over making 10 to 12 runs, and if 5 or 6 wickets fall by 30 overs than only they should play with care, so that they can consume all overs making maximum runs. But if wickets do not fall, than they should make 200 plus runs (even 300 runs) by 30 overs.
Keeping the wicket to end hence playing slow in limited overs is neither desirable nor important, as inning ends (after 50 overs) even if team lost zero wickets or 9 wickets. So, slogging should start from first ball.

class player and what a timely 100, i hope this drop catch is not going to cost Pakistan this game, ok so babar at 3 and sarfaraz i hope at 5 thats the only two positions taken other than that on form i say kamran akmal makes it to Champions Trophy i still think Pakistan can get no 2 position to fakhar/ talat and no 6 to imad with no 7 i am hoping will go to shadab 8 we can again have another alrounder, i mean if aamir junaid wahab and hasan are taken to task by this 2nd string of WI batting then y waste time and money on them get anwar ali and bhatti in the side they both are class with bat and can surely bowl as well as these 4 can, hasan ali being young i say we keep in the side... wow watching the game aamir and juni are taken to cleaners.

One can see from WI inning, that they are hitting without worrying about losing wickets. It means, they would keep scoring and scoring fast, as long as they have wickets. It also means that if Pakistan could not take all 10 wickets, WI would win. Well, if they manage to score 200 runs by 35 overs, than even if they lost 6 to 7 wickets, they could start playing carefully and their tail enders could win the match easily.
This is how present day limited over matches are played, that is, to make maximum runs without caring about losing wickets. There are 11 players, 10 wickets to lose, so scoring fast runs cannot be compromised to keep wicket intact, so that by 50 overs team only lost 6 to 7 wickets.

Babar Azam is yet another good batsman but his attitude is more suitable for the test side. He might end up scoring most centuries in shorter format but the way he bats creats pressure on rest of the team to bear the burden of his slow scoring rate. He improves his strike rate right at the very end of the innings and if he gets out then Pakistan will always end uo 60 runs short and loose the match.

Pakistan badly needs consistent hard hitting batsmen to score decent runs around 350 and above otherwise they will keep on losing like they are now. Since his comeback, Amir has been such a disappointment. Look for bowlers like Wasim Akram and Waqar younis. What happened to the weapon of in swinger? I don't see any good in swinger bowler in the team.

Bowlers have done their job well and it seems Pakistan would win easily. But that does not mean, Pakistan batted well. This wicket is good for over 350 runs, but weak WI side lost to Pakistani bowlers (unlike last match). On the other hand, WI started strong, and if they had not lost wickets they could have won easily.
Playing slow and then accelerating is not fine, because if player gets out than due to them team can lose. In this game, Shahzad, Kamran, Shoaib and Hafeez got out early making 67 runs in 109 balls. If Babar also had got out early (what could have happened), than Pakistan may not have reached even 200 runs. Fortunately, Babar did not got out and Pakistan reached 282. Such score (282) against good team on this wicket was insufficient, but seems OK against WI.

@Waseem Sarwar: Kamran made a lot of runs in PSL, but his average in ODI is still 26 runs per inning with SR: 84. How about test matches where his average is pathetic 30 runs per inning with SR: 65. Well, even in T20, his average is pathetic 21 runs per inning with SR: 119. So, you cannot say that a team can rely on him making too many runs or making runs too fast. That is different matter than some people may ignore all his failed innings and start roosting about innings he did make some run and that is the reason his average is slightly better than bowlers (because of those some innings). Else, he normally gets out at low score.
But, Umar and Kamran, both are better batsmen than Shahzad or Hafeez when it comes to limited overs, though both are not suited for test. On the other hand, Hafeez is fine in limited overs because of his bowling, but should come down the order and should learn to slog.

@Waseem Sarwar Oh really, 280+ is easily chaseable by top teams. Batting was pathetic and is not suitable in today's modern cricket. West Indies are weak team so Pakistan can beat them easily. Batting slow to get less than 300 runs will most likely be chased today by batsmen who play fast from the start of their innings scoring 350+ on batting wicket batting first and then you have a better chance of winning. The first match was a proof that Pakistan did not play aggressively and thought 308 was enough. You need power hitters like Sharjeel who can score above 100 SR in ODI.

If top batsmen (first 6) cannot take quick runs playing first 40 overs, than why they expect from players who are in team as bowlers to take quick runs and increase the score fast? Bowlers are there not to increase score fast. That is duty of batsmen, simple as that. Pakistani batsmen want to score 120 runs in first 30 overs, 50 runs in next 10 overs, than expect 130 runs in last 10 overs. Why not try to score 70 to 80 in first 10 overs?
Well, it is this mindset that make them lose more matches than win, because they rarely pass 300 mark, what most world teams are doing regularly.

Pitch is getting slower and in the 3rd match ,they will use the same pitch and it will be difficult to bat on as it will get further slower and the ball will turn more.If any team score around 300 it will be good score .

@WASI, well you a partially right. We do need power hitters like Sharjeel who happen to be honest professionals but not all 280 scores are chased even these days. This pitch was hardly a 350 pitch. Ball wasn't coming on to bat properly and fee balls were spinning a lot. Smart teams access the pitch and then make up their mind on what sort of total they want to set. If everyone started going for 400 on every pitch, we would see more 140 all-out scores in ODIs. Pakistan's defeat in first ODI was due to ineffective bowling and Sarfraz losing his senses. On a ground where 232 in average first innings score, 308 and 282 should be defended Everytime.

Though threatened again in this ODI, Pakistan bounced back and won the match to level series 1 all. Real test comes on Tuesday when both the teams meet again for the decider. West Indies Cricket Team is slowly showing glimps of its past. New talent / addition from Pakistan, especially Shadab Khan, is proving its worth.

I wish to see saud shakeel, fakhar zaman and hussain talat in the side as all r alrounders and are as Majestic as Babar is, no pwoer hitter and with aamir and junaid taken to cleaners and wahab in the previous game, anwar and bilawal must be given 2 whole series, with anwar ali glorious indippers removing williamson and Elliot on consecutive balls great bowling, yes he was taken for runs but he is not end over specialist i mean look stokes of eng is top bowler but was hit for 24 on 4 balls in WC final so you cannot say, his over all performance is better than any other Pakistani alrounder with his ability to hit sixes.
if Aamir r wahab are not good enough please drop him we need two seamers to bowl at death

Obviously, Pakistani selectors have shown incompetency in selection for whatever reason and given Sarfraz a team that is not appropriate for limited overs. Selector's incompetency (for whatever reason) is harming Pakistani young cricket talents, most of who (along with most Pakistanis) believe that connection, Parchi, self interest, nepotism, provincialism, like-dislike, etc have taken over selection criteria in Pakistan cricket, and merit is now a secondary factor in selection.
Anyhow, once this team of 16 players got selected (with inappropriate players), Sarfraz should use merit to play them in playing 11. In my opinion playing 11 from available lads should be (according to batting order):
Kamran, Sarfraz (should take responsibility and open), Babar, Fakhar, Shoaib, Imad, Hafiz (he is still a reasonable bowler), Shadab, Amir, Junaid and Hasan.

@Pakfan: In old days having anchors was fine, but in present day limited over matches, there is no space for anchor. Every batsman have to score fast and should have high SR. One batsman consuming 150 balls scoring 100 runs, means team guaranteed to lose against any good team. It is obvious, because there are only 300 balls. When 300 runs in ODI is becoming norm, than other batsmen have to make 200 runs in remaining 150 balls, and that is difficult task.
Well, if top batsmen are tuk-tuk, and then one batsman make 100 runs in 150 balls and other batsman also make 100 runs in remaining 150 balls, than team would make 200 runs plus extra, or around 215 runs (if lucky). No one can expect that with 215 or even 250 runs score, a team could win matches.
Unfortunately, Pakistan have collection of tuk-tuk batsmen. All want to score 100 runs consuming 150 to 170 balls. How can any team could win with such pathetic set of batsmen in team?

Let me give an example. Let say: Kamran made 55 runs in 75 balls, Shahzad made 50 in 70 balls, Babar 60 not out in 80 balls and Hafiz 50 not out in 75 balls, extra 10 runs. Total would be 215 runs for 2 wickets (including extra runs).
Now, with total of 225 runs for 2 wickets, can Pakistan win any match? ... and if not, then who failed? Kamran with his 55 runs (75 balls), Shahzad with his 50 runs (70 balls), Babar with his 60 not out (in 80 balls) or Hafeez with his 50 not out (in 75 balls)?
Well, for some, all made 50 hence were successful, and they proved their worth.
But fact is that, all 4 failed (regardless of they scored 50), as all scored too slow for limited over matches, and that is why with 225 target (that includes 10 runs as extra) given by Pakistan to any reasonable team, no one can expect that Pakistan would win.

Lets keep the pathetic players who play at 60-70% strike rate and not go the aggressive batting approach because any top of 5 teams will chase 250-280 down in 45 overs. You will lose 90% of matches which is the reason for so many losses in the previous series due to worst batting. Strengthen the batting to meet the top 5 first, then bowlers will win you the match. West Indies lost this game due to poor batting on a 300+ pitch.

@SarAH: You are right. Last 3 to 4 batsmen won't have batting skill, so how can team expect them to make runs, leave quick runs. If they do not have batting skill, than team should not expect much from them (quick runs or even runs). For some tail enders, it is big deal if they survive few balls even if they do not score. Obviously, team could not rely on them making quick runs or even runs.
That means, most of the runs have to come from bat of top 5 to 6 batsmen, and if they make slow runs than total would be low at the end of 50 overs. It also means, SR of top 5 to 6 batsmen should be 90 or more (each one of them), and they should start scoring from first ball, than only team could make 275 plus score in 300 balls (50 overs). There is no place for tuk-tuk players or anchors. For all batsmen, make quick runs or get out trying, should be motto of team. For the team, a quick 25 in 20 balls should be considered better than 50 in 60 balls.

@Shazad This is exactly what I was trying to tell to everyone including @Waseem Sarkar that you can't afford to play slow in ODI anymore. You have to score fast at run a ball and above 100% SR like Sharjeel to score a very big target on a batting pitch around 350 and beyond to challenge the top teams on their home soil to win matches 90% of the time. Batsmen play aggressively and fearlessly. There is no tuk-tuk anymore since 2015. 2011 World cup was different as many teams still scored less than 300 runs but that batting strategy has changed by 2015 by consistently scoring beyond 300 runs on average batting first.

@SarAH: You should know that in ODI, SR is most important, especially if team has number of players with average over 35. If you want to compare career batting average and SR of top batsmen, than for example, I am putting down career averages and SR of top English 8 batsmen play in their playing 11 vs Pakistan 8 batsmen. You can see, think and would know why Pakistan is languishing at ranking 8 and 9 (England is ranked 5)
(England) ... Roy: Ave 40, SR 105 ... Hales: Ave 38, SR 95 ... Root: Ave 48, SR 85 ... Morgan: Ave 38, SR 88 ... Buttler: Ave 36, SR 118 ... Stokes: Ave 30, SR 99 ... Ali: Ave 26, SR 100.
Now compare that with Pakistani tuk-tuk lots:
Shazad: Ave 34, SR 73 ... Kamran: Ave 26, SR 84 ... Umar: Ave 34, SR 86 ... Babar: Ave 56, SR 90 ... Hafeez: Ave 32, SR 75 ... Malik: Ave 35, SR 82 ... Sarfraz: Ave 35, SR 89 ... Imad : Ave 42, SR 100.
Compare, especially look at SR, think, and you would know why Pakistan is ranked 8.

Did you guys notice the reaction of Sarfraz if any player make a mistake, compare to Misbah and Azhar which used to remains flats and no reaction what so ever.
