A "hardcore terrorist", involved in various terror activities including Bannu jailbreak, was hanged at district jail Kohat on Thursday after being sentenced to death by a military court, a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations said.

Tahir Shah, the hanged terrorist, was a prominent member of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the military's media wing said.

He was "involved in committing heinous offences relating to terrorism" across the country, the statement added.

Shah was also involved in an attack by insurgents on a jail in Bannu in 2012, which led to hundreds of prisoners escaping.

Nearly 400 prisoners, including militants, escaped from Bannu jail when more than 150 insurgents armed with guns, grenades and rockets stormed the central prison outside the restive northwestern town of Bannu.

The TTP had claimed responsibility for the attack on the jail in which a former member of the airforce, sentenced to death for an attack on former president Pervez Musharraf, also escaped.

Shah was also involved in an attack on law enforcement officials in which one solider was killed and another was injured, the ISPR statement said.

According to the statement, Shah had confessed to his offences before the magistrate and the trial court.
