Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan (MQM - Pakistan) backed PPP's bill to change the names of universities being built in Karachi and Hyderabad bearing the name of Muttahida Qaumi Movement founder and leader Altaf Hussain, presented by Nisar Khoro in the Sindh Assembly on Monday.

Talking on the occasion, MQM's Faisal Subswari said that MQM believes in owning the country it will not hinder its progress.

"We will make sure that the next generation of Muhajirs in this country do not face the discrimination that is prevalent at the moment," Subzwari said.

Talking about progress in Sindh Subzwari said, "At the same time we wish that PPP's government, which has both the budget and finances, announces that it will create government universities in Hyderabad."

Concluding his address Subzwari said, "Actions speak louder than words, governments are not remembered on the basis of impressive speeches, rather on the basis of the work that they leave behind as their legacy."

The provincial cabinet had earlier decided to present the bill in the assembly for the change the name of universities to Fatima Jinnah University.

A statement issued by the Chief Minister House on Monday announced that the universities will now be named after Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah's sister Fatima Jinnah, and added that the Sindh cabinet has already endorsed the decision.

In a meeting of the provincial cabinet, it was agreed that the universities will be named Fatimah Jinnah University and an amendment bill will now be presented before the provincial assembly to seek approval of the lawmakers, the CM House spokesperson said.

Addressing a news conference following the cabinet meeting, Sindh Health Minister Sikander Mahendro said it was a joint suggestion by the cabinet members to change the name of the universities.

"After the statements given by Altaf Hussain, if we still establish a university under his name it will mean that we are not loyal to our jobs," he said.

Our conscience forced us to think a person who speaks against the country “should not be given so much importance”.

It is pertinent to mention that the Sindh Assembly had earlier approved a bill to establish Altaf Hussain University in Karachi and Hyderabad. But following the anti-state speech delivered by the MQM chief on August 22, 2016, the Sindh cabinet had decided to change the name of the proposed universities.

Real estate tycoon and chairman of Bahria Town Malik Riaz had in 2014 announced his plan to set up two universities – one each in Karachi and Hyderabad – to be named after MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
