SAHIWAL: Around 12,000 candidates have applied for 57 posts of Grade-1 advertised by the Directorate of Colleges in various public sector colleges of the division.

The posts include those of peons, laboratory attendants, drivers, kitchen staffers, conductors, midwives, sweepers, gardeners and watchmen.

Prof Bilal Ashraf, deputy director colleges, said these posts were vacant in nine colleges as well as the divisional directorate office. All aspirants were called to the Government Post Graduate College (GPGC) cricket ground on Sunday for attendance.

Prof Ikhlaq Hussain, the GPGC principal, while talking to Dawn said eight sections were established at the ground with each of them dealing with a separate college where posts were announced. He said the candidates, men and women both, listed themselves at the section of their choice for further processing.

The basic qualification was a matriculation degree, however more than 40 per cent candidates had graduation degrees.

Qazi Nasir, the colleges director, told Dawn that the department will consider matriculation for appointments against the advertised posts. There were several candidates with masters degrees as well.

The colleges where the posts were advertised included GPGC; Imamiya College; Government College For Women; Government College for Women, Farid Town, Sahiwal; Crescent College for Women; Government College Chichawatni; Government College Kameer; Government College for Women, Harappa; and the Directorate Office.
