Moments after a devastating bombing at Lal Shahbaz Qalander shrine in Sehwan, Sindh, the Pakistan military issued a strongly worded statement to "hostile powers", saying it will respond to such attacks.

In a short message posted to Twitter, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said, "Recent terrorist acts are being executed on directions from hostile powers and from sanctuaries in Afghanistan. We shall defend and respond."

"Each drop of the nation's blood shall be revenged, and revenged immediately. No more restraint for anyone," the army chief was quoted as saying.

He added that Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has appealed for "calm".

"Your security forces shall not allow hostile powers to succeed. We stand for our nation," Ghafoor quoted COAS Bajwa as saying.

At least 80 people were killed and scores injured in a suicide attack on the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan on Thursday evening. The attack is the fourth in a string of a shocking wave of militancy across the country, with Lahore, Quetta and Mohmand Agency struck in the last four days.

PM condemns attack

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that an attack on the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar is an attack on the progressive and inclusive future of Pakistan.

"The Sufi people predate Pakistan's history, and played an important part in the struggle for its formation," he said.

"An attack on them is a direct threat to Jinnah's Pakistan and will be dealt as such," the PM was quoted as saying in a statement released by his media office in Islamabad.

Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair, in his message of solidairty, said, "Sindh is a land of the Sufis. The terrorists have targeted the devotees to achieve their nefarious designs."

"This attack tantamounts to attack on the entire nation."

I condemn this attack on unarmed civilian population. Now it's time to eliminate all terrorists groups from Pakistani soil. It may cost Pakistan in short run, nevertheless very beneficial in long run.

RR_Bangalore Feb 16, 2017 11:42pm

I hope Mr. Bajwa will eliminate all kind of terrorism from his country!

aziz Feb 17, 2017 12:14am

waiting for your orders sir.

A shah Feb 17, 2017 12:58am

All words and no action.

Rohail Feb 17, 2017 01:00am

Please "Walk to Talk" because as pakistani citizens, we are getting sick of all the talkings. Army is the only hope as we are sick and tired of corrupt politicians.

Adil hussain Feb 17, 2017 01:14am

When bureaucrats and adminstration is busy in countering corruption charges it is the most appropriate time for antinationals and terrorists to be active. When ministers say Lahore blast is due to the ongoing protesters gathering similarly sindh blast is due to the gathering of worshipers, the terrorists feel encouraged. These heinous acts cannot be stopped by the govt alone but the uncalled for and irresponsible statement aggravates the agony of sufferers.

Sikku-Ludhiana Feb 17, 2017 01:12am

So sad to hear!

Salman Feb 17, 2017 01:18am

Sorry General, I don't agree with your statement. Since the departure of General Raheem the operation against terrorist had been stand still. I have not heard any significant movement in last two months under new commend!

Usman Feb 17, 2017 01:24am

Pakistan and Pakistanis need action and results, not rhetoric and optics.

Faiz Feb 17, 2017 01:29am

Such attacks are not a new had they worked on previous attacks they wouldn't have to vow a fresh revenge!

Atul Feb 17, 2017 01:30am

Do not let off those terrorists. Let them know they can't get away with this kind of acts. Punish through law, and let everyone know Pakistan does not accept any of this kind of acts, on them or on anyone.

VINAY Feb 17, 2017 01:59am

Rizwan Feb 17, 2017 02:15am

Why this has started happening all of a sudden after a long time one after another. Not much happened till the end of 2016. This seems to be properly planned and the targets are soft targets. General people should watch out and keep an eye in their areas on any suspicious activity.

sam Feb 17, 2017 02:15am

it is time for pakistan to stop playing good terrorist and bad terrorist game, and join hand with Afghanistan to clean this mess, otherwise no one will win

Vikas rehman Feb 17, 2017 02:29am

The key question is, terrorists were on the run when Zarb-e-azb was taking place. Over the last few months there was a lull in in the pace and government could not even decided about military courts. Did this provide the terrorist organisations the breathing space they were looking for to organise? For obvious reasons, an army operation cannot continue indefinitely, and civil sector has to take over. The army did a great job through Zarb-e-azb. Where is the civil government with its implementation of national action plan? The army identified a link between terrorism and corruption. What has the government done so far to break that link?

Ahsan Gul Feb 17, 2017 02:30am

Is Bajwa only vows verbally or going to take real action? We in Pakistan are so displeased and tired of listening intentions to rectify and corrective actions that we don't believe our government and politicians. The only institution that public has trust is military. Let us see in coming days. Respectfully

Iqbal Feb 17, 2017 02:38am

Why was there "restraint" in the first place?

There is no such thing as "Good" Taleban and "Bad" Taleban.

When will the "authorities" stop fooling themselves? This problem would have been nipped in the bud in 2001 if Gen Musharraf had the courage and wisdom not to differentiate between the two.

Innocent Pakistanis die for no reason when any extremist is ignored or judged not to be a threat.

IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Feb 17, 2017 02:46am

We are with you Pakistan Armed Forces. Pak Fauj Zindabad! Pakistan Paindabad!

Anwar Feb 17, 2017 03:32am

@M The State of Pakistan has failed majority of its citizen. This was bound to happen. 3% living in gated communities while the rest of citizenry living in a mighty struggle on a daily basis. Too many disenfranchised Pakistanis.

Akil Akhtar Feb 17, 2017 03:31am

How big is the terror infrastructure and who is funding this never ending terror even after we have killed thousands of them....

Sunny Feb 17, 2017 03:32am

No talk we want action.

lootra Feb 17, 2017 03:42am

It should be the government's call on the degree of retaliation or revenge and not army.

Be Happy Feb 17, 2017 03:40am

for how long we will only give statements and do no action. If Army knows where these attacks are being planned from. just go and get these SOB. Nothing will happen as life will go normal and everyone will forget what had happened in this week.

nadeem Feb 17, 2017 03:50am

With due respect sir, what have done so far after becoming COAS???

Ijaz Feb 17, 2017 03:52am

Unless this COAS goes after all terrorists and their sympathisers amongst elements of the clergy, I am afraid its just words.

Pakistan needs to wake up to the existential threat of extremism and return to Jinnah's vision of a secular republic.

Ahsan Feb 17, 2017 04:03am

@RR_Bangalore . Mr. Bajwa is yet to prove his ability to fight terrorism.

A Feb 17, 2017 04:54am

All of them should be eliminated ruthlessly , mercilessly..... hell with human rights violations and all that.... They are not human being at all ....

Nabeel Ahmed Feb 17, 2017 05:10am

"Respond" and "Defend" this strategy I am afraid to say is week. Our security forces need to be proactive. Rather than giving a response of something that happens. We need to act fast to prevent these attacks.

@viewPoint Feb 17, 2017 05:21am

No more words General. Just action.

Fawad Feb 17, 2017 05:56am

Must not show any restraint to any terrorist.Army must go after each one of these terrorists and their sympathizers/supporters all over the country (whether related to sectarian or otherwise) in a comprehensive manner and eliminate them all.

Akil Akhtar Feb 17, 2017 06:13am

RAW could not tolerate the peace returning to pakistan and our so called brothers in Afghanistan are helping them....shameful.

Masood Rizvi Feb 17, 2017 06:23am

@Raja farhat abbas

Just lip service, nothing will be done.

Sameer Feb 17, 2017 06:25am

I have little faith. This is a rinse and repeat strategy to simmer down currently boiling pots.

AXH Feb 17, 2017 06:37am

Neutral Feb 17, 2017 07:06am

What do you mean by no restraints? have you guys been holding back? Will you guys wake only incidents of this magnitude happen?

Most websites have published that ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack. Why is this information being kept away from Public.

Admitting would mean the failure of NAP. Does government and establishment want to save themselves from their failures to protect people.

Terrorists good or bad, need to be wiped out.

RJM Feb 17, 2017 07:25am

Why were you excercising restraint till now?

Ahsan Feb 17, 2017 07:27am

General Bajwa! You must come up like your predecessor to avenge with full determination the innocent blood of 75 unfortunate victims at Sehwan .Also the brutality in Lahore, Peshawar and other places of our beloved Pakistan should be dealt with strong hands.

Prof@uk Feb 17, 2017 07:32am

A Pakistani Feb 17, 2017 07:35am

Inhumane and barbaric act of terror groups. We know who is behind these acts. Armed forces should launch big operations to sweep and demolish sanctuaries in Afghanistan. My heart goes out to all the victims and families affected by this terror attack. Enemies of Pakistan will be defeated.

PAKISTAN FIRST Feb 17, 2017 08:04am

sk Feb 17, 2017 08:16am

We all Indians are sympathetic towards Pakistan & its citizens... suicide bombing is the most cruel form of Terrorism & heinous crime who deserves strictest punishment including his / her family members publicly. Only such action would deter people opting terrorism as profession /way of living or earning/ way of revenge.

Muneer Feb 17, 2017 08:16am

Seems to be just another statement.

Navin Devadiga Feb 17, 2017 08:36am

sajed syed Feb 17, 2017 09:05am

@Isha I agree with You Isha, with a proviso, We have to bear the consequences for the short-term but our children and grandchildren will live in a peaceful, continuously seeking of truth, scientific view-point and as Humans with innate qualities of love, compassion , tolerance, acceptance of diversity, devoid of any cult-club-mindset and belonging. What Mr. Bajwa and his soldiers have to do is to remove the fundamentalists along with their literature from schools, all government institutions and homes of every Pakistani. Mr. Bajwa has to follow Kamal Ata Turk and excel in reverting Pakistan to Indus Valley Civilization. Our biggest enemy is our |Catch-22-Cult-Faith-Belief|, Our downgrading from Great Civilization to Desert-ideology, beliefs and narrow-mindedness. Think!

HUM Feb 17, 2017 09:12am

@Raja farhat abbas we are with u in the hour of grief friends. Extremists are never good for any country, country like America learnt it in hardway, they might serve our interests in shortterm but long term they are good for anyone

Humayun ali Feb 17, 2017 11:23am

Please wake up! Don't want my kids to die

Mir Zair Feb 17, 2017 11:24am

It is not a good practice to just wake up after the incident. Reactive mode is understandable but more important is to remain in proactive mode 24/7.
Deliberate actions should be based on executable plan ready to go on a 24/7 basis, even if it is a big risk. Even thresholds can be used to manage the risk. Long term strategy needs plugging the gaps in the process due to the top down corruption that ensues from the institutions headed by front men. These compromises institutions have a direct impact on opening up various kinds of gaps at different downward levels, gaps with respect to security included.

Mir ZaHir Feb 17, 2017 11:25am

Short term strategy is to react and kill those who try tot kill innocent people. Short term strategy is to put out the fire. The long term strategy is to conquer corruption, plug the gaps due to the bad institutions with front men.

Paindoo Feb 17, 2017 11:26am

So we were using restraint against terrorists before? Please tell me I am reading this wrong :(

GCP Feb 17, 2017 11:33am

Pakitstan has to disown all forms of terrorism. Otherwise it will happen again again.

Alba Feb 17, 2017 11:34am

You had better get revenge, sir. The terrorists are making you look bad.

Kabir Feb 17, 2017 11:38am

Without concrete and verifiable actions on National Action Plan (NAP) no action will bear permanent results they will keep coming again and again first of all we have to close their nurseries and eliminate their mentors / supporters / handlers other wsie they will keep producing new terrorists it is as simple as that

Pakistan man Feb 17, 2017 11:42am

Yeah. That's what you get for the nation when you do away with military courts and leave innocents at the mercy of terrorists.

Kamal Gupta Feb 17, 2017 11:53am

The attack is heinous. No words are strong enough to condemn it. Like no words were strong enough to condemn the 9/11 attacks, the Mumbai attacks, and so on.

SAK Feb 17, 2017 11:59am

@annie Exactly! What restraint? Who had asked for or even allowed restraint. The General should wake up and face the reality -it has to be an all out no-holds-barred effort just to keep the terrorists at bay - let alone finishing them off.

Pakistani1 Feb 17, 2017 12:15pm

Gen sahib. People do not need more statements they need action to eradicate terrorism.

Ahsan Feb 17, 2017 12:15pm

General Bajwa! Do handle the miscreants responsible for Sehwan tragedy with iron hands.

KhwarIzmi Feb 17, 2017 12:20pm

MAK Feb 17, 2017 01:42pm

Faisal rana Feb 17, 2017 01:44pm

Stop with the maula jat statements and show some action. There should never have been any restraint to begin with.

Muhammad patel Feb 17, 2017 01:44pm

@NAS ya but it's government fault forgiving them space.

Feroz Feb 17, 2017 01:46pm

Whom does the General want to take revenge against ? There are hundreds of thousands of brainwashed extremists willing to kill for the flimsiest of reasons. Should the revenge be against the ideology that indoctrinated and radicalized them or against the Madarassas where it was propagated. Should the revenge be against those who trained them to be terrorists or those who recruited them and put the talent to use. Revenge against a shadow is simply not possible.

Muhammad patel Feb 17, 2017 01:46pm

@Ahmad zubair yes and for good. No one month operations.

HM Feb 17, 2017 01:57pm

After the APS attack it was understood there was no more restraint. While reaction is of course needed but please also affix who is responsible for the security and intelligence failures that allow these attacks to continue. We have huge standing army and police force and fund them by forgoing other key needs of the nation - as obviously we are not a wealthy or even balanced budget nation. So without involving emotion or patriotism, can we please get what we pay for? Or fire those that fail to do so?

Rahat ali Feb 17, 2017 01:59pm

@Raja farhat abbas Oh oh !! Really ....

Wajih Feb 17, 2017 01:58pm

Proud of our armed forces and trust they will take us out of these crisis. Combing operation should be started across the board as quick as possible, if politicians are resisting operation in Sind and Punjab, then just ignore them, country is in state of war, innocent people are being killed, and our politician are busy in their own vested interest. Pakistani nation must get united and eliminate all sort of terrorist groups.

Falcon1 Feb 17, 2017 02:16pm

Mansha Sherazi Feb 17, 2017 03:20pm

We have to go after the terrorist and those who are bringing up the terrorists under their patronage, we know that enemies are coward, timid and disoriented to targeting innocent human souls, but Pakistan as a state should thumb down both the terrorist and their lords. Coward Enemy!!!

D.K. PAMNANI Feb 17, 2017 03:32pm

Bad terrorism or good terrorism, both be eliminated.

Those blood sucker monster do not spare our women, children, sacred places and even our security personel. This is not happening in any other part of the world and other religions.

Skeptic Feb 17, 2017 04:09pm

All the pronouncements and promises of steadfastness notwithstanding, the continues cycle of attacks all over the country, and yet the willingness on the part of the government to absorb such carnage and loss of life, leads me to believe that there is more it than meets the eye.

The powers that be, are in the know of who, what and where, or even why behind this senseless violence, but seem unable and unwilling to use full force to tackle the menace. Least of all complete failure of law-enforcement and intelligence and ineffectiveness of the Police is glaringly evident.

It will take a lot more than tough talk to fight this menace. Actions speak a lot louder than all the words.

Mahmood Feb 17, 2017 04:14pm

In the final analysis, all the Nuclear arsenal is useless, when people are being blown to bits around the country, on almost daily basis. Who cares about the threat from external enemy, if you are even afraid to step out of your home or even engage in something as simple as pray or visit a shrine!

If the people cannot even feel safe within the country, they don't need to worry about a foreign foe. The enemy is within already. A $ million missile is useless to even protect one life in such a battle.

What a convoluted sets of priorities. This is how we got here.

Azmeen Feb 17, 2017 04:16pm

This should be the way forward for Pakistan.

Khan Feb 17, 2017 04:19pm

Pakistan inteligence agency are not doing there job properly.

Mobeen Feb 17, 2017 04:47pm

Why there was restraint before?

Kirby Feb 17, 2017 04:48pm

Yes, military and other law enforcement entities have ultimate responsibility to respond and defend against such terrorist acts. But what is the responsibility of the people ? Terrorists live among us, plan and execute while sutting, eating, staying amongst us. Lahore and other places attacked are not on borders, they are way in land. Someone is harbiring these terrorist among us. So, if we see something then say something. Everyone needs to stand up to defend Pakistan, not just our army. My two cents!

Ab qureshi Feb 17, 2017 05:22pm

I really miss raheel Sharif , he had the situation under control

BAXAR Feb 17, 2017 05:37pm

My best wishes with Sir Bajwa for his daring declaration, that is strongest in 'words' till date. I hope it is strongest in 'actions' as well.

And the day should arrive when terrorism dies across india/pakistan like it did in S.Lanka. And whatever issues remain between India and Pakistan are then tried to be resolved thru talks.

Talks would be meant to 'listen to each other' and should not involve the people who simply come with 'prior declarations of their wishes'.

Why were Restraints there to begin with? Proactive is lot better than being sorry after. Government knew that we are dealing with animals.

No more restraint ? Was there some restraint until now ??

This violent tragedy at a shrine that stands for peace and harmony for the entire human race is sad and beyond comprehension. Thank God! both the government and army have resolved to confront this barbarity. With you brothers and sisters in Pakistan

Sadly this person has lots respect. Everyone seems to know he is only after money all the time. What a great institution brought down by greed of one individual

However, in the long term, no measures now will work without the following 'bold' changes: 1. Judicial reforms. 2. Depoliticization of Police and bringing them on the military manner of independent functionality. 3. Amendments to the constitution seperating religion from politics. Restraining religious leaders to the mosques. 4. Ruthlessly dealing with corruption.

We are at War; innocous statements, cosmetic measures, artificial stories on the media and slogans without substance will not get us anywhere.
