Pakistan attains ‘second strike capability’ with test-fire of submarine-launched cruise missile
Pakistan on Monday successfully test-fired its first ever nuclear-capable submarine-launched cruise missile Babur-III, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said.
The range of the missile is 450 kilometres, the DG ISPR said.
"The successful attainment of a second strike capability by Pakistan represents a major scientific milestone; it is manifestation of the strategy of measured response to nuclear strategies and postures being adopted in Pakistan’s neighborhood," the military said after the test.
Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa congratulated the team behind the launch and the nation on the development, Maj Gen Ghafoor said.
The missile was launched from an undisclosed location in the Indian Ocean, Radio Pakistan reported.
It was fired from an underwater, mobile platform and hit its target with precise accuracy.
Babur-III is a sea-based variant of ground-launched cruise missile Babur-II, which was successfully tested earlier in December last.
According to Radio Pakistan, the newly-launched missile has been built with state-of-the-art technology, including underwater-controlled propulsion and advanced guidance and navigation features, augmented by global navigation and terrain and scene matching systems.
Babur-III also features terrain-hugging and sea-skimming flight capabilities to evade hostile radars and air defences, in addition to other stealth technologies.
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Zubair Hayat, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah also congratulated the nation on this landmark achievement, the DG ISPR said.

Congratulations to the armed forces
Yay. Great news.
Excellent - great going Pak armed forces
Bravo Pak scientists. Pakistan's missile technology is super. :-)
Congratulations are in order. Good Job!
Second strike capability established ::: great achievement
Many congrats to the R&D team. This is a major milestone in our conventional deterrance capability.
Congratulations to the armed forces and to Pakistani scientists.
Education missile should be the priority
Wow what an accuracy. Great work PN
Congratulations PAKISTAN
Excellent news...congrats to Pak on triad deterrence...
@MohammaD latif
Its not second its third. Pakistan can fire cruise missiles from a fighting plane as well (RAAD missile). We also have Chinese C802 cruise missiles which are fired from Navy frigates.
BRAVO. Great job done.
Wake up dear neighbor, come out of becoming regional police dreaming and embrace the reality and the reality is PAKISTAN IS STRONG & PEACE LOVING COUNTRY.
Very significant development. This gives Pakistan "Second strike capability" in a nuclear exchange. This is a game changer.
Can we lable it as a second strike capability?
Alhamdulillah, all the power to Pakistan and it's brave Armed Forces.
Money well spent.... while the general public has no access to a decent health service and education..... lets conquer the world!!
Priorities totally wrong.
Congrats Pakistan.
WOW!! Great News
This is really impressive and lethal addition. This will definitely shake military doctrine in the region.
Congratulations
@Pagrri Sambhal it is actually 3rd strike capability. Missile, airplane and now submarine.
Well done Pakistan but why can't we use similar efforts and resources to achieve milestones in other fields of life too. Why, for example, in 70 years, our researchers aren't still able to find research based knowledge to maximize our agricultural output.
This capability is undoubtedly a commendable achievement.
@Shahid You can ask this question from the politicians my friend. But wait you always have to select Shareefs and Zardaris then I would suggest don't waste your time by asking this question.
You know guys that , that is one of best work ever done. 450km is enough for Test and Trials ,
Proud of you all. A strong country needs strong defense. A big thanks to the entire team.
This is a major development, major breakthrough. Thanks and congrats to those who worked for this achievement. Long live Pakistan!
Alhamdolillah, Pakistan Zindabad. Good job Pak Armed forces.
It will bring arms balance in region.
@Ahsan Ali Elect good politicians for that.
Congrats ,
This adds to second and third strike capabilities
what is the need of time is our inner strength, It is in the roots, not the branches, that a tree’s greatest strength lies. unfortunately it has become weaker. when we can make so sophisticated weapons, so complex in design, why can't design the system of check and balance for our government.. Let us kick out all those illiterate from the senate and assemblies and put highly competent to rewrite our constitutions and device a mechanism based on honesty, truth, and justice... let us make sure that constitution is written or amended is not the politicians but by highly qualified think tank... and we will be a great nation and we can hold our heads up high in this world
Good effort !
Just look at the pin point accuracy of the missile in its terminal phase, such technology is mastered by very few countries in the world.
@khanm " highly qualified think tank... and we will be a great nation and we can hold our heads up high in this world "
When are you getting back the people who have settled abroad... and serving other nations after securing high quality education ? Do you think they don't want to return ?
Wonderful!!! keep it going.
@khanm totally agreed with you ..how nation survive without literacy and discipline go see the demo on the roads of big cities. BTW Peshawar and Karachi are the top 10 cities with most pollution
Fantastic achievement.... Yet again Pak missile systems are way ahead of India.
A significant milestone has been achieved... Pak now has a second strike capability.
Only 5 countries have a cruise missile technology...
@Ahsan Ali Did you said exactly these words when MEtro line or orange line was inaugurated ? or when hospitals were being built?
point is: Everything has its own importance..!
Congrats Pakistan..!!! Every country has a right to safeguard "its" borders.
@Ahsan Ali education bomb has already exploded. These milestones are the result of that.
When I see the situation in Pakistan from abroad two observations are clear. 1. Awesome efficiency of the armed forces and 2. Awful inefficiency of the political and civil service.
Good job!
Congratulations for achieving yet another important goal. Keep it up.
Congratulations !
This completes Pakistan's air, land and sea launched missile capability. This is good news for regional peace, as it establishes Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) status with India to prevent war. India had defied the world to start nuclear-weapons and missile capability which forced Pakistan to develop the same for self defence.
Well done to PAK Army. Keep it up good work.
Wowwwwwwww!!!!! What precision. Was that real?
Good one indeed
Good achievement.
@Yasser do you know the threats we face?
oh wow .. very nice, did think you guys could do that. serious achievement.. Many nations have done it, so you as well.
It's one of the great achievement! Long Live Pakistan
@Sheraz "You can ask this question from the politicians my friend. But wait you always have to select Shareefs and Zardaris"
They're the easy target ain't they? It's like not letting a kid past his teens and then blaming the kid for not getting mature enough .. Let's call spade a spade and blame those military rulers who have ruled this country for decades instead of weak politicians who got their turns merely every couple of years with full veiled interference from the agencies .. It was Zia who created the mess by encouraging madrassas and destroyed the already weak Public schools .. None of them brought any positive change education system or did any thing to control the over population rather did everything to make it worse.
@Tahir ' only 5 countries have ...'
The United States, Russia, United Kingdom, Israel, South Korea, Turkey, Greece, Iran, China, Pakistan and India have developed several long-range subsonic cruise missiles. These missiles have a range of over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) and fly at about 800 kilometres per hour (500 mph).
Check Google for other features and functions each country is having !
Congratulations Pakistan forces and engineers for this stirling success. May God give continued glories and sleeplessness to enemies.
Pakistan will be superpower soon.
Well done pak navy and Army!!!!
Bravo; Well done; Keep going.
@Nkj i am skeptical about Iran and Greece
Well done pakistan.
Alhamdu Lillah. Salute to PAK Armed forces. Congratulations Pakistan.
It's not to point an individual but readers must be aware of the meaning of SECOND STRIKE.
'In nuclear strategy, a second-strike capability is a country's assured ability to respond to a nuclear attack with powerful nuclear retaliation against the attacker. To have such an ability (and to convince an opponent of its viability) is considered vital in nuclear deterrence, as otherwise the other side might attempt to try to win a nuclear war in one massive first strike against its opponent's own nuclear forces.'
Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_strike
Awesome.
India and Pakistan should use these missiles which they have to target their poor because its obvious that more priority is given to increase nuclear and arms capability rather then using that money to eliminate poverty so might as well throw them on poor to eliminate their misery. This rat race is getting scarier day by day. PS I am a Pakistani and concerned about deteriorating political climate of South Asia
MashAllah well done....Very proud. Give the enemy nightmares.
@Yasser if you can't defend yourself, you wont need to eat....anything but what your enemy wants you to eat. Wake up.
Major acheivement Congrats to whole nation
@Khan. Have you ever thought why politician are weak because they are corrupt. They are always on weaker grounds and result is here. Shareef family and zardari are examples. How they can withstand in front of a common person even. I am not exempting generals from corruption but giving the reason why politician have no courage to stand for their power which constitution has given them.
Very significant development!
Great technical advancement and superlative achievement. Congratulations... !!!!!!
Congrats Pakistan.
Great news.
Congratulations to Pakistan for its achievement,
Congratulations. What a video. Pakistan Zindabad.
Long live Pakistan and its Armed Forces.
Congratulations to Pakistan for this missile
excellent!
That's how it's done!
This just made my day :)
@Ahsan Ali
I agree with you. But when your enemy is knocking at your door, priorities change. Freedom has a price and that is the price we are paying.
@Shahid "Well done Pakistan but why can't we use similar efforts and resources to achieve milestones in other fields of life too. Why, for example, in 70 years, our researchers aren't still able to find research based knowledge to maximize our agricultural output"
That is because Pakistan is trying to fight an imagined enemy although it's two enemy is internal.
Wow !
Seems a good development other countries should now stop providing aid to Pakistan as Pakistan has the capacity to develop its own missile now.
Congrats!!!!
Pakistani Army
Many many congratulations to Pak Army and Pak nation.
@Tahir India tested its sub-launched missile in 2014 that can hit targets 3000 km away. Get the facts right.
Nice job! Now the need is to increase the range of this missile.
@Yasser ...Defence of the homeland always comes first, without strong defence we have nothing.
Great job I'm proud of our Armed forces.
Now lets worry about poor for once, we can't have Hatfs and Agnis for two times meals who our poor folks are hungry in Indo/Pak.
What sometimes I fail to understand is..though we can make world class missiles, why can't we make a rail engine?
Well done , Pakistan Zindabad
@Ahsan Ali the ones who are involved are educated else would not be possible.it is education that made possible.
Superb show of power and technique. Conratulations Pakistan.
Our missile tests have never ever failed. Congrats to our brilliant scientists for such amazing feat.
Great news. Now we need to work on the range. Hope to see ranges in excess of 2000 kms in the near future to ensure that they can be fired from long distances. Keep up the good work!
Long Live Pakistan And its Army!
We need same dedication for eradicating load shedding and against corruption.
@Sheraz nice.
im sooo Happy Alhamdulilah keep it up huge shout out to brain behind theses projects love scientists
Can I ask a question of the Pakistani commentators here? Why is the enthusiasm so great when there is a story about weapons? I wonder about the priorities that so many people have?
How many here were patriotic enough to pay taxes that support the country? How many refuse to take part in corruption? How many to turn against injustice or intolerance? This is a enthusiasm that will turn around the country.
@Ahsan Ali : I like your "education missile"policy! Please tell the world how Pakistan's children who lack schools and teachers will be educated by this missile. Thank you.
@natureLOVER: How much marine life will be destroyed by each launch, 'natureLOVER'?
@Muhammad Usman ; but no escalation?
@BABAR : Skepticism is good as a philosophy in one's life!
Will done pak. Now fight curruption to win among nations.
Well done Pakistan. Congratulations!
Pakistan "Zindabad!"
How many poor can be fed by this missile!!!
Armed forces have always done good, considering what we started with. It is always the civilian governments (Crooks) keeps Pakistan in a bad shape.
This is a great work by the great team.
@Sheraz -> china as regional neighbour is very worried
@Yasser I agree that the priority should be education and health, but with the Indian designs to undo Pakistan looming over us, this money spent was the only amount left to be doing vertex to the said priorities? Why don't you protest to get the looted billions back from are so called leaders and diverted to these priorities? As far as my opinion goes, we should strengthen our survival first. Decent health and education can only be sought if Pakistan is there.
@GK India recognizes its diaspora as one of its greatest assets. Pakistan has 200 million people living within who are smart and capable. Stop looking for excuses. By the way, great achievement by the Pak military.
Excellent work. Congratulations to all involved in this highly technical achievement.
Well done team behind it. Congratulations to Pakistani Nation
Definitely It will bring more peace and stability in the region
Good job! But start focusing on electric power generation to make the country self reliant on its energy needs and its economic development!
great.
Congratulations Matter of great pride! Will help in keeping the balance of power in the region to an appropriate level !!
Congratulations
@Nkj Most of those countries are under massive debt US $16 Trillion China $14 Trillion others are near bankruptcy.
If it is for detente or deterrence it may be OK, but the first priority should be peace and well being of people, and that can be achieved by economic decisions like CPEC, CPEC is like a great economic hole where each nation can enter and benefit.
Well done Pakistan!
Achievement unlocked.
Heartiest Mubarakbaad to all my brother Pakistanis
Wonderful news... Congrats Pakistan
Great work
@khanm Totally agreed. Our armed forces and scientists have made us proud and now it is our collective responsibility to get rid of corruption mafia and elect honest and capable leaders who care for this country and not only their families and cronies. Responsibility lies with us now.
Shabash Jawano !!! Congrats to whole nation :)
@Sheraz Thebest comment
This is a stopgap solution. Pakistan needs a minimum of three nuclear submarines with ICBMs.
Congratulations to Pakistan,
It was a matter of when, not if, that Pakistan was going to do this test.
@Shahid This has been achieved by professional people working in a professional institution: the armed forces. Wjat you are saying falls under the civilian institutions which are known for corruption.
wow, never seen a missile launched from a submarine
I would be very happy, if it would be real.
@Truth = Me, too!
@ZAK I wish you could say the same about Pakistan providing Safety, decent infrastructure, Health, Environment, clean water and to its citizens as Arms race will not allow this.
Wow!! Another great news after pak won the world cup last year and with 4 Olympic golds and 2nd overall podium finish, second strike nuclear capability and successful mission to Jupiter and CPEC and pakistani film winning the oscar 3rd year in succession and the pakistani girls winning the Miss Universe crown 8th time in a row. This is great news and pakistan is truly a superpower. Tons of love.
@ABDUL MUQTADIR On this we are still better than our poverty stricken neighbors who brutalize kashmir and refuse to resolve it after 70 years ,yet spend billions on arms running up debt of $500bn
What a terrific news!! Waiting for it since long. Congrats to all Pakistanies.
@Ahsan Ali :
I guess this work is act of Educated people unless your forced to convince yourself that if was developed by ignorant people?
Now design a missile which, when dropped on enemy territory , will make them all friends instead of killing them .
@Sheraz well said!
Congratulations
@Sajid Rafique This is the best comment ever made.
Well done the increase in defense capability is exponential very soon I believe we would achieve all strike capabilities. But these are for the external enemies, what are we doing for our internal issues nothing at all. All kinds of game changers and cosmetic props promising some sort of distant utopia but nothing here nothing now.
National security is important! good job!
Pakistan need minimum 3 nuclear submarines with MIRV tipped ICBMs so one is always deployed when two are undergoing service. This will be a real strategic deterrence. Putting small tactical missiles on diesel submarines do not give strategic deterrence.
Very good. Keep it up.
@Nkj Perhaps you should check your facts. Greece has Submarines that fire from under the water? India? Are you kidding?
"@ahmed: we need economy, education, health , safety, social improvement. those are fundamentals to modern powerhouses" TRUE but in today's world when every big country is teeth & muscles need for security supersedes many rights.
World knows the truth.
@salman Have you pondered if we have clean water, electricity, paved roads, Education, Health centers/decent hospitals and clean air and environment and safet on streets to citizens?
@Masoud So, according to you in this time and age, let the people live below civilized life without clean drinking water, electricity, roads, clean air, no health institutions but we should live on borrowed money and US Aid and spent that all on Armed Forces and these missiles etc or F16 or Tanks and fight enemies created by bad diplomacy or no diplomacy?
Simply Awesome, much needed as well at times of aggression by others.
How is it possible that original research and development in missile technology never fails. All advanced countries have had failures while Pak experiments are always 100% success. What's the reason behind it.
@Shahid This is just video recording produced in a lab. Once food can be produced in a lab video, roads and hospitals constructed in a lab video and people educated in a lab video, Pakistan will be the envy of the world. Till then, we can be happy watching bollywood and our own ISPR videos. People have crooked minds to cheat the common man after spending billions of Ruppees in the name of defence.
@salman
Second Strike doesn't mean having different modes of transportation for the war head as you mentioned. It is about having the ability to respond back if subjected to nuclear attack - GOD forbids such a scenario.
It is to understand aircrafts, submarines, missiles and others are component of Second Strike rather than rather than elevated categories of Strike as First, Second, Third and so on.
In short First Strike is the country that initiate nuclear attack. Second Strike is the ability to sustain nuclear attack and able to Strike back with nuclear warhead.
@Sajid Rafique "Now design a missile which, when dropped on enemy territory , will make them all friends instead of killing them." US dropped a bomb in Japan in 1945. Today Japan and US are best friends. Sorry for my cynicism.
Congratulations to the armed forces and to Pakistani scientist ..Great job
