Right arm middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq on Sunday sailed past West Indies's Garry Sobers' as he scored his 9th Test century, playing at 6th number, reported espncricinfo.com.

Earlier, Sir Garry Sobers had achieved the world record with eight centuries on the same number at his team.

"In terms of Test runs at number 6, Shafiq is fifth on the list," said the report.

So far, Shafiq has played 46 Test matches and scored 2716 runs with average of 44.52 runs per match.

It was Shafiq's his first century in the fourth innings of Tests, the report said, adding that he had two fourth-innings fifties previously— 80 in Galle in 2012 and 56 in Johannesburg in 2012-13.

The record winning century is being seen as an upset. In recent past, Shafiq was showing a dismal performance as he had "averaged only 8.28 in his last seven innings, which included three ducks."

Meanwhile, Pakistan on Sunday equalled their previous best fourth-innings total — 382 for 3 while chasing 377 in Pallekele in 2015. Pakistani team is all set to break the record on the fifth day at the Gabba.

Pakistan are the only side to make two 350-plus totals in fourth-inning chases this decade.
