Published December 15, 2003

NAWABSHAH, Dec 14: Growers of Nawabshah district have urged the authorities to direct the sugar mills to purchase sugarcane at the fixed price of Rs41 per 40kg and issue purchase orders to growers instead of brokers.

Hakim Khaskheli, the district president of the Small Growers Association, while talking to newsmen criticised the Habib Sugar Mill management for offering Rs 31 per 40kg only for Tetron, B43-60 and CO11-48 varieties of sugarcane.

He said that the mill management had not given any notice to any grower during or after last season in this regard.

He alleged that the HSM was issuing purchase orders to brokers instead of growers, who were offering Rs31 per 40kg to growers for all varieties.

He informed that the Sakrand Sugar Mills and Al-Noor Sugar Mills were refusing to purchase L-126, L-116, Thatta-10 and HS-12 varieties of sugarcane from growers.

KILLED: A labourer was killed and another injured while digging a well in Mari Jalbani, Sakrand taluka on Sunday.

Ismail Khoso died on the spot and Misri Khoso got injured when the wall of well they were digging fell on them.

The injured was taken to nearby hospital for treatment.
