NEW YORK: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the UNGA on Wednesday expressed a desire to be part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as both leaders expressed satisfaction over the positive trajectory in Pak-Iran bilateral ties.

Rouhani lauded the PM Nawaz's vision which he said translated the CPEC into reality. Connectivity projects were recognised by both countries' leaders as vital to the progress of the region.

Rouhani said Iran considers Pakistan’s economic development as its own development. Both sides discussed opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the field of energy, especially oil, gas and electricity.

They noted that progress on Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline and electricity import from Iran would help Pakistan overcome its energy shortages in the coming years.

The Iranian president said there is a need for defence cooperation between the two countries, as they have a history of cooperation in this regard. Pakistan's security is the security of Iran, he said.

Nawaz apprised Rouhani of Indian brutalities in held Kashmir.

The Kashmiri people are victims of heinous acts of state-sponsored terrorism at the hands of Indian forces, Nawaz said, adding that the situation in the valley remains tense in the wake of the uprising after Wani's death.

The prime minister also stressed the need to build unity and cohesion within the Muslim world, particularly at a time of turmoil.

Rouhani extended an invitation to Iran to the prime minister. Nawaz accepted the invitation and said that he would visit Tehran soon.

Iran will be welcomed. This is a game changer now.

JQ Sep 22, 2016 04:25pm

Great great - Welcome Iran --- A triangle is always good. We are with you.

Dr.Arshad Sep 22, 2016 04:25pm

Excellent! Wise leaders know how to capitalize on opportunities. Afghani people must also benefit from this great project irrespective of the fact what people in Kabul think.

Pakistani Sep 22, 2016 04:24pm

Welcome. its never too late. we look forward for prosperity of our country as well as our neighbors.

JQ Sep 22, 2016 04:25pm

JQ Sep 22, 2016 04:28pm

If Russia China Pakistan and Iran comes together on a road then where India will go.

Junaid Shaw Sep 22, 2016 04:30pm

This is a very interesting development, Iran is a far sighted country. If India has any sense instead of being jealous and arrogant it should work on finding a middle ground and become part of this new mega economic boom. South and Central Asia represents trillions of dollars of market and a market that will continue to grow for many many years.

Indian Shia Sep 22, 2016 04:31pm

It will be interesting to see how India will react to this.

Observer Sep 22, 2016 04:31pm

@Indian Shia what happened to chabahar????

Eli Sep 22, 2016 04:32pm

Pakistan at this juncture needs to foster deep ties with friendly countries counter to India's nefarious designs

SAEED MASOOD Sep 22, 2016 04:34pm

This should be eye opener for Ashraf Ghani and specially all what he said about Chabahar in India, Iran should take a few steps backward from India and clearly mention that its relations with Pakistan are of more importance...CPEC is a game changer...

Adnan Mazher Khan Sep 22, 2016 04:38pm

Welcome aboard!! This can be a game changer. Best of luck. I support you on this.

Taimoor Khan Sep 22, 2016 04:40pm

More states having economical stakes in CPEC can only mean resounding success of the project. We should let both Iran and Saudi Arabia , used CPEC to export their oil and gas to China which is the biggest energy market in the world with billion plus people.

Adil Sep 22, 2016 04:39pm

Iran and Afghan both should be Part of this Economic Corridor.

Jia Muslim Sep 22, 2016 04:40pm

Why Iran should not be a part of CPEC? They are not Afghans.

M. Malik Sep 22, 2016 04:42pm

A great opportunity for Pakistan to change the status quo and take the lead in the Islamic word, with the help of Iran. I would trust Iranian partnership any day, over a pact with the Saudis.

Acer Sep 22, 2016 04:43pm

Most Welcome.

wahala333 Sep 22, 2016 04:42pm

@SAEED MASOOD game changer must be words of the week...dont get it anyhow so find new ones.

Bala Sep 22, 2016 04:42pm

@SAEED MASOOD Still you don't understand world politics. Iran, Russia will never take steps away from india because of the $, and they already announced they will prefer india over pakistan.

akzis Sep 22, 2016 04:44pm

No sir! Thanks.
We don't want another Kalbushan episode.
The trust is ruptured!!! And we're sorry about the trust deficit.
Mullah Mansoor also got hit on the way back from Iran.

jawaid Sep 22, 2016 04:44pm

Good news. The PM should accept this proposal. We must promote economic ties with Iran and leave behind the misgivings promoted by vested interests.

Arshad Sep 22, 2016 04:44pm

Vimal Sep 22, 2016 04:47pm

Sardar Khan Tarar Sep 22, 2016 04:49pm

Good news for Pakistan all around...See political stability can do wonders...!!

Dr.Arshad Sep 22, 2016 04:49pm

@M. Malik ...A balanced and mature approach need to be devised as both these countries are our bosom friends. So far pakistan has exhibited neutrality and this is the right strategy.

Smart Solution Sep 22, 2016 04:50pm

Yes, there may be road transportation from Gwadar port to Chahrbahar ports after CPEC road system is complete. Iran should be welcomed to ship its products using CPEC road systems. After CPEC completion even India should be allowed to use it, provided India has resolved Kashmiri dispute with Pakistan. Similarly, all those central asian countries should be able to ship their proucts south through Afghanistan, than on to CPEC road systems to Gwadar port for export to middle east & european countries. Pakistan needs to formulate its policy as how to get more traffic flowing on the CPEC road as quickly as possible to generate more revenue, so it would be a only a highway for use of export of products from china to middle east through CPEC roads and Gwadar port. Pakistan should provide 5 year concession road use tarrif to Iran, Afghanistan and central asian countries. Think it through, plan it, announce it, promote it, market the plan, get more traffic and generate revenue. Keep it simple.

Jai Hind Sep 22, 2016 04:50pm

CPEC is a game changer for China... Not for Pakistan.

@Akzis - Why are you Indians worried about it now when you always sermon us on economic development???

Jamil Sep 22, 2016 04:53pm

@JQ India should realise the fact, that its interest is best served by cultivating good relations with its neighbours and have excellent trade and economic cooperation for the prosperity of the people of the region.

Jai Hindu Sep 22, 2016 04:54pm

"The Iranian president said there is a need for defence cooperation between the two countries, as they have a history of cooperation in this regard. SAB Sep 22, 2016 04:57pm

Warm Welcome!

Masood Sep 22, 2016 04:59pm

China, Pakistan, Iran can RULE this part of the world. With Chinese products, Iranian oil and Gwadar port, the province of Baluchistan can be the industrial hub of Pakistan. Go for it Pakistan ! you will not get another chance like this one.

M. Siddique Sep 22, 2016 05:00pm

By all means Iran should be included to benefit from CPEC. Even India can be part of it if it changes belligerence against Kashmiris and Pakistan. Saber rattling by India is NOT conducive for peace.

Sheraz Sep 22, 2016 05:01pm

Pakistan is slowly but surely coming into the driving seat and India will eventually be on the losing side. India needs to let go its bullying attitude towards Pakistan and should sit across the table to discuss all outstanding issues with Pakistan especially Indian Held Kashmir.

Pakistani Sep 22, 2016 05:09pm

Well what happened to Indians claiming we will isolate Pakistan in the region. Everyone wants to have a piece of the pie. Its all about economics my Indian friends.

Time may distant us sometimes, but Brothers are always brothers...

adil Sep 22, 2016 05:15pm

Go for it NS, with this positive agenda we are behind our PM. It's not too late for Afghanistan to be a part of it, think positive and move Afghanistan ahead.

Amanullah Khan Sep 22, 2016 05:23pm

It is a good effort of PM in meeting the President of Iran in the sidelines of UNGA. Historically, Iran has been a tested friend in need. If not today Iran will become a core stake holder in CPEC tomorrow. The venues of potential trade expansions with Iran must be deliberated upon and agreements signed up sooner the better. Iran can not turn her back towards Pakistan because it is also not in their own overall interests. I had also suggested in a similar write up that our diplomatic circles can be mobilized to bring back our two brothers Iran and Saudi Arabia on a table to discuss peace and tranquility. Peace between the two nations will bring peace among all Muslim states. That is the need of the hour and shall help to set the direction of the misguided terrorists into a right direction.

ozzy Sep 22, 2016 05:50pm

@Iqbal Aswani saudi is a friend

Shahid Sep 22, 2016 05:59pm

Iran's participation in CPEC will make the project even better. Basically Iran is the biggest beneficiary of this link as Iran would be pumping all of its oil and gas up stream to China. Being closest to the delivery point Gwader oil pipelines, Iran could build pipelines from Nar to Shiraz to Gwader and get rid of oil tankers.

sana-1 Sep 22, 2016 05:59pm

We and Iran were and will always be together, we are bound by a relation India cannot understand! BTW I think Modi's policy is going in favor of Pakistan.....please continue..

P.s., Iran saw what was Chahbhar for and what is Gwader for and they definitely choose the right one!

Baaligh Sep 22, 2016 06:17pm

Very nice of the Iranian president to express his desire to join the CPEC. We should waste no time in thinking and thinking ....must accept the offer at the soonest and welcome Iran with open hands and mind. Very good opportunity indeed to have Iran on board and it would not be wise to ignore the offer....or treat the offer lightly as just an offer / desire.

Ahsan Gul Sep 22, 2016 06:22pm

Pakistan must and should invite and get her involved in this project. Instead looking to west we should have close ties with Iran, China and Russis.

M Akram Sep 22, 2016 06:27pm

We should accept this offer with open arms and work with Iran to develop Pakistan infrastructure badly lacking behind other South East Asian countries.

lafanga Sep 22, 2016 06:28pm

A friendly Pakistan is better for Iran than an unfriendly one. A friendly Pakistan will most likely stay neutral with Iran's conflict with the Saudis.

Jamil Soomro, NEW YORK CITY Sep 22, 2016 06:43pm

Finalize what has been started with the original objective(s), keeping window of opportunity open for inclusion for potential participant(s) in future in line with the original objective(s). Unless and until full scope and objective of CPEC is made public, i.e., is it merely 'economic', as the second letter 'E' implies, or more than that and to what extent, only then time will determines its future dynamics. It is that 'unknown' at this point which is making many edgy, envious and/or jealous.

Ghaznavi Sep 22, 2016 06:46pm

great development

Something Fishy Sep 22, 2016 06:56pm

I suspect Iran is primarily interested in connection of its highways from ChahBahar to Gawadar and using Gawadar. (of course also selling gas and electricity etc.)

That can also provide to Iran an alternate in case of gulf's closure by the USA!

We must be carful, rather very carful getting Iran formally in CPAC. Iranians are not dependable either.

Power of truth Sep 22, 2016 06:55pm

Ofcourse they want to be a part of CPEC because India asked them to do so. India wants the benefits of CPEC to shift from Pakistan. Iran needs to realize India is just using them just like they used Russia.

Something Fishy Sep 22, 2016 07:02pm

Iran was trying for it since a while and everybody knew it, in relevant circles.

ChahBahar, still, is nothing more than a fancy fishing port.

Iran also need to have an access to Gawadar for economic reasons!

Khwarezmi Sep 22, 2016 07:09pm

We should welcome those peaceful nations who can contribute and benefit Pakistan. Iran must in return also stop Kulboshan Yadev types of agents from using their soil against Pakistan and CPEC. Europeans and Americans should also be invited if possible so to give them a stake in the economic corridor. This is help the long term security.

Indians are not invited to the party of course. They have them selves to thank for that.

Pakistani Sep 22, 2016 07:13pm

Yes, but with extreme caution after Indian spy and other incidents to defame Pakistan, Iran is also partner in isolating and defaming Pakistan. CPEC is Pak-China initiative and definitely all other FRIENDLY neighbors can benefit including Afghans

kash Sep 22, 2016 07:27pm

Now we need a Union and I believe the Turkish President is trying to create one with Turkey, Iran, China, Russia and the other stans around the area with the exception of Afghanistan and India. Go Turkey

Economic interdependence will bring peace in the region. Entrance of powerful Iran in CPEC will give win-win outcome.

Pakistan strengthen ties with Iran. Current fast growing changing dynamics of the region demands good terms with Iran. Iran economy will grow very strong in near future. Always remember Iran was first country to recognise Pakistan in 47.

Sincere Sep 22, 2016 08:08pm

Iran can also solve Kashmir issue

Talha Sep 22, 2016 08:09pm

Iran you are more than welcomed to be a part of CPEC for the region's prosperity. Although Afghanistan has never been a sincere friend, we should also give them a chance to improve the conditions of everyday Afghanis through CPEC. China and Pakistan need to invite as many neighbouring countries as possible for CPEC. India should sadly be ignored for any share in CPEC because of its lies, hate and propaganda against Pakistan.

Syed - Sep 22, 2016 08:09pm

Talha Sep 22, 2016 08:18pm

It would be much much better for Iran to have good relations with Pakistan as Pakistan can act as a bridge between Saudi Arabia and Iran plus CPEC would bring much greater financial rewards for Iran than any financial deal with India. It would also be really really good for Pakistan and China to include Iran in CPEC. Pak-China friendship would benefit the entire region. India needs to stop acting as a bully to have any chance of any accommodation in CPEC.
