KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) Sajjan (CBA) Union has demanded that the civic agency workers who worked hard to lift and dispose of the offal of sacrificial animals during the past six days be paid honorarium and stern action be taken against those who had not worked properly.

In a statement issued on Friday, union chief Zulfiqar Shah said that the civic agency workers had worked for six days as the Bohri community sacrificed the animals on Sunday (Sept 11) and those belonging to Ahle Hadith sacrificed camels on Friday (Sept 16).

He said that over 18,000 civic agency as well as private workers during these six days disposed of over 1.7 million offal. He said that over 7,000 vehicles along with other equipment had been used to transport the offal to around 25 trenches dug up at various places in the metropolis.

The union chief said that now that the work has been completed, the next stage, as directed by the deputy mayor campaign, to spray insecticides and sprinkling of limestone would be launched so that the city environment could once again become clean.

He also demanded that all those workers who had worked during the Eid last year but had not yet been paid the honorarium be paid immediately. The workers had announced that they would not work during this Eid if the arrears were not cleared. However, as a goodwill gesture towards the newly elected representatives, and on their assurance that their issues would be resolved, they agreed to work. Thus, the arrears of last year as well as the honorarium for this year had to be paid to them, he added.
