Now that’s what I call memorising words in a creative and fun way! Yes kids, the website is BBC’s Skillswise initiative Look, Say Cover, Write and Check!

And it sure is a wonderful place to memorise your basic and not-so-basic words by simply looking at the words, then ‘covering’ them to see if you can recall the correct spelling. It’s almost like you are playing with a virtual friend.

The site doesn’t need any registration so you can start right away by choosing from the topics to get the words lists from such as health, money, work, leisure, travel, dates and time, etc.

Click Play, to memorise random words from your chosen list; say the words aloud so that your grey cells grasp the correct pronunciation and memorise; and then click Cover. This part will interest the younger kids as an animated vehicle covers the word and the user is asked to write it correctly.

Once all done, the answers, whether right or wrong make the score so make sure you memorise and write the words correctly. Another similar site is Look, Cover, write and check does the same job. Again, kids will find the ‘cover’ part interesting!

Here instead of a vehicle, an animated hand covers the word. Another difference is that there is no scoreboard on this site so users are free to go on with the game without getting worried about their score! The site also has ‘word lists’ submissions by other kids so one can check and see what other kids have added.

Kids can use these sites to practice and memorise words before they participate in any spelling championships at school and at national and international levels.
