MULTAN: Police on Thursday arrested a 36-year-old woman in Multan for throwing acid on a man allegedly for refusing her marriage proposal.
According to police, the woman reportedly threw acid on a 24-year-old youth after calling him at her house on Wednesday night.
Investigations reveal that the woman was angry at the victim for allegedly refusing her marriage proposal and fled the scene after committing the crime. She was, however, arrested on Thursday, police said.
The acid attack victim received 50 per cent burns and was shifted to Nishter Hopsital where police recorded his statement.
The victim's father claims that the woman is already married and has four children but still wanted to marry his son.
Between 150 and 400 cases of acid attacks are reported in Pakistan every year.
As many as 80 per cent of the victims are women, and almost 70 per cent are below 18. Such attacks are not aimed at killing the victim but to cause disfigurement, and often cause blindness, hearing loss and physical and mental pain.
Statistics show that a common trigger behind these attacks is domestic dispute. Besides domestic disputes, motives behind these cases include personal revenge, monetary and property disputes, rejection of marriage proposals, suspicions of illicit relations and marriage of choice.

I find it appallingly juvenile suggestions that government should control the supply, and easy availability of acid, or should steeply increase the price of this corrosive material which is mainly used in many industries - not just to burn a jilted lover or suitor. Think of the economic impact of such a stupid idea?
If a man or woman resorts to burning a suitor with Kerosene, perhaps some would be asking for ban on Kerosene, and matches too? If she had used a knife, we would see people asking for triple the prices of all blades and sharp objects? Perhaps regulate butchers and slaughter houses in case their equipment is used for such attacks??
Ridiculous ideas. And even sillier tactics by spurned suitors. It only validates why someone would reject your proposal - with such a temperament!!!

Whoever disfigures another human being or even any living being with acid is wrong. It is nothing but a short-lived rage that devastates the victim's entire life. It is the animal inside us that can have that urge to do so.

I see some people saying its a first, which is not the case. It is however, one of those rare incidents where a woman took a page of men's book, as over 90% of such attacks were perpetrated by men. Eitherway, I have always been a proponent of life sentence without parole for any acid attack, i deem it a heinous crime,whether the victim be a man or woman, albiet majority has been women. Although I am not a feminist.

I have been reading these stories forever. But, never once the reporter talked about how the acid was obtained by the perpetrator. I'm assuming this is not a household item. Can the administration have a check on the supplier and make them liable?

I suggest acid purchase should be tied to a mandatory family persons of at least 3 members. Note their ID card details and note it's purpose. If abused the 3 should be held responsible.

Its a first. Yes the Acid or any other chemical should only be sold to professional people that use them for industrial usage. People wondering where this Acid comes from, it is also found in Car batteries. In Pakistan they use a very old, outdated technology, and those car batteries have cap that can be turned and battery can be easily emptied. In the West, they don't make those Liquid Acid Car Batteries anymore, here in US, now they use only Solid State Car batteries, which have no caps. In Pakistan they need to introduce State State Car Batteries that don't require any Acid, and there should be no openings or caps which can be used to drain the Acid chemical from the batteries.

Purchase of acid should be by license only. It is a deadly weapon but people can buy like water. How come it cannot be banned. Acid mafia may be? Men have been abused domestically mentally for ages stuck between mother, sister and wife and nobody seems to care, nobody has sympathy for men. He is still the primary bread winner, even in Western society. He cannot even share his abuse due to men being strong taboo. But we all know he has been abused and nobody cares.
