KHUZDAR: Senate’s Deputy Chairman Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri has said that following the action of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif against corrupt army officers, the government and civilian and political leadership should also launch a campaign against corruption.

Talking to journalists in Khuzdar on Friday, he said that corruption had badly damaged the country as corrupt elements had minted billions of rupees from the country and transferred it to foreign countries through offshore companies.

He said that his party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, lauded Gen Sharif’s action against the corrupt army officials.

Maulana Haideri said that the Panama leaks had unveiled the elements that committed corruption and were involved in financial embezzlement, adding that religious scholars never committed corruption.

“Religious scholars were not named in corruption scandals. Then why are law enforcement agencies raiding seminaries,” he said, adding that accountability and transparency were the need of the hour.
