At least 19 dead as passenger bus, truck collide near Faisalabad

MULTAN: At least 19 people including two children were killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a truck in Pakistan early on Wednesday, officials said.

The accident took place near Theekriwala in Punjab due to "speeding and reckless driving", senior police official Afzaal Ahmed Khosa told AFP.

"Nineteen passengers including two women and two children were killed," Khosa said.

Dr Naeem Hashmi, who works at the Allied Hospital in Faisalabad, said 15 injured people were being treated in the emergency department. Two of them were in a serious condition.

Poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving are cited as common reasons behind accidents in Pakistan. More than 4,600 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2013, which is the last year the government released official data on the matter.

Time to take strict action to impose traffic regulations. Those violating traffic rules should be punished like they are punished in other countries. New licenses should be issued to all drivers after passing the comprehensive test. In Islamabad I have never seen anybody stopped by traffic police other than those not wearing seat belts. Traffic police should also be educated that other than seat belts there are many other traffic rules which should be followed. Violating stop line, passing vehicles in a dangerous way, no shoulder check, over speeding, ignoring pedestrians and school zones are common mistakes.

Very sad. The road is also in very bad condition despite having heavy traffic. If it were a highway linked with Lahore it would be a 6 lane express way by now. Pity PMLN does not do anything outside Lahore.

RIP, 'Poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving are cited as common reasons behind accidents' when are the government going to address and implement the traffic laws too much replies on road travel by destroying railways is one other concern needs to be address to over come on these tragedies.

Owners of the vehicles should be held responsible for the unlawful death of passengers. Hefty fines should be imposed and money recovered should be distributed amongst the families of the victims. There should be personal injury law firms in Pakistan, who could sue these owners.

Two-way traffic on single road....a cause of almost 99% accidents in Pakistan. No double roads out of Lahore....

In Punjab all development funds go to Lahore and one can see double roads of good quality there. In Sindh all funds go to PPP's pocket. Therefore accidents will occur and keep occurring in both the provinces.
