Asia Cup disaster: Afridi’s job is safe, PCB chairman declares

Shahid Afridi will retain his position as the national T20 captain until the end of the upcoming World T20 despite a disastrous exit from the Asia Cup, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan said on Thursday.
Pakistan were knocked out from the Asia Cup Twenty20 following a five-wicket-defeat at the hands of hosts Bangladesh on Wednesday. Afridi's side have thus far only managed to beat UAE in the tournament while they also suffered a thumping loss to India.
“I promised Shahid Afridi that he will be retained as Pakistan captain until the end of the World T20,” said Khan in a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
However, the PCB chief hinted at the possibility of changes in the national side as well as the team management before the World T20.
“I should held responsible for the team’s poor performance as well,” Khan said, calling for accountability within the PCB.
Shaharyar revealed that he had expressed dissatisfaction over the inclusion of several player in the Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup and World T20 — but the final decision had to be taken by the selection committee.
“The selection committee took decisions after the input of the captain and the coach.”
The PCB chairman said he had also consulted Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq over Pakistan's recent performances.

Of course. Afridi who can do no wrong even when he gets out on duck when a captain's knock is required. It must be disheartening to be a Pakistani player, growing up watching technically sound batsmen who could elevate an innings on their own regularly and to be 'blessed' with a captain like Afridi who never learned the meaning of a dot ball.
If the PCB has any spine, many of the team and management staff will not be present for the WC T20.

Promised !!! This is professional sports,strictly based on performances and not some chat over tea ! Afridi has been a loosing proposition from quite a while and his post match chat after Bdesh game clearly indicates his mindset which is nervous and insecure to say the least !
He was just unable to make sense of the situation and even poor Rameez had to hurriedly wrap up that chat ! Now, taking that kind of mentality into a major tournament isn't a gamble at all,but just stupidity ! There is no hope for this team but then funny things have happened.

One has to understand that it was not the team or players who were responsible for loss to BD but it was wrong decision of Captain who still say that we made mistakes? It was he who committed blunders in last three overs as Pakistan was sure to win had it not captain giving balling to Anwar Ali and Sami.

Pakistan have to find technically good & mentally strong batsmen who can rotate the strike with hard work. Playing 57 dot balls against Bangladesh was absolutely sacrilegious. Basically they played a 10 over match.
Any good T20 team will grab their singles throughout the innings without trying to score only in boundaries. Just look at our Indian team as well as the Bangladeshis.
It is all about changing your mindset regarding hard work in batting and fielding.

It's too close for comfort to replace Afridi as captain. I truly believes that he can still lead (ofcourse, he needs to merit his selection first) but the combination must be changed. Sharjeel (one knock - selection) and Khurram are non sense inclusion in the side. M Sami has been proven as a failed international cricketer so why this mess. Rizwan and Babar Azam are way better T20 players. I feel so frustrated with the lack of stable batsmen with a head that they can use properly. They (PCB) are forcing me to rethink about padding up and playing instead of these useless batsmen. Talent without application will always be a failure so Akmal & A Shahzad needs solid mentoring. At this point, only a miracle can put pakistan in the knock-out stages of the World T20.

I am not an Afridi fan for his batting, he takes no responsibility. But for his bowling, Afridi is one of the best leg spinners playing. He has all the variations. The issue is his batting is having an effect on other players around him, he is the captain. He needs to be responsible, because he doesnt have long left.

looking at recent performances of pak players,,it seems like pcb is corrupt at it roots,,as an indian,i would say bcci is also corrupt but still they dont make any compromise on standard of team india or its players.seeing pakistan perform the heads of greats like imran and wasim wud hv hanged in shame. team mangement needs complete overhaul and people should be made accountable. Afridi, Waqar & entire coaching staff, Hafeez, UAkmal, Shazad, Khurram, Sami must be dropped permanently effective immediately. Azhar Ali must be dropped from ODI squad. Sarfraz should be assigned as a new captain for ODI & T20 teams, Amir as his deputy. Nominate Dean Jones OR Viv Richards as new head & batting coach, Wasim Akram as bowling & fielding coach.

The way we are playing I think its a good a idea not to go to India with mediocre players such as Hafeez,Afridi Khuram,Sharjeel,Shahzad,Anwar ali. The problem with Pcb is they keep on selecting players from past who have been tried and tested before and result is same still FAILED yet again!! until they don't remove corrupt & parchi system I don't think we even have a chance of beating Zimbabwe or Ireland Pcb must take action and get rid of useless and selfish players along with brainless selectors its really disappointing to loose to Bangladesh I remember how we use to hammer Bangladesh and India back in days good old days seems like a history now!

Anger and frustration is obvious & quite natural for Pakistani fans at this stage after the Asia Cup debacle but I as an Indo Canadian have few questions for Pakistani fans who are questioning the decision to retain Shahid Afridi as Captain for WCup T20. Firstly, you need someone strong to replace Afridi who not only plays good cricket but needs to hold the morale of the team & commands respect of rest of the team members, and who can think on his feet on ground to changing scenarios in any T20 game, i.e. strong experience & maturity to react under pressure. Secondly; even if Afridi is failing consistently, the time of less than 14 days is too short for a new & experienced Captain to take over for WCup T20, simply because it could actually affect the morale negatively of the team. The unit needs to gel and this maybe the last chance for Afridi to bring honour back. Rational thinking is needed instead of a knee jerk reaction when you do not have time at your disposal.

I would say fire the entire administration and bring professional cricketers who understand the game of cricket or thugs. Please Waqar and Sheryar use the following simple winning Formula for the T20 World Cup:
Pakistan does not need Khurram Manzoor and Khalid Latif, change your batting order. Start Innings with Hafiz and Sharjil, then Shaoib, Babar Azam, Umer Akmal, Sarfaraz, Afridi, Imad Wasseem/Sami, Wahab, Amir and Irfan.
Inshallah Tallah nation will see the T20 World Cup in the hands of Pakistan Captain.

With what little respect Afridi has, he should retire and take it with him. Yes he is better off opening because the rest of the team know where to stand once he is out, but by batting down you're relying on a possible good performance or out and out defeat, this cannot be done by any circumstance. Let him open and if this miserable form continues, then by all means he has to go, not optional. Pakistan has huge talent around the country, why are they not selected, is it because they're poor or have no rich connections? Pakistan needs a shake up or things will worsen until it's too late.

2. Need give time to the team, keep changing player after every series will never build a team.

Shahryar Khan needs to look for a retirement home in India & give the PCB to Javed Miandad who will then immediately drop Afiridi, Hafeez, Sharjeel, Khurrum & Anwar Ali & bring in Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Haris Sohail, Fawad Alam and Hammad Azam.
Miandad is the right man for this job, like Kardar as PCB head (BCCP back then) made Pakistan team great as he knew what cricket is - meaning shrewd and courageous captaincy & determination to stay on the crease against all odds, and instil never say die spirit... last 10 years of Pakistan ODI and T20 cricket is the most horrible era of our great sporting nation.

How can Afridi be retained as T20 Captain? His recent record, loss to England 0-3, Kiwis 1-2 and in the Asia Cup so far have only beaten UAE and even against them TEAM PAKISTAN struggled. His own performance with the bat has been terrible and is not that good with the ball. Time for Afridi to retire and in his place temporarily Misbah must be persuaded to come out of retirement and lead TEAM PAKISTAN in T20 World Cup in India. Misbah has leadership qualities, he can think on his feet and is still good enough batsman to play T20. His leadership qualities were again recently demonstrated when Islamabad became the first team to win the PSL.
I agree with Javed Miandad there is no place for Afridi in the team and my T20I XI would be:
1. Shahzad, 2. Sarfraz / Hafeez, 3. Malik, 4. Umar, 5. Misbah, 6. Babar (if fit) / Sarfraz, 7. Nawaz, 8. Wahab, 9. Gul, 10. Amir, 11. Junaid.
If Hafeez plays Sarfraz can bat at 6 but I would prefer Babar over Hafeez.

President of Pakistan should fire SherYar Khan, Waqar and Afridi. Khurrum Manzoor and Sherjeel Khan should be mentored and given more chances. Ahemed Shehzad had lots of chances and same is true for Rizwan. Sarfarz could be the best opener with Sherjeel Khan. Not sure why Afridi is afraid of playing Sarfarz as opener. Sarfarz whould be the captian and in place of Afridi we should have another good new all rounder.

Also, prior to the no ball a long discussion was held between Afridi and Sami. You guys recall anything from the past. Why would suddenly Sami delivering 2 no balls in the 18th over and not bowl and a single no ball in prior 2 match.

After the PSL semi-final, Afridi publicly said Sharjeel would be 'rewarded' for his century, implying that he wanted Sharjeel in the Pakistan team.
Sharjeel was not in the original squad, but Afridi forced the selectors to change the squad - so now he should take responsibility for this.

If a commitment was indeed made and Afridi does not relinquish the captaincy of T20 on his own accord, then PCB is obligated to keep him as the captain and it is the honorable thing to do. However, PCB is well within its rights to make changes in the team roster and management and they should. However, I do not have much hope with the current team in the T20 World Cup. Lower your sights and expectation, folks. It will lessen your pain when our team will perform poorly.

PCB should also behave the same way players have played, i.e. change the captain quickly as the players played their game in being hurry and wanted to go home. The captain has failed miserably to understand the situation of the game. Players like Hafeez and Khurram Manzoor should have been dismissed long before. Hafeez is performing like Afridi, one in 20 games and have the courage to say that he will not play with Amir. These players are asking too much without peforming. They know that their place is safe in national side. Similarly, Akmal is playing without any sense and should be shown the door and should never be allowed in the team no matter how he performs domestically.

YOu cannot change the captain just before world cup. This is long term planning and done months ahead. Now good or bad Pakistan has to go with the choices made. Knee jerk reaction at this point will make matters worst. Don't forget I want to see exciting India Pak match in Dharmashala. I want Afridi and his boys relaxed and give their best.

Very well said Chairman make your jobs & your near and dear secure as long as idiots rule the roost.This is what has rotten the entire Nation.Cronies & cronies in each and every department.But Pakistan must not forget about our heroes of yesteryear's who have the sagacity and acumen to deliver.One such hero living in oblivion and highly competent is Mr.Majid Jehangir Khan.If made head of the PCB I am sure you would see a turnaround in Pakistan cricket.The present PCB should be put before the guillotine.

Recent performance of our cricket team was very disappointing ,It is not because we defeated from the India and Bangladesh but the main point is our most players have lost their confidence in front of other team.It seems they have totally forgot how to play in different situation,It is the basic need of every payer he must be bold and face every crucial situation ,if he is not capable ,I strongly suggest he not deserve to represent Green Flag , such players always became cause of disappointment to whole nation.I suggest chairman of our PCB ,It is not a good platform to keep players happy by giving chance again again by expecting for good performance,It is very peculiar we have three captions for one cricket team.If PCB really sincere ,every player must be accountable, Selection criteria of the player will base on present performance nor past .PCB have to take crucial decision to make our cricket team brilliant otherwise the nation never pardon them in any stage....

We have been hearing this 'Pakistan has a lot of talent' for a long time now. True, this country is overflowing with bowling talent. But there is nothing in batting at all. It is surprising that people put the entire blame on coach, captain etc. They don't understand that Pakistan is short of batting resources. They don't have any. Including mediocres like Khurram Manzoor, Sharjeel etc. says it all. The truth is that if Shoaib Malik, Hafeez, Ahmad Shahzad and U Akmal were in India or Australia, they would have perhaps never played an international match.

Good decision. Abrupt and disorganized changes in such a short time won't result any good for Pakistani team. Afridi should be given this last chances with some inevitable changes in the batting line, who knows if he can repeat the 2009 charisma once again..

Shahid Afridi is the heart of Pakistan cricket. He should be leading our team in twenty twenty world cup. what our top and middle order is doing. Please please dont blame only and only Afridi on every defeat. See when new player gets the national cap they must perform in initial matches. can any one give single example of Sohaib Maqsood, Sharjeel Khan, Haris Sohail, Khurram Manzoor, winning the game single handedly for Pakistan. Shahid Afridi has done it in atleast 50 matches. In initial matches good players perform exceptionally well. that is why they are selected.
Produce aggressive capable players for Pakistan or else dont blame Afridi alone. In a T20 match you are playing 17 overs with a stike rate of 5.5 RPO and then ask Afridi to come on and hit every ball well that is injustice. Remember Afridi is very economical with the ball and he is one of the very few good fielders of Pakistan

Looking back at their performance in Asia cup, i just fail to see the reason behind selection of a miserable Khurram Manzoor . Sherjil Khan was selected just over his performance in one match, which i believe was orchastrated around Sherjil Khan, so that he may perform which he did and was immediately placed in the team. Muhammad Hafeez has wonderful mustaches and so he should be retained in the team. Muhammad Sami's selection was on merit but remained unfortunate.

I have no problem with Afradi, he is the most sincere player in the current team. But there should be some changes in the team for upcoming T20 world cup. Please drop Khuram Manzoor, Mohammad Sami, Iftikhar Ahmad, Nawazn at least. Bring in Mukhtar Ahmad, Junaid Khan, Shoaib Maqsood( though a bit lazy, but he is the future of Pakistan Cricket) Rathat Ali or Suhail Khan can also be picked. Unfortunately Babar & Haris Suhail are injured otherwise they should be in.

If Pakistan was a civilised and honest country where merit is prevailing norm, where corruption and nepotism is punishable crime, where discrimination and biases is scorned, where abuse of position and power can lead to sacking, where failures and success are accountable, where law is equatable and rule of law is same for all ... than looking at the performance of PCB and the way PCB is getting run full of nepotism, discrimination, biases, corruption and abuses ... instead of guaranteeing the captaincy of Afridi in T2oI, Shaharyar Khan along with many officials of PCB would have been worrying about saving their own jobs.

So now the Captain of Pakistan National side is living on promises than his own performance (both as a player and Captain). Speaks volume about the current state of team.
Though T20 is very close and generally teams are not shaken up so close to the mega event but I think in this case, revamping Pakistan side while the event is around the corner will actually be beneficial (provided a competent side is selected).
Afridi will not go out, he needs to be kicked out.

I heard many cricketers did not want to play in the presence of Mohammed Amir. That appears to be correct as in Asia cup the real performance came out was from Amir and Sarfaraz. Others performance was not noticeable.

So you will retain him just because you promised him his inclusion till the end of the season.
While you are setting a great example of Eefayay ehad(Keeping your words) you are also demystifying main reason of our failure; injustice!
We can never succeed unless there is accountability and players are added based on merit and performance and not because Khan has promised him the helmsmanship over a cup of coffee.
Shahid Bhai should take full responsibility and declare his retirement at once. We all find ourselves at crossroads in our lives every now and then. It is better to follow the road that helps us preserve our dignity and honor.
