Wahab, Shehzad fined for ‘inappropriate’ exchange of words

SHARJAH: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday fined left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz and opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad with 40 per cent and 30 per cent of their match fees respectively for ‘inappropriate physical contact’.
Riaz was representing Peshawar Zalmi and Shehzad was playing for Quetta Gladiators during the 17th Pakistan Super League (PSL) match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Gladiators, batting first, sent Shehzad and Asad Shafiq as their openers.
Shehzad was looking in a good form and all set for a big innings until Wahab got rid of his middle stump after getting smashed for a mighty six in the fifth over.
The wicket followed an exchange of harsh words between the bowler and the batsman.
TV replays showed Wahab provoking Shehzad by passing on ‘inappropriate’ comments, to which the batsman reacted by colliding into the bowler, crossing a fine line between intense competition and unacceptable behaviour.
The scuffle was, however, neutralised on the spot and was soon overshadowed as Zalmi skipper Shahid Afridi brought himself into the attack and wreaked havoc on Gladiators with bowling figures 4-1-7-5.
Match referee Roshan Mahnama issued a warning and fined both the players for violating clause 2.2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play”.
While the other teams have experienced mixed fortunes, the Shahid Afridi and the Sarfraz Ahmed-led sides have continued to march on to be among the top two PSL sides so far.

to both pcb should give a proper dose with zero tolerance, when i saw it today i was shocked and started to think that these guys play for same national team, and the rage is not something erupted in a over ..i ve serious doubts now that there is no team work with in national team and it is one of the major cause of bad game performance.

Am I the only one who sees this as a good thing? We need this sort of aggression and this does not look like a personal attack but more of a fight in the heat of the moment. This just shows that these players are playing with all their passion and pride on the line.

As wahab has been fined more than ahmed shehzad, its clear who started it. Wahabs outburst was uncalled for and ahmed should not have bumped into him and instead, complained through proper channel. There are many other players who can show anger but contain themselves in their boots. I think wahan should bowl aggressively, but he should zip it. Let the ball do the talking

A very poor show of sportsmanship. I am not a fan of Shehzad. And I somewhat admire Riaz's dedication. I can not see what transpired in the field but I did not like Riaz's facial expression. Last time I saw such a taunting expression was last year during world T20 against Watson. Riaz needs to control and should have been fined a tad higher or should have been immediately benched. Cricket after all has enjoyed the reputation of one of the world's most civilized sport and such behavior is below the norms of a respectable player.

Zalmi has just too much attitude issue and that's coming on because of their captain. People should notice that most of the mess that is wrong with Pakistan national team is accumulated in Zalmi. Afridi, Wahab, Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Junaid Khan, great to see all national under performers, performing out of their skin when it comes to paid performances.

Am so shocked at some calling for heavier fines or bans for both players. Worse things have happened on the cricket field , plus if anything we all should be excited about it as it shows players are playing these games whole heartedly and are giving their 110 percent. If one sees towards the end of the clip, when Shehzad is walking off, his back turned towards us... notice Wahab's lips are NOT moving at this point of time.
We can't see Shehzad's lips as he is turned away from us, but we can see him pointing his bat towards Riaz, as if saying, "How was the six?" or some such taunt. It was then that Riaz reacted.
Once again Shehzad has proved that mere copying of Virat Kohli's aggressive attitude doesn't make one a great run mill.

This the not the first time wahab riaz has done it. He just can not take it when batsman smack six on his bowl. He sort of behaved the same with the new comer Muhammad nawaz but nawaz didn't react. I used to like Wahab riaz but now he is crossing all line, he seriously needs to control his aggression

I shows that this competition is a real competition and both Shahzad and Wahab are generally nice guys off the field. It was the heat of the moment and extra aggression from Wahab especially. This can only be good in cricket field if it remains within the limit. The players just need a slap on the wrist, which has been given already.

It's Shehzad who started the scuffle. Wahab had just expressed his cheers after dismissing Shehzad. Shehzad waived his bat,as a token of aggression. And that's why Quetta Gladiators lost the match. They were emotionally charged and were reading the writing on the wall. The defeat. Better to accept the defeat with open heart if the opposite team outperform you.

Current PSL this is second time you shown your wrong action, first Nawaz hit 4 and you bowled him and jump, talk badly he is growing talent players and did not say anything, shahzad justify to push you, be-careful in future T20 w/cup 2016 Andra Russel and Chris Gyal are in team not to repeat you behavior, I am expecting they will have bat in their hand save your head and not to repeat child behavior.

It was Riaz who started this having seen the clip, he literally walked up to Shehzad like he was going to punch him and mouthing all sorts of swear words. Absolutely disgusting on his part. Ahmed Shehzad only replied with how was the six and did nothing more.

@La Hasil Exactly what I was thinking, a couple of bouncers in Australia and suddenly everyones turned him into the best thing since sliced bread. He can barely deliver two balls on the same spot. Shehzads six was a lovely sight, to an inswinging (fluke delivery) as well.

I think the Wahab-Watson clash from last year has gone to Wahab's head. He has been seen earlier sledging Shakib in the PSL. Shahzad isn't that calm headed either. Personally both should have been suspended for a game or two.

Wahab seems a great prospect however there are clear signs that he has a self destruct button. There will be batters out there looking at developments who will also be aware of that button. Hope Wahab can keep a lid on things and we see some clean agressive cricket.

Think Wahab needs a few behavior management sessions, he is way too aggressive. He has to realise that it is the batsmen's God given right to punish him as much as possible. He has no grounds for any grievance against the batsmen. And to get physical is beyond comprehension. He deserved a few match bans. The match officials have failed the game.

The management Coach should call both of them in the field and ask Wahhab to deliver 4 overs like he did to shane Watson to Shahzad and let shahzad defend those 4 overs.
