ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali, speaking on the floor of the National Assembly (NA), on Thursday said the interior ministry had prepared a performance report on Sindh Rangers for the past two-and-a-half years.

The report has not been made public yet by the interior ministry.

The minister said his ministry had played a crucial part in coordinating efforts between the various civil security agencies and the military – an effort that had led to a significant drop in terror activities across the country.

"Intelligence agencies played a vital role in nipping terrorists’ plots in the bud. The terrorists have been marginalised, but the war is not over yet," said the interior minister.

The interior minister added that some militants have fled across the border, and the security apparatus of the country will maintain their momentum in combating the scourge of terrorism.

During the address to the assembly, Nisar also shed light on the lack of human resource facing the interior ministry.

Moving onto another subject, Nisar said that the ministry did not have computerised records before, a situation that he has rectified since assuming charge of the ministry of interior.

"There were no records before for arms licenses or visas, and some records for arms licenses were burnt in a fire, about which I have serious reservations," explained Nisar.

He added that records for visas and arms licenses are now computerised, and will assist the ministry in keeping a check on the issuance of such documents.

"We have a severe issue of human resource with in the ministry. If we fire an official, for corruption or other offenses, at times we do not have a replacement," stated Nisar.

He added that the civil bureaucracy, which is the backbone of the country, has faced a severe human resource shortage in the last few years.

Elaborating on the actions taken against corruption by his ministry, the minister said that he has taken strict action against corrupt officials which come under the ministry.

He added that several officials from various departments have been separated from their departments or were arrested due to their corrupt practices.

Giving an example, he added that from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), 64 officials were fired for being corrupt; the department was ridden with corruption.

"Corruption flourished in the FIA due to low salaries, at times FIA officials were being paid less than police officials at the same grade. We can not eliminate corruption completely, but we can minimise it," said the interior minister.
