Imran Khan, Modi hail improvement in Indo-Pak ties

NEW DELHI: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi Friday evening, where he invited Modi to visit Pakistan, the India Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said on Twitter.

Swarup said that the two leaders welcomed the recent developments in bilateral ties between India and Pakistan, and hoped that these would lead to closer cooperation.

But earlier today, PTI Central Information Secretary Shireen Mazari had said on Twitter that party chief Imran Khan is in India on the invitation of India Today and 'a meeting may also take place with Indian PM on latter's invitation.'

In a statement, advisor Naeem ul Haque had said the Indian premier and Pakistani politician will discuss "matters of mutual interest".

Later, Mazari confirmed that Imran Khan will be meeting Indian PM before speaking at the India Today conference.

The PTI chairman left for New Delhi earlier today on a two-day visit to attend a conference on Indo-Pak relations. The event is being hosted by India Today, according to a tweet by the PTI's official account.

A PTI official told Dawn.com Khan is accompanied by party leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Naeemul Haq.

Imran calls for resuming cricket ties

Later in the evening, Imran Khan appeared in an India Today show alongside former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev.

Speaking to the audience, Imran Khan said during his meeting with the Indian PM, he also urged for resumption of cricket ties with Pakistan.

"I had supported South Africa’s boycott by the cricketing world during the apartheid era because it was about human rights violation," said the PTI chief.

When asked what Modi's response was on resuming cricket ties, Imran said: “He (Modi) only smiled and I cannot figure out if it was a yes or no.”

Imran was of the view that any move that can improve bilateral relations between Pakistan and India, such as a cricket series, should be adopted.

“People to people contacts increase and you get mutual heroes, like Sachin Tendulkar is a hero in Pakistan," Imran Khan said.

The meeting between Imran and Modi comes days after Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Islamabad and held meetings with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and PM's Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

The two sides greed to reinitiate the comprehensive dialogue process to discuss all outstanding issues including terrorism and Kashmir.

They noted the successful talks on terrorism and security related issues in Bangkok by the two National Security Advisers and decided that the security advisers will continue to address all issues connected to terrorism.

Pakistan assured the Indian side that the government is taking steps being to expedite the early conclusion of the Mumbai trials.

@Sheraz... let me refresh your mind. This man was able to gain 80 lakh votes in GE 2013. His party is the secons biggest party of Pakistan with regards to votes. He has the second highest mandate in Pakistan and in control of a whole province. So being the second most powerful man of Pakistan, he has every right to meet Modi. And its not that he is using tax money to go there.

CM shahbaz visits turkey every week. Bibi Maryam gets launched into politics at the White House and holds one to one meetings with the FM of India, yet she is not representative of the people. The only qualification she has......PM's daughter. What do you say to that?

imran khan is a opposition leader in pakistan.in every democratic countries,meeting opposition leaders if they are in thier country by the head of the govt of that countries is a protocol and a diplomatic necessity which has to be followed. even if head of other countries visit any country they will make a point to meet opposition leaders along with the current govt head of that country.bcoz you never when that govt will overthrown in next elections and the very same guy may hold the coveted post as head of the govt.this is a common procedure.

I may have differences with my PM, but at the end of the day he is the PM of Pakistan and we as Pakistanis need to respect outside our home and on official levels. Someone may have more steel and creditability does not mean we disregard the office bearer as we are insulting ourselves at national and international levels. Dear Pakistani brothers first of all I want to clarify that Imran Khan is not participating in any state sponsored conference on Indo-Pak relations.He is participating in a programm named as 'Agenda Aaj Tak' organised by a leading private media group India Today.In this programme famous personalities from diverse fields viz. Politics,Cinema,sports etc. are invited and asked to give their precious views about any topic related to their area.As far as I know Imran's views will be asked on issues like Indo-Pak cricket series,Functioning of PCB and may be lighter questions like his views on India-Pakistan's talk resumption .GoI has nothing to do with this event.Since IK is a powerful leader in Pakistan so on his arrival Prime Minister Modi may invite him for a meeting.

Reading comments from fellow Pakistani people I realise that Pakistan is far away from reading democratic norms. In democracy opposition leader is also considered to be shadow PM and other country's leader also talk with them to find out their view. Whenever any leader from other country visit India, they also meet with Sonia Gandhi being opposition leader. So Imran meets with Indian PM is nothing new in Indian democracy may be new to Pakistani democracy.

He has large support in Pakistan. Hurriyat leaders are self appointed leaders who have never participated in any election. Pakistan is free to talk to elected leaders from Kashmir.

Moreover, his party lost LG elections in Karachi but are victorious KPK and came 2nd behind PML-N in Islamabad and parts of Punjab. The bottom line is that the Indian government wants PCB to incur financial losses and it will do anything to make sure that it happens. @NotSurprised Maybe you are not aware that the BJP leader L K Advani visited Pakistan in 2005 and at that time he held no official position in the Indian Government but he was given full honors and protocol including a Pakistan Navy guard of honor and he met with Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz and other politicians as well. A lesser known Indian politician, Harkishen Singh Surjeet, the CMP (Communist Party Marxist) leader had also visited Pakistan including Karachi. So there is no need to get so excited.

I believe third person should get a chance. He might be broker a peace betweeen us two parties nwl and Pakistan. First, prove himself in kp . I hate jamaat but hopefully he gets over them.Pakistan needs it.
