Sepco controversy

SUKKUR: An urgent meeting of Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) board of directors has been convened on Nov 27 by its finance manager in contravention with the prescribed rules and regulations, it is learnt.

With some directors taking the meeting illegal, sources within the Sepco management say the main item on the agenda is extension for the power utility chief executive officer Muzaffar Ali Abbasi, who is to retire on Dec 12.

“It’s the company secretary and not the finance manager who can issue a notice for the meeting; secondly, the notice is required to have been issued at least seven days before the meeting,” argued a senior Sepco executive referring to the relevant rules. The sources said that the notice was issued by finance manager Imdad Mirani after Sepco secretary Tariq Majeed on Monday turned down the management’s request for calling out the meeting within three-four days and include the item of extension in the CEO’s service on the agenda.
