THIS is apropos letters published in support of qingqis in Karachi. I disagree with the writers. The Sindh High Court has rightly banned such a hazardous mode of transportation.
Qingqis are a combination of carriages perched on motorcycles having the rear wheel removed, primarily designed for the rural areas. Bringing them on cities’ busy roads jampacked with heavy traffic caused accidents and fatalities that could have been avoided.
Although the qingqis provided cheaper transport, the amalgamation of their unstable designs and untrained drivers resulted in a distressful experience for the other vehicle drivers. Since the ban on qingqis, Karachiites have been experiencing a smoother flow of traffic.
To solve the issues of public transportation, I request the authorities to seek safer and economical alternatives instead of reviving qingqis.
