UNAUTHORISED expansion is one of the many issues the bustling city of Karachi has been facing for a long time. The rapidly rising trend of multi-storeyed private school buildings in suburban areas is irksome to those who chose to live in the suburbs as a way to stay clear of the urban tumult.

The enticement of suburban life lies within its composure, free from constant barrage of car horns, bustling crowds and the rasping sound of school bells. However, unapproved construction and expansion of schools disrupt the peace, causing a myriad of problems for area residents. During rush hours, the influx of school-related traffic aggravates traffic and parking woes. The aftermath of school hours, marked by littered wrappers across the residential streets, further adds to the residents’ dismay.

The issue, say, is not that of a localised inconvenience alone. It is a symptom of Karachi’s uncontrollable expansion coupled with lack of planning. It is imperative that the authorities formulate an extensive roadmap, allocating spaces to educational institutions, hospitals and commercial establishments separate from peaceful residential zones.

It is high time the relevant officials addressed the matter promptly, ensuring that the residential spaces are free from any disruption caused by inappropriate infrastructure placements across the city.
