KARACHI: The city traffic police on Friday asked the Sindh High Court to ban the plying of six- and nine-seat CNG rickshaws on roads because these vehicles do not fulfil the specification of the motor cab rickshaw under the motor vehicle and traffic laws.

The plea was made in the reply of the traffic police to a constitutional petition of the All Karachi CNG Rickshaw Owners’ Association.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah put off the hearing of the petition to a date to be later announced by the court office.

The court had earlier asked the provincial transport secretary, the city traffic police chief and others to file their respective comments in reply to a constitutional petition filed against the action being taken against CNG rickshaws.

The association submitted in the petition that the traffic police and the city administration were taking action against the CNG rickshaws in the garb of action ordered by the SHC against Qingqis (motorbike-rickshaws).
