ISLAMABAD: British boxer Amir Khan on Friday praised the love for boxing among Pakistan's youth and vowed to extend his full support for development of the sport in the country during an event at the Islamabad Sports Complex.

“The reason I want to get involved in sport and boxing for Pakistan is because I believe there is so much talent in the country that needs to be projected. Pakistan is a great country,” Khan said.

“I also believe that we can make many champions from Pakistan and to do this we announce the foundation of an academy here,” the British boxer of Pakistani origin revealed.

Amir said it was a proud moment for him to be in Pakistan and show his support to young boxers.

“I am very proud to be here in Pakistan. I want to support the young people in Pakistan. I want to motivate them.”

Talking to young boxers, trainers and officials of the Ministry of Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) at the complex, Amir narrated how his father had supported his passion for the sport at a very young age.

“Boxing has changed my life. I started boxing at the age of eight. My dad took me to a gym.

“I had a chance, I had an opportunity and that's what we want to give to the younger ones of Pakistan so that they can go to gyms, get training and coaching,” he said.

Amir was optimistic about the future of boxing in Pakistan after seeing the enthusiasm for the sport among the youth.

“I really believe Pakistan could be one of the top nations in boxing. We have the talent, we have everything that we need and I am here to show my support.”
