LAHORE: Students and civil society gathered at Liberty Roundabout on Monday to protest at child abuse in Pakistan. In the light of a recent news from Kasur involving a racket of child abusers, the protest was called by the Democratic Students Alliance. The participants carrying placards and banners chanted slogans against those involved in the case.

They said the crime was made more horrific by the fact that an MPA had pressured parents to withdraw their allegations against the suspects. Furthermore, one of the main suspects was released from police custody after the payment of a Rs5 million bribe reportedly. They said they took to streets not just because of the disgusting way the abuse of around 300 children has been handled by authorities but also because of the general treatment of abuse victims in our communities.

The participants also issued a joint declaration stating that had the state took such incident in the past it would have averted a mega scandal of abusing many children today. — Staff Reporter
