Energy, education priorities in Pak-US economic ties, says Ruppersberger

ISLAMABAD: Senior member of the United States House Appropriations Committee Dutch Ruppersberger identified education and energy as Congress priorities in expansion of economic cooperation in Pakistan.

The US Representative in a Capitol Hill meeting with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs (SAPM) Tariq Fatemi on Tuesday discussed bilateral relations and economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.

Fatemi briefed the US Representative on the Pakistani government’s plans for domestic economic growth and stimulating economic connectivity in order to achieve long-term regional prosperity.

He touched upon measures including fiscal stability, revenue collection, and expanding trade and regional outreach.

Both sides also discussed the potential of bilateral trade, enhancing economic linkages and stimulating people-to-people contacts.

Representative Dutch Ruppersberger fondly recalled many of his past visits to Pakistan and specially appreciated Pakistan’s strong measures to counter militancy and terrorism.

Ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani and the Congressional Staff of the State and Defence Appropriations Committees also attended the meeting.

Rather than having arrangements with USA, Pakistan should try to get its best students educated in India where nothing but MERIT works. We, in Pakistan, have forgotten what merit is. My only wish for our children to be allowed to get addmissions in IITs and IIMs, which are one of the best educational institutions in the world, right next door.

USA SHOULD FOCUS ON ELECTRIC. EDUCATION. DAM...IN PAK. THEN PEOPLE OF PAK TURN INTO POSITIVE TOWARDS. POLITICIAN GET BENEFIT BUT PEOPLE DON'T GET. SO USA BECOME NEGATIVE TOWARDS PAK PEOPLE. IF USA focus on people then usa become positive impression to people

@Khalid Dear do you live in fool's paradise? remember that Pakistani student was beaten in his bed , in a dorm room in India, and was transported in semi coma condition back. MIT, Berkeley, UCLA, Oxford, Sorbonne - Australian Univ. you compare with India! If you think India so advanced, why millions eager to go West or millions struggle to stay in West - perhaps you have no Notion.

@Khalid why not Pakistan introduces like IIT, and IIMS style universities in each of the major cities of Pakistan and the admission to these universities be completely on merit base only! Just like our Armed forces recruitment take place, which undoubtedly take the best of the best minds irrespective of who he/she is. Make staff appointment totally transparent, open and merit based in these institutions. Open these positions to anyone who qualify for it, be it Indian professors or Bangladeshi professor or Nepali professor or a Pakistani professor. Get best of the best mind from Asia for staff. Lets plan to have them in next 5-10 years?

Without internal growth and good governance all these handouts from the US and the West, goes to waste and in the foreign bank accounts of the corrupt Pakistani leaders. The poor 190-million are left with more debt in the end. No country grows itself out of poverty by begging and borrowing. China, Korea and now India have grown from inside out without much handouts. Pakistan needs to stop being a beggar to the world.

US is right on spot and we want universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University,Stanford University,California Institute of Technology (Caltech),Princeton University and Yale University Asian chapters in Pakistan. If we bring these universities in Pakistan it will be a big blow for the terrorist and it will boost our education. Best of luck and i am supporting you US in this cause

NS can seek PM modi help to built IITs for Pakistan in SAARC summit. It is not matter of shame to seek help in education. In past history all Pakistani known India seek help to built IITs . After then India independently build 9 IITs more , 30 NITs, IIMs with AIIMS like institutions. Pakistan can follow same suit. India can invest a lot in Pakistan in infrastructure, education, banking . to create there good image among the pak youth .
