KHAR: Suspected militants blew up a government boys primary school in Nawagai tehsil bordering Afghanistan on Sunday, officials and local people told Dawn.

They said the incident took place in Karai Kanagra area, some 34 kilometers from northwest of Khar.

According to local people, a group of unidentified miscreants entered the building of the school and planted a number of explosive devices inside it.

They said the explosives went off with a bang, razing the building to the ground, but fortunately no one was hurt as the building was empty when the blast struck.

The volunteers of village defence committee reached the spot soon after the explosion and cordoned off the area, but miscreants managed to escape.

A local administration official said the school building was partially destroyed in the explosion.

Talking to Dawn, the official said the administration had launched an investigation into the incident. He said search operation was also launched to arrest the miscreants responsible for the incident.

According to the local people some residents were also arrested by the local administration under the collective territorial responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).
