NEW YORK: A hijab-wearing Muslim of Palestinian descent has been named the best-dressed girl at a school in New Jersey state, according to a website.
Abrar Shahin, a student of Clifton High School, sports a black skirt and skinny jeans, ankle-high boots and a cropped white blazer in her yearbook photo.
Her make-up is just about perfect, capped with plum-toned lip stick, the NorthJersey.com said.
The website quoted Abrar Shahin as saying that “there are always cheerleaders who win and popular girls.
So I was very surprised it was me, being a hijabi”.
With her trendy style, Shahin, who holds a clothing-store job, has been shattering stereotypes about Muslims, but at the same time observing her religious traditions.
The “best dressed” vote also shows how acceptance has grown at one of the largest and most diverse high schools in the state.
The class of 2015, which graduated on Friday, includes many immigrants and first-generation students whose families hail from across the globe.
Out of the nearly 3,300 students at the Clifton High School, there are 52 per cent Hispanics, 35 per cent whites, eight per cent Asians and five per cent blacks.

If a Muslim had invented something or received a science award, that would be news worthy. But this? We need to shed this complex of trying to show to ourselves and the world how one can be modern and good looking and yet be a practicing Muslim.

This is basically an acceptance of the fact that hijab or being a muslim has nothing to do with whats going on in this world. We need to appreciate the openness and fairness of Americans for accomodating all cultures and religions and recognizing the good among them.

No offense. I live in US. Salute to those who wear out of modesty and so on. Salute to those who choose not to but still has modest appeal. But i am not sure modesty has hijab and skinny jeans together.

Who has adjudged her as best dressed student? The decision making bench of a US school in New York. There is a flip side which very few of us will even like to talk about- not everything is bad about USA. Deep down inside us we know justice prevails in the west to an extent which makes our systems look naive or even non existent.

Modesty has nothing to do with skinny jeans, please grow out of these age old non-sensical notions. Jeans is probably the safest clothes out there if you compare it with loose pyjamas or trousers.

Muslim presence is less than 1% in the US. Unless it hits 5 0r 10 % most Muslim stories involving empowerment will be positive. Every decent human rejoices diversity untill it becomes unsustainable.

Best or worst dressed is not about being Muslim or winning scholarship. We should ask ourselves if we would be willing to give the same recognition if the winner were a Shia, Hazare, Hindu or Christian? I think this a moment to pause and think what make people and nations great and we have much to learn about tolerance

I see most of the people are appreciating the acceptance of diversity (religion+culture) in US... i do the same. But being Muslims are we that tolerant towards our own brothers, sisters n children? No! If we were, we would never abuse/kill other Muslims just because they have different belives. Funny enough... we appreciate non-Muslims for accepting and tolerating us but we can't tolerate our own people... maybe we should learn this trait from these people to stop murdering of our own innocent people.

Nazis made Jews wear a star on their clothes to be able to identify them for concentration camps. Muslims in the West have done a good job themselves with hijabs and niqabs so that when time comes they will be easily identified.

Don't know how she dresses with just a face shot, but it's about time we start appreciating our own culture. We don't need to force our values and culture on anyone, just preserve it in ourselves and our loved ones. I find that a woman who maintains her dignity and modesty is a whole lot more attractive than one who wants to flaunt her beauty.
