LAKKI MARWAT: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Lakki Marwat chapter, has asked the federal government to approve a comprehensive development package for the district to end its backwardness.

The demand was made at a meeting held here on Tuesday with party’s district general secretary Sher Ali Khan in the chair. Others participants included senior vice-president Habibullah Khan and election candidates, including Tareefullah Khan, Taj Ali Khan, Imranullah Khan and Abdul Jalil.

On this occasion, they asked the leadership to pay heed to strengthening of PML-N in the district and resolving problems being faced by its workers.

“The district lags behind in all fields and the federal government should give attention to its development,” said Mr Habibullah.

He demanded of the party’s provincial and central leadership to provide financial resources to run the party’s office in the district. Another party activist, Sher Ali, sought provision of funds for establishment of a university and cadet college in the district.

He also demanded of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to approve setting up of a passport office in the district.

Mr Imranullah asked the federal government to provide funds for natural gas supply to the urban and rural localities.

He said that the government should also allocate funds for water supply schemes so as to overcome the drinking water shortage in the district. “The development package will help strengthen the party in the district,” he added.

LOW TURNOUT: Women were barred from casting vote and as such the turnout of female voters remained low in 10 polling areas in the May 30 local government elections, claimed a representative of Frontier Rural Development Programme (FRDP) on Tuesday.

He said that under its citizen voice project in Lakki Marwat the FRDP tried to create awareness of the importance of local government system.

He claimed that the organisation also worked for increasing women’s participation in the election process.

He said the polling areas with low or no turnout of female voters had been reported to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

He said that FRDP volunteers organised community meetings, while contesting candidate were imparted training on the concept of local governance.

He claimed that they managed to spread messages through FM radio in the district to highlight importance of LG elections.
