DSP gunned down in Karachi

KARACHI: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Majeed Abbasi was killed Tuesday when unknown assailants opened fire on a police mobile in Karachi's Shah Latif Town area.

The DSP was on his way to duty when he was targeted in Shah Latif Town's Zafar Town area. The slain police official was posted as SP of Site town.

He was critically injured and was being shifted to Jinnah Hospital but succumbed to his wounds on the way, Dr Seemin Jamali, head of emergency at JPMC, told Dawn.

Station House Officer (SHO) Shah Latif Town also said DSP Majeed Abbasi was killed when four unidentified assailants targeted his police mobile near Masjid Ahl Hadees.

Police, Rangers and officers in the Sindh capital have been frequently targeted in Karachi in the fight against militancy, target killings and sectarian violence. Grenades have been lobbed at police stations and vehicles.

Earlier last month, deputy superintendent of police Abdul Fatah Sangri along with his security guard and driver was shot dead in a gun attack.

On May 9, a DSP was gunned down in Shah Faisal area of the metropolis.

Karachi has been a cauldron of ethnic and political tension for decades, where political parties have militant wings, gangs make money through drug-trafficking, land grabbing and other forms of crime, and sectarian violence.

Targeted operations led by Rangers’ forces with the support of police are ongoing in the city under a directive issued by the federal government against criminals already identified by federal, military and civilian agencies.

PM condemns DSP murder

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the murder of DSP Majeedi Abbasi in Karachi.

Seeking a report into the incident, he expressed concern over the number of police officials targeted in Karachi in the last few weeks, and directed the authorities to take tangible steps to improve the law and order situation in the metropolitan city, and apprehend criminals at the earliest.

Our security responsibls are very efficient, they find every culprit , group ,target killer etc etc very ! Soooon after the incident. Carry on crushing these criminals.

the assail of the DSP is irretrievable. incursions on police and rangers by the miscreants is at treble in Karachi and are dismayed ,these exacerbated and perennial / eternal incursions laid down in the city are much formidable and required to be their debilitation / eradication by strategic operations Indefatigably against these heinous and ignominies.

Murder of police is becoming common news. Government at the top level and Army who is claiming to bring peace and order back to city has to take serious note. Bring the power and security to law enforcement agencies, then only the citizens will feel safe.

This my friends is a war, sad that we have lost a no doubt brave DSP who was facing the criminals and was targeted just because he was targeting them. He may not be the last senior policeman to die in the cause, but in the long run we will win. We must not stop the operation, it must continue so that the brave shaheed died for a better tomorrow for our children.

The target killing of Police has completely shattered the morale of the force. If immediate steps are not taken, it is going to be a disaster from security and policing point of view for the country. On daily basis policemen are mercilessly being murdered by terrorist, extortionists, criminals, jihadis and everyone who is not pleased with them. Government should immediately provide the same facilities to Police force as is being given to Army. After all the importance of policing has grown multifolds today.

Sad, a police officer had to succumb to violence. When politicians say, '... we strongly condemn it...', what is it worth? It is a customary lip service after the mishap. Please take preemptive action, public needs protection. Robotic condemnation won't help.

@Tariq Sad happening, no doubt. But the saddest part is that such incidents have come to be taken as no more than a routine happening. Rhetorical statements by the government after every such brutality is committed only add to the pain felt by the silent majority at having totally inept rulers presiding over its destiny.

@Saad ..... It is time for the PM and the army commander to make some tough decisions. At the moment their focus is not on Karachi. The Sindh government leaders have been ineffective and afraid to deal with gangsters who could have them killed just as easily.

@Azmeen ..... Terrorists didn't kill him. He was killed by a criminal gang. It is disgraceful for a country to allow their police to be murdered in the streets. Sooner or later martial law will be the only remedy. Guns need to be outlawed permanently in Karachi and confiscated by the army going house to house. Possession of explosives, grenades and heavy weapons - ten years in prison by military tribunal.

@Imran .. Let me correct you ... the importance of 'Local police' has grown multi fold.... this is the only solution , a tried and tested formula all over the world. Stop bringing imported LEA to control security ... It doesn't work in any part of the world and won't work in karachi .... Hold LB elections and give the control of the city to its residents.

He was my relative. May his soul rest in peace. An amazing person, full of life. Brave and honest. The government......., well there isn't much we expect of them. These parcel of rouges aren't at all serious about combating terrorism. There policy is deeply flawed. But what's the point in harping about various issues, surely our "senior tajziyekar" have already covered them. Sadly though, no one's touching the hornet's nest, the dens where terrorism is bred and incubated, where children are indoctrinated in various hardline doctrines. And there are approximately 20,000 such places. We know what these are called. Also, the state itself sanctions certain groups that are involved in religious and sectarian terrorism. Oh I forgot, I am only writing to zombies. A nation that has lost more than 60,000 of its folks, has no control over its own cities and provinces, is hell bent upon taking back kashmir and bangladesh... But then again, why am I crying out loud. Over to our senior tajziyekar.

@ali ahmed It is quite frustrating to note that no further information is made available to the media about the punishment meted out to those arrested as terrorists or target killers. Maybe, the cases are not fit to stand in court, or the prosecution does not make effort to bring the cases to court after proper homework to obtain a guilty verdict.

Ahh! For God Sake, I wish if he had been taken to a closest hospital. Not only him but hundreds and thousands of deceased, who i am sure died of not only being injured/shot but also for not being treated in a closest medical facility. I hope some one raise this point on a proper forum. I don't understand the logic behind transporting an injured person to JPMC from any part of this massive city. Concern authorities, Please use some common sense and save lives!

Pakistan Military should take full charge of Sind Province. Flood of ammunition , guns, grenades and other military style weapons are all over in Sind Province and Police can not control because of political affiliations with the parties is also a reason, they have been targeted. The other solution is to provide heavy machine guns to the Police and free hand to arrest anyone they suspect. All gun permits in Sind must be revoked immediately for the time being until situation changes.
