THIS is apropos Sidra Bari’s letter ‘Factory pollution’ (May 18). The writer has raised a genuine point that needs immediate attention of the authorities concerned.

She has complained about the existence of a textile factory in the residential area (Sohar Colony) in Karachi which is creating pollution and affecting the health of the residents of the area. One wonders how the owner of the factory could manage an NOC for establishing a factory in the residential area.

A long time ago I happened to see a juice manufacturing factory in another residential locality of Karachi. It was a nuisance for the residents of that area. The noise of the generator would virtually disturb the adjoining households.

The trucks making their way to the factory through narrow lanes was another story. I am sure it would have been impossible for the residents of that locality to keep their mental balance.

All these problems are due to problem number one: rampant corruption. You grease the palm of the person who matters and the job is got done. I was horrified to listen to a discussion on a TV channel that pertained to issuance of a driving licence to a blind person. If corruption is controlled, then all good things would follow and a new Pakistan would automatically emerge.
