GUJRAT: The maiden meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held at the district government complex on Wednesday.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Liaqat Ali Chattha said at the meeting the authority had commenced its working in Gujrat to cope with disasters and emergencies for which a mock exercise by government departments would be held at the University of Gujrat on Friday (tomorrow).

The meeting was attended by officials of government departments and non-government organisations.

The authority will carry out rescue operations during natural calamities and terror incidents.

POLLS: Gujranwala Election Commissioner Masroor Bajjar, also returning officer for NA-108 by-election, met candidates to get their assurance to implement the code of conduct by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

District government and police officials also attended the meeting where candidates assured the government and the ECP of their cooperation to follow the code.

The seat fell vacant after the disqualification of Ejaz Chaudhry.

By-poll will be held on June 8.

Also, former Malakwal tehsil nazim Ghulan Husain Bosal withdrew his candidature from the poll at a press conference in Mandi Bahauddin. He announced his support for PML-N nominee Mumtaz Tarrar.

Mr Bosal is brother of PML-N MPA Akhtar Husain Bosal and cousin of PML-N MNA Nasir Iqbal Bosal.
