MINGORA: Unidentified assailants shot dead a policeman at Taj Chowk here on Tuesday morning.

Mingora police said Ihsanullah was on duty at busy Taj Chowk in Mingora city when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him leaving him critically injured.

A pedestrian identified as Abdul Wadood also received injuries in the incident. Both of them were taken to Saidu Teaching Hospital, but Ihsanullah succumbed to injuries on the way.

DPO Salim Marwat said that search for arrest of the killers was underway.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Malakand Division, Kifayatullah Khan has asked all the stakeholders to ensure free and fair local government polls in the division.

Speaking at a meeting on Tuesday participated by police and army officials and deputy commissioners of all the district, he said conduct of free and fair LG polls was the top priority of the administration.

“Security in all the districts should be beefed up and coordination among the law enforcement agencies maintained to tackle any unpleasant situation,” he said, adding that maintaining a peaceful environment on the polling day was indispensable.

He warned the governmental officials to refrain from leave on the polling day. The health department should stay alert for meeting any emergency on the polling day, he said.
