KARACHI: Former Sindh home minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, who was already facing multiple cases on charges of creating violence in Badin, was booked in another case by Karachi police on Monday.

Aram Bagh police have registered FIR 191/2015 against Zulfiqar Mirza under sections 146 (rioting), 147 (punishment for rioting), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

An official at the said police station told Dawn that the case had been registered during the weekend on the complaint of SHO Alam Dahiri.

The officer appeared reluctant to share contents of the complaint filed by the SHO. But a source told Dawn that the case was related to events surrounding the recent appearance of Zulfiqar Mirza before a court in the metropolis.

Mirza was accused of forcibly climbing on an armoured personnel carrier of police, from where he delivered his speech and allegedly threatened police officers.

Meanwhile, the former lawmaker in his statement to media claimed that recently Sindh High Court had issued directions to the police not to lodge any case against him without approval of the court.

Mirza said by lodging another case against him, the police was in contempt of the court and announced he would approach the court to initiate proceedings against the police.

“By lodging consecutive cases against me, the Sindh government has gone berserk,” said the former home minister.

Mirza had been charged with damaging a police station, forcibly closing down traders’ shops and looting Rs3 million and Rs3.7 million, respectively, from two shops during protests in Badin.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday had approved Mirza's bail in three cases.

Mirza's counsel had argued in court that all cases against his client had been registered on a political basis and therefore a pre-arrest bail should be approved.

After hearing the arguments, the court approved Dr Mirza's interim pre-arrest bail till May 19 against a sum of Rs100,000.
