GUJRANWALA: A trader of fruit and vegetable market was gunned down while three others were injured by highwaymen near the Punjab University sub-campus here on Friday.

Police said some traders of Cantonment and adjacent areas were on their way to the fruit and vegetable market by a pick-up. When they reached near Lohianwala bypass, two men signalled their vehicle and boarded it in the guise of traders.

They tried to snatch cash and mobile phones from all traders and opened fire when they faced resistance. Shahbaz Ahmad, 42, and a father of five, died on the spot.

Driver Ghulam Mustafa, Hanif Muhammad and Idrees were admitted to local DHQ Hospital in a critical condition.

Civil Lines police superintendent Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqi reached the spot and assured traders that the accused would be arrested soon. Meanwhile, Saddar SP Syed Karar Husain said a robber who was killed in an encounter with police in Kamoki was identified as Khadim alias Khado who was a gangster of Auti group.
