KARACHI, Sept 12: Sindh Finance Minister and parliamentary party leader of the MQM Sardar Ahmad on Friday asked a delegation of women activists to appraise him of the shortcomings of the Hudood Ordinance.

He was talking to delegation of the Joint Action Committee for People’s Rights, which called on him at his office to discuss the issue.

The women activists asked him to move a resolution calling for the repeal of the ordinances. The team will meet him in his office on Saturday.

Earlier, the team met Sindh Women Development Minister Dr Saeeda Malik, who assured them that she would support the resolution whenever it was moved in the assembly, regardless of the fact who had moved it.

She said that she was aware of the fact the number of women prisoners had multiplied many-fold since Hudood Ordinances were promulgated in the 1980s.

The team leader, Anis Haroon of the Aurat Foundation, told Dawn that the delegation has been lobbying for gaining support for its stand on the Hudood Ordinance.

A delegation of women activists had also met Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali in this regard, she said.

The JACPR team comprised Shima Kirmani (Tehrik-i-Niswan), Nuzhat Kidwai (WAF), Aisha Mir and Nighat Tofique (Shirkatgah), Nadia Haroon (HRCP), Mahar Taj, Shirin Khokhar, Shahid Faiz and Malka Khan (Aurat Foundation).
