Pakistani band denied permission for Mumbai show

NEW DELHI: Popular band Sachal Jazz Ensemble had to call off its performance in Mumbai on Monday after the city police withheld permission for seven Pakistani artistes in the group to perform, local newspapers said on Tuesday.
They said the Lahore-based band consists of three British citizens and seven Pakistanis. The last-minute cancellation left a 1,000-strong crowd that had gathered to hear the internationally renowned band deeply disappointed.

The band had tweeted on Sunday night that it was going to perform “jazz and ragas” at the NCPA. The performance was to begin at 7pm; the show was cancelled at 7.40 pm after the permissions failed to come through.
The three UK citizens in the band were reportedly given approval by the police to perform in the city, but the permissions to the Pakistanis were held up, the papers said.
The organisers, who were trying the whole day to get the requisite permissions, seemed surprised by the last-minute denial.
They refused to speak about the issue, only saying that they would send a formal email explaining the cancellation.

Our government gives out visas like candy to average Indians, yet Indians can't honor talented artists from Pakistan whom they insult with this type of underhanded mistreatment. This is Modi's India now, and this is how Modi and his BJP treat it's Pakistani visitors who are victimized by extremist zealots.

For all who are challenging India's democracy and secularism, look at how many Indians perform in your society on a given day and how many Pakistanis are and want to be in India.
It is the right of a sovereign nation to decide who could and who cannot perform in it's territorial reach.
Ergo, "Mehman-nawazi" is the favour a host grants to the "Mehman", it is not the right of a Mehman to demand it!
Moreover, it's the goof-up of the organisers. They should have been aware of the Mumbaikar's sentiments towards "group" of young Pakistani men.

Aman kee asha is just a drama whose sincere audience are only in Pakistan. Indian side either doesn't care or has no influence compared to the right wing Hindu nationalists like BJP, Shiv Sena and Hindutva. Just yesterday Dawn published a story about Indian delegation who came to Lahore via Wahga and was greeted like celebrity in Pakistan. In response, Mumbai cancels the Pakistani band show.

Sir, this is a clear case of mismanagement on the part of organisers. This report suggests that the permission was not cancelled but not allowed in first instance. How organisers can commit without permission from authorities. The organisers should have gone ahead only when permission had been granted. In case if the permission already granted is withdrawn at the last moment, it then deserves to be highly condemned. I shall be the first one to condemn it.

Music lovers 1000 in number at NCPA is not a small gathering. Capacity of the hall is that much. It is wrong to compar this with gali cricket. Such comments only add fuel and aggrivate the situation. Ask those people from Panjab who suffered most due to partition and cannot visit Lahire which is 22 KMs from Amritsir .

It is an absurd local state law which requires foreign artists to get clearance to perform. Apparently, Maharashtra is the only state in India which has this law. If they have any common sense, the state legislators should revoke this ASAP. Having said that, it is plain stupid on the part of the band organizers/managers to have not known about this law.

Catch a glimpse of this band (they should be aptly called desi philharmonic) on youtube channel sachalsmusicchannel, simply astonishing. I hope they come to my hometown of Hyderabad (India) sometime in near future and perform. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

This is how Indians understand things. Most of the comments from Indians justify refusal of visa to the artists. They even can't understand that artists were issued visa Indian embassies and applicant have to mention the name of cities he want to visit in India. Artists were in possession of visas and permission to visit Mumbai. Of course they would have mentioned the purpose of visit.

@Jatin - Every Indian band is allowed to perform in Pakistan. It;s just they don't to perform because there is no money to be made. Whereas concerts in Pakistan are usually free. You must be very very young to not even know that Indian bands were the first ones to have performed in a concert in Pakistan back in mid to late 80's. So this trend of concerts was actually initiated by Punjabi Indian bands in Pakistan.

Mumbai killings is still in everyone's mind and no action yet by Pakistan. While this is inappropriate and unjust since its a music concert and music has no boundaries. I still have a question. Why is this always one-way, music bands/actors etc want to come to India which is good. But don't seem to ever come across news other way round i.e., indian music or artists presenting in Pakistan. A two-way handshake would solve the problem. Am I missing something?

Under most circumstances, I would have supported the band performing in Mumbai. Last thing I want to do is to support is a Fascist organization such as Shiv Sena. However, can you imagine the Paksitani police or ISI allowing an Indian band to perform in Karachi if 17 of their own (out of 138 deaths) had been killed by Indian terrorists, and the Indian government was dragging its feet, delaying prosecution and punishment of the Indian terrorists?

Thank you Mr. Arya for defending your fellow countryman, your just outrage re your country's visa denial for these talented musicians, as well as other potential visitors from Pakistan. If only Modi's admin had positive progressives like you, Indians and Pakistanis would have peaceful border crossings rather than border "wars."
BTW, one of my grandmother's brother in law is originally Marathi (they speak both Urdu and were raised speaking both Marathi and Urdu) Muslims from Bombay, and settled in Pakistan after Partition. Wonder if Modi would welcome them as visitors ?? ; )

If you actually believe the myth that this Kasab guy was Pakistani, then you also must believe that Pakistanis wear Hindu amulets and speak in Hindi crying for "Bhaghvan" to save him... which was the case when "Kasab" was interviewed by Mumbai police in a smuggled video which clearly showed this character speaking in Hindi - not Punjabi or Urdu. Your government never allowed Pakistan's investigation or legal govt. team to question this "Kasab" and your govt. never even provided a single shred of empirical evidence to prove this "Kasab" was from Pakistan. WHY?? Please stop accusing Pakistan of this heinous crime, it was perpetrated by your own people, so wise up and seek the truth - wherever it may lead you which is in your own backyard.

This is just an aberration. India has always welcomed Pakistani entertainers with open arms & the scores of Pakistani actors & musicians working in India are a testament to that. I don't know the reasoning behind the denial of visas for the Pakistani musicians by the Indian govt but unfortunately this kind of news gives a chance to some hawkish Pakistanis to come out & say "we told you so"!

The ludicrous linkages with the Mumbai tragedy to Pakistani jazz artists or Pakistan is so out of the realm of reality that it makes all these Indians look like they have the mind of a two-year old. By posting asinine anti-Pakistan rants connecting benign Pakistani jazz artists with an obvious false flag Shiv Sena operation in Mumbai is worse then outrageous, it smacks of sheer idiocy and a doomed robotic mindset.
If Pakistan did the same, and linked every terrorist bombing in Pakistan( w/o evidence as was done in the Mumbai attack) to every Indian artist wanting to visit Pakistan- then Juhi Chawla and her family, Shatrughan Sinha, his daughter Sonakshi, Om Puri, and many other Indian artists would never have been able to enter Pakistan, which all have done so - numerous times.

Too many Indians who wrongly believe the 26/11 Mumbai Taj attacks were executed by anyone connected to Pakistan need to think about who had the most to gain from this attack. The head of the anti-terror unit in Mumbai, Hemant Karkare was on the verge of arresting some extremely dangerous Shiv Sena terrorist who were in deep with some former Indian para military soldiers who were aiding and abetting Shiv Sena. By some sheer coincidence, Karkare was targeted point blank and shot over TEN TIMES and murdered within minutes of the attack on the Taj hotel. Recently his wife who knew the real truth behind these attacks, died mysteriously of a brain hemorrhage. She was in fear for her life, and had been threatened by " anonymous" calls and visitors to her home. Any thinking person could add 2+2 and it would equal 4, yet the Indians believing their own version of the truth about Mumbai, are saying 2+2=5.

This band was allowed to perform in Delhi and Pune (I think). Bombay was attacked by 10 non-State Pakistani actors on 26/11 who entered Bombay without any permission. Six Pakistani terrorists were killed while trying to cross over into India today in Kashmir.
