DOHA: As Nasir Iqbal exited the World Open, so did Pakistan’s interest at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

Nasir, the last surviving member of the Pakistan team, fell in the second round after he lost to Indian rival Saurav Ghosal 7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 4-11 here on Monday.

The young Pakistani gave a good test to his 14th-seeded opponent but his game deserted him in the fourth game on his way to losing the 51-minute encounter as Saurav made the last-16 at the event.

Egypt’s Amr Shabana, Max Lee of Hong Kong and South Africa’s Stephen Coppinger won their respective encounters to advance.

The 35-year-old Shabana beat Swiss world number 19 Nicolas Mueller 11-7, 20-18, 8-18, 11-4. Like Pakistan, Malaysia’s campaign also ended after the country’s sole survivor Ong Beng Hee lost 5-11, 6-11, 6-11 to Coppinger.

Results (x denotes seeded player):

Second round: Max Lee (HKG) bt Karim Gawad (EGYx15) 12-10, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 11-5; Tarek Momen (EGYx10) bt Tom Richards (ENG) 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7; Amr Shabana (EGYx5) bt Nicolas Mueller (SUI) 11-7, 20-18, 8-11, 11-4; Stephen Coppinger (RSA) bt Ong Beng Hee (MAS) 11-5, 11-6, 11-6; Saurav Ghosal (INDx14) bt Nasir Iqbal (PAK) 11-7, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4; Nich Matthew (ENGx3) bt Gregoire Marche (FRA) 11-6, 11-3, 11-4.
