LAHORE: Gullu Butt, the baton-wielding man seen damaging vehicles in Lahore during the Model Town tragedy who was sentenced to 11 years in jail, has challenged his sentence in the Lahore High Court on Thursday.

Shahid Aziz alias Gullu Butt was accused of smashing private vehicles with a club outside the Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Model Town on June 17 when police were trying to remove barriers from outside the residence of Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri.

Police personnel did not stop Butt and were on the contrary seen to be encouraging him. His act of vandalism was caught by TV cameras.

Faisal Town police had registered a case against Gullu Butt. On October 30, an ATC in Lahore had sentenced Butt to 11 years in prison and had also enforced a fine of Rs100,000 on him.

Butt's counsels appealed on his behalf today and presented the stance that his client's crime could not be proved despite the production of witnesses and evidence and yet he was handed a sentence.

He requested the court to issue an order to abolish Butt's jail sentence.

The LHC registrar objected to the fact that a power of attorney was not attached and therefore his appeal could not be accepted.

Butt's lawyers said that they will submit the certified papers and file a re-appeal in the court.
