KARACHI: Jehiel Mumtaz Butt, a 12-year-old of Pakistani-origin, will be performing the signature song at the US Open during the evening session on Friday.

Jehiel, whose father Mumtaz Butt hails from Karachi, will sing ‘America the beautiful’ after being selected through an open audition in which some 400 children participated.

“Jehiel has manifested talent for performing arts from a very early age,” Mumtaz Butt told Dawn through an e-mail on Thursday.

A student of grade eight at the Baccalaureate School For Global Education, Jehiel has been learning classical Indian music since the age of six and has featured in several musical plays in New York.
