SUKKUR: Akhtar Abbasi, an independent candidate for a National Assembly seat in the May 11, 2013 general elections, was shot dead by unknown assailants near Manzilgah Ground here on Saturday night.

Mr Abbasi, who had filed his nomination papers for NA-198 Sukkur, was going somewhere on his motorcycle when unknown attackers opened fire on him near the ground on Bunder Road.

He died on the spot and the attackers fled the scene. The C-Section police took the body to the Sukkur Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The deceased was laid to rest on Sunday.

The motive behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately.

The bereaved family told the police that a decision about lodging an FIR or otherwise would be taken later.
