LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, a Canada based Islamic cleric, returned to Pakistan on Monday to try to start what he has called a “peaceful revolution” against the government, as his supporters engaged in violent clashes with police.

He touched down in the eastern city of Lahore after his flight was diverted from Islamabad following violence at the capital's airport that police said left more than 70 of their officers injured.

In January last year Qadri drew tens of thousands of people to a sit-in protest in Islamabad. His return comes at a sensitive time for the government, potentially adding to pressure on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The military is in the midst of a major offensive against Taliban militants in the northwest, and nine people were killed when Qadri's followers clashed with police in Lahore a week ago.

On Monday his supporters, armed with sticks and bricks, clashed with baton-wielding police at Islamabad's airport, where Qadri had been due to arrive on an Emirates flight.

A spokesman for Islamabad police said more than 70 officers were wounded, with several suffering broken bones and head injuries.

The plane was diverted to Lahore “to ensure the safety of the passengers and aircraft,” according to a civil aviation official. But for several hours Qadri refused to get off.

The 63-year-old demanded protection from the military before agreeing to disembark. He finally left the aircraft accompanied by Punjab provincial governor Mohammad Sarwar and opposition politician Chaudhry Pervaiz Ellahi.

Qadri said he held the prime minister and his brother Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab, responsible for the killing of his party workers last week, comparing the pair to “Hitler and Mussolini”.

“I will revenge InshaAllah (God willing). I will revenge for the labourers, helpless, poor and martyrs,” he said at a Lahore hospital as he visited those wounded in last week's clashes.

Addressing workers at his residence later, Qadri said he would “announce a date for revolution” shortly. “I will give a sudden call,” he said.

“The rulers will try to run away, but I won't let the looters run away.”

Qadri had led a huge sit-in lasting over four days while the previous Pakistan People's Party (PPP) government was in power, four months before it lost the May 2013 general election to Sharif's party.

He had demanded the early dissolution of the PPP government and the implementation of a caretaker setup backed by the military and judiciary.

But despite intense media interest, the protest had little long-term impact – Qadri ended his sit-in after talks with ministers and the election went ahead as planned.

Qadri is the founding leader of Tehreek-i-Minhajul Quran (TMQ), an organisation with branches in more than 90 countries which works to promote peace and harmony between communities.

His sudden and apparently well-financed emergence last year after years living in Canada was seen by some analysts as a plot by sections of the establishment to delay the elections and regain power – AFP

PML-N’s Saad Rafique tells DawnNews, “Tahirul Qadri seems to have hijacked the Emirates aircraft at Lahore airport.”He adds that elsewhere in the country, PAT workers are vandalizing property in protest. He would certainly have been offloaded at Islamabad airport had his supporters not broken security barricades and been indisciplined, he said.“I am hopeful that Dr Qadri will disembark from the aircraft,” he added. “Why should the armed forces talk to him - does Tahirul Qadri think he is a terrorist? His statements are childish.”

He also said that the government is trying to suppress the constitutional rights of citizens. "Altaf Hussain has condemned it in strong words saying no unconstitutional or dictatorial act would be accepted."

He added that the government should have provided Qadri with security. "Instead, government has sealed the capital for the last two days, creating problems not for PAT alone but for every other citizen and it has presented a negative image of Pakistan to the entire world and it reflected like there was no democracy in Pakistan."

Very unfortunate for Tahirul Qadri to declaring and meaning harm to Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is my prayer that the Country does not suffer any setback/s. Enough damage has been done by previous administrations with rare exceptions. Present set up is The Best Last Hope for Pakistan. TQ's reverence for the Musharraf's Dictatorial Regime while elected member of the National Assembly in recent past was glaring & amazing lack of respect for Democracy & Constitution of Pakistan. Now they are grouping behind same mindset of TQ.

Sharif govt has lost its credibility so should resign. The myth that Sharifs have heavy popular mandate has been evaporated in the air. Arrests, tear gas, baton charge and firing on protestors have exposed rulers' claims of being democratic. their days are numbered. This is not only the beginning of the end game of government but politics of Sharif family has now also come to an end. Whether there is a revolution or not but a revolution has come into Punjab politics where there would be no more Sharifs in any future scenario.

At this point he should be arrested. People were killed because of his actions, and our forces rather than dealing with the terrorists they were spend I no their recourses for this situation. The Terrorist have threaten to blow up the airports and post immense casualty on govt and political leader while Tahir ul Qadri is doing something which is not unique. There is nothing wrong to ask or stage for reform by any one in Pakistan but at this critical time, is it really worth to have sit in and mobilized thousand of people to protest. Cant he just wait a couple of weeks? Is he merely creating favorite target for Taliban or bringing justice to those 9 people killed in clashes with police? I'm hundred percent sure if Taliban hit Qadri's gathering it will go against the Govt and there will another rally.

PML-N has made major political mistakes and has made a hero of Qadri - A) They should have let him arrive at Islamabad and continue to Lahore by road as per his plan - B) Government should have established a Judicial commission for inquiry of the Lahore incident and CM Punjab should have resigned as demanded by Qadri. 1. Musharraf comes back to Pakistan and Nawaz Sharif creates legal problems for him.
  2. Musharraf gets arrested and is now on the Exit Control List.
  3. Sharif meets Modi in New Delhi.
  4. Two weeks after meeting, Pak Army launches Zarb-e-Azb. There is no prior information of operation in the media.
  5. Qadri starts a protest in which people are killed.
  6. Qadri lands in Pakistan.

If there is a connection

Whereas I endorse Qadri sahib's vision to try and revolutionize the mindset of the people of Pakistan, I do not endorse his methods and lifestyle. Khomeini was able to do that with Iran not so much by words but by example. Qadri Sahib, live in a two room unairconditioned house like Khomeini, reprimand your workers for attacking police with sticks and stones, and visit the police injured by PAT kaarkuns in the hospitals.

PMLN have failed the state so many times and there is no hope now. They took extreme measures when they unlawfully targeted PAT workers at Lahore on the 17th. killing many and injuring hundreds for life. They have crossed all limits, sending police to remove barriers but target shooting and killing is way beyond. Nothing can justify their action. and again today they unlawfully diverted International Emirates flight for no reason what so ever. What are PMLN playing at, they are digging their own hole and inviting Dr Qadri's revolution

Pakistan need a revolution for sure. But not in streets or in Islamabad. It needs revolution in social and moral values of its people first. Change in Islamabad will only come when people are honest, and knows the difference between a cleric who is driven by foreign money and motives, Fuedals who want to rape its people from their rights. There is hardly a NATIONAL leader who is clean slate from past corruption. Change in Islamabad will automatically happen when your people are morally and socially honest, aware and above all has the tolerance or accept a difference of opinion.

  2. And demands that the Governor escort this Revolutionary into the city.
  3. AND, the Governor obliges.

Pakistan certainly is a funny place.

Pakistan has enough on it's plate - why do we need to add more tension and insecurity? Let us handle the problems with the insurgents and our present government has just started to deal with them now. By causing disruptions, we will not be able to focus on this most critical issue and in fact, we might even be helping these terrorists in causing havoc!

In their dislike (some would say hatred) of the PML-N government it seems to be pretty sad that parties like PTI and others, whom I admire, are failing to recognize the shortcomings of Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri. Up to now, starting from his promises last year, he has backed down in front of adversity every time. The latest episode, take the plane back to I'bad, to not getting off till Army comes in, to allow my persona guards only and then meekly agreeing to the governor presence shows this man is really not serious. Dedicated though his admirable supporters are but I would be very wary of following such a man if my future let alone my life depended on it.

Why don't people listen to his message? If Mr. Qadri wants to have a say in a democratic country than he should go by democratic norms, he should contest the election. If he did the same thing in Canada as he is doing in Pakistan he will end up in jail. In Canada if you want to protest you have to get a municipal permission, you can then protest only in the approved location. Municipal government will ensure that the city does not come to a halt. It is possible that he has done a lot of good for the people of Pakistan, this however does not give him any right to become disruptive. File a case with the courts, do all the things you are allowed legally.

People of Pakistan have to stand with the truth otherwise we and our future generations will face these tyrants for ever under the existing system, which is totally corrupt. Our people must not follow blindly their leaders as they have been lying to them for the last 65 years. I am not in favour of all what Qadree is saying but at least he is talking about the change in system, he wants to abolish this corrupt system, he alone cannot do this we need to support his idea, this is only possible if we start quitting to believe in our political Godfathers, these cults exist in every party. Tell me one party in Pakistan where there is no Godfather. Till us not change our mind there will be no revolution and we will continue to suffer as a nation.
