KARACHI: Pakistani officials say a brazen five-hour attack by militants on the international airport in Karachi left 28 people, including 10 attackers, dead but police managed to regain control of the terminal.

Rizwan Akhtar, the paramilitary Rangers chief, said all 10 “terrorists” who attacked the Jinnah International Airport have been killed.

He said Pakistani forces were combing through the terminal and would hand it back to civilian authority later Monday.

The attack started late Sunday when gunmen disguised as police guards stormed the terminal after opening fire with machine guns and a rocket launcher.

Akhtar said some of the attackers were apparently Uzbeks.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack all but destroys prospects for significant peace talks with the government of Nawaz Sharif, who came to power last year promising to find a negotiated solution to years of violence.

Peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban have failed in recent months, dampening hopes of reaching a negotiated settlement with the insurgency, which continues attacks against government and security targets.

Live updates

Prime minister's adviser on civil aviation Shujaat Azeem said the airport will be operational at 4 pm.

The prime minister has directed aviation and airport authorities to facilitate passengers by providing them all possible facilities.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed airport authorities to reopen the airport for routine operations without unnecessary delay.

Mohmand said the government will have to adopt a long-term strategy to tackle the problem of terrorism.

PTI-appointed member of the government committee to negotiate with the TTP Rustam Shah Mohmand said any talks for cessation of hostilities with the TTP will now be held on the government's conditions.

Those killed included 11 airport security guards and four workers from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Their bodies were taken to the Jinnah hospital where another 26 wounded people were being treated.

Security forces just said they have cleared the Karachi airport of militants nearly 12 hours after the start of a siege that left at least 24 people dead, a paramilitary official said.

“The attack is over and we have cleared the area of all militants, and we will hand over the airport to the Civil Aviation Authority at 12.00 pm (0700 GMT),” paramilitary Rangers spokesman Sibtain Rizvi told reporters.

The TTP further said: “It's just the beginning, we have taken revenge for one (Mehsud), we have to take revenge for hundreds.”

“We carried out this attack on the Karachi airport and it is a message to the Pakistan government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages,” the TTP spokesman said.

Shahidullah Shahid moreover dismissed the Pakistani government's peace talks methodology as a “tool of war”.

Shahidullah Shahid said the attack was planned much earlier but had been postponed due to the peace talks.

The TTP spokesman in a statement issued to the media said that the attack was also carried out to avenge the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud in a US drone strike.

“We carried out this attack on the Karachi airport and it is a message to the Pakistani government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages,” TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said.

Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for the army's air strikes in areas along the Afghan border where the insurgents are based.

Another three rocket launchers, five suicide jackets, 15 petrol bombs and five SMGs recovered from the airport.

Doctor Seemi Jamali of the JPMC said so far 18 bodies have been brought to the hospital.

Chaudhry Nisar has summoned a report of the incident from IG Sindh Police.

The minister commended security forces on fighting terrorists during the crisis that enveloped the airport in Karachi.

Chaudhry Nisar condoled with family members of those killed in the terrorist attack.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan strongly condemned the attack on the airport.

Imran Khan said government's policy towards tackling terrorism has failed.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said the attack on the airport was a matter of grave concern.

An AFP reporter at the scene said gunshots could be heard inside the airport and that rangers and elite commandos were rushing inside.

“We have relaunched the operation and called in additional troops,” said Sibtain Rizvi, spokesman for the Rangers paramilitary force.

A military operation was relaunched at the airport as gunfire resumed several hours after the army announced the end of a militant siege that left 24 dead.

President Mamnoon commended the role of security forces during the operation against attackers.

President Mamnoon Hussain condemned the attack on the airport saying the cowardly action could not overpower the government's will to counter terrorism.

A search operation was conducted by the security forces in the early hours of Monday morning during which five sub-machine guns (SMGs), three suicide jackets, two rocket launchers and 12 petrol bombs were recovered.

“The militants appear to be Uzbek,” he said.

“Three militants blew themselves up and seven were killed by security forces,” Akhtar said in televised remarks.

Akhtar said the attackers were ethnic Uzbeks.

Director General of Sindh Rangers Maj-Gen Rizwan Akhtar addressing a press conference claimed that unidentified foreign militants appeared to be involved in the attack.

At least 23 people were reportedly killed in the incident, including security personnel.

Ten militants were also among the dead.

ISPR spokesman Asim Bajwa said the militants "were confined to two areas and eliminated."

Bajwa said weapons, live ammunition, including RPGs, were recovered from the militants.

Bajwa said that they were wearing large packs on their bodies.

He also said that Raheel Sharif "paid rich tribute to all shaheed and injured for their supreme sacrifice".

The ISPR spokesman said that Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif "congratulated participating troops for a well coordinated, successful operation eliminating all militants".

Some eight to 10 attackers were said to have engaged security forces in a gunbattle.

Earlier, Pakistan Army troops were called in to deal with the situation and troops from Malir Cantonment were dispatched, while police commandos and Karachi Rangers were assisting.

A huge explosion was heard over two hours into the attack. A second large explosion was heard near the airport workshop. A third massive explosion was heard a further 30-40 minutes in. Huge clouds of smoke continue to dominate the skyline.

Intermittent firing took place at the airport, while large plumes of smoke were seen over the cargo terminal.

One plane each of PIA and AirBlue, and a cargo plane of a foreign company were reported to have been damaged.

A hand grenade attack was also carried out on the Isphani Hanger.

Suicide bombers were reportedly part of the militant squad that has infiltrated the airport.

Staff was rescued by security personnel and moved to safer areas. Rescue teams were allowed in after being checked thoroughly. Passengers were evacuated and moved to a secure location.

Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif called DG Rangers Sindh and asked him to ensure the safety of passengers.

All flight operations at Jinnah Terminal were suspended and flights were diverted to other airports.

Pakistan correspondent for the Daily Telegraph Rob Crilly reported that he had spoken to MQM leader Farooq Sattar and stated that, "He sounds calm but understandably concerned about being stuck on plane filled with aviation fuel."

How they got in

The attackers were said to have forged fake ID cards to pose as ASF personnel and had managed to enter the area that way.

Broken glass and used gun magazines littered the engineering section where the first exchange of gunfire took place.

The militants carried out the attack from three different sides, officials said, while there were reports that two terrorists managed to get inside a plane.

Is there anywhere in Pakistan, where people can feel safe? With so much security at every airport in the world, how could such an incident occur at an international airport in a major city like Karachi?

kamran Jun 08, 2014 11:56pm

My mother and brother-in-law were travelling to Karachi this night.

The audacity of the attackers is simply remarkable. This is after all a once bustling airport of the world's most populated region. Whatever happened to the notion of a government governing the people?

This will really effect not just the foreigners coming to Pakistan, but also the Pakistanis living abroad would think twice before coming to Pakistan.

Mustafa J. Jun 09, 2014 12:14am

It is high time Government of Pakistan must offer substantial rewards to informers who provide tips on existence of militants and terrorists leading to their capture dead or alive, The rewards may include well paying jobs, higher education within or outside Pakistan.

John Sutton Jun 09, 2014 12:27am

The time has surely come for Pakistan to take the offensive against terrorists, even though it is late.

Truth Jun 09, 2014 12:29am

PPP Security money Khappay! At leasy they should spend on security. or May the terrorists are too good for them....

Rahela Jun 09, 2014 12:29am

It is just getting worse. These people need to be dealt with accordingly. It is an attack on Pakistan and there should be no more negotiation with groups like this. Even Khan will have to understand that eventually.

Ganga Din Jun 09, 2014 12:30am

This is typical Pakistani style tit for tat. You attack them in Waziristan and they attack you in Karachi, Now what? Reminds me of Iraq.

sharouk Jun 09, 2014 12:36am

With security situation supposed to be so tight, how could the terrorists enter with Fake IDs?

Umar Jun 09, 2014 12:37am

Shame on the sharif-bhutto-zardari dynasty! All the members of this corrupt, dysfunctional and discredited dynasty moves with high security themselves but they have no concern for the masses...indeed it is their policies that results in such incidents. The only force capable of governing pakistan is the army... At least it isn't dynastic!

Mohammad Jun 09, 2014 12:37am

They abuse army ...... and when in emergency .... they always call them...

Sunny (USA) Jun 09, 2014 12:38am

I had written a comment a couple of days earlier about security in Pakistan and specifically at the airports.....somehow it never got published by the editors. Security in Pakistan is a genuine concern. It's no wonder that NO western airline flies directly to Pakistan and go only till Gulf countries, Central Asia. The passengers are then transitioned by airlines such as Gulf, QatarAirlines, PIA etc.

nagina Jun 09, 2014 12:38am

Forged 'fake' ID cards. One would forge a fake. To forge an ID card I can understand.

lekhraj Jun 09, 2014 12:39am

Shocked!!! Why they always use violence to speak?

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 12:43am

I hope that our security forces and civic defense learns from this episode and also increase the number of the emergency assets such as fire engines, fire fighters and fire fighting equipment.

@Umar - when things happen in KPK people blame it on IK but karachi is not blamed on MQM

@sharouk Security is only tight for ordinary folks like you and me as far as terrorists are concerned they some how always manage to find a hole in the security and then carry out such heinous and despicable act against innocent citizens.

Pakistan is spending 1.7 Trillion rupees in total this year on defence and security establishment and this is the level of service they get in return. In contrast 1.3 Trillion is being spent on debt servicing and 0.9 Trillion for running the country. My goodness! When are they going to wake up?

@Umar Army controls ASF. It was the military which was supposed to guard mehran base and GHQ but attackers stormed these installations. Lets not blame civilian govt for everything.

Aslam Jun 09, 2014 01:03am

@Umar Bhai ji army apny Naval Base? Air Base? or GHQ tau bacha ly pehly. Phr apko govern bhi krly gi. Non-conventional tactics require non-conventional anti-terror measures which, at present, the country's armed forces lack. Try constructive criticism sometime and try to come out of masochistic notions of being rules by the baton. Thank You.

Just hearing reports that all police commandos are on VIP duties. Shame on this democracy. We have had enough of these politicians. These are most corrupt, incapable and self serving.

Irfan Baloch Jun 09, 2014 01:06am

disgraceful once again the terrorists have shown how easily they can destroy our claims

Faruq Jun 09, 2014 01:06am

My heart hurts. Does the central government not care for FATA, Waziristan, Karachi or anywhere that's not Punjab? The country is burning, and yet they still try to talk peace with these people

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 01:07am

@Umar : I liked Musharraf a lot but now that we have a democratic setup, we need to let it run. Everytime we change from civil to military and back we lose many years of organizational development. We need to continue with what we have now and not change. We need to let the govt. work and give them time to clean the mess without creating more problems for them.

AJamal Jun 09, 2014 01:07am

Awaiting a tweet from Mariam Nawaz to console this shocked nation.

Dystopia Jun 09, 2014 01:08am

"Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has called DG Rangers Sindh and asked him to ensure the safety of passengers." Mashallah how benevolent of you Mian Sahab. Always looking out for the masses. Maybe you could avoid having to ensure safety of passengers next time if you tried misgoverning the country a bit less but I am sure you have that mind.

Atam Vetta Jun 09, 2014 01:13am

Terrorists can choose from thousands of targets and also have access to better weapon. No Government or Army in the world is immune to terrorism. Pak Army now knows who is the real enemy and will prevail despite the foolish politicians who covertly provide 'moral' support to terrorists.

Suq Madieq Jun 09, 2014 01:15am

There was once a farmer who raised cobras in his house to scare the outsiders from stealing fruits from his trees. One day the cobras bit and killed his child. When you raise snakes in your backyard, be prepared to be bitten. May lord have mercy on the soul of brave and innocent folks who died today in this heinous crime. Wake up Pakistan, else there won't be any future.

Ganga Din Jun 09, 2014 01:16am

So move to Ethiopia.

Badar Jun 09, 2014 01:16am

@Umar : Shame..Why did you forgot MUSH....WHo has put us in this situation? His bad deeds and actions have put pakistan in trouble when he signed up with so called Fake War on Terror which is actually War on Pakistan.

Sam Jun 09, 2014 01:17am

@Sarmad No it's not. Total aircraft movements are Karachi airport is approximately 50,000 compare that to over 900,000 for Atlanta and almost 900,000 for Chicago. The 2nd airport in Chicago (Midway) had total aircraft movement of 250,000 last year. So, Karachi may be the busiest in Pakistan, it's not way near the top 100 in the world. Even London Heathrow is #10 in the list.

vikas Jun 09, 2014 01:18am

horrible news .. jus read from bbc .

Khurram Jun 09, 2014 01:18am

Taliban have taken over Karachi it seems. Pak Army need to concentrate on Karachi and not Waziristan. A big operation against Taliban led by Army Commandoes should be done and Karachi should be cleansed of the Taliban as soon as possible. It is the most important need of the current time.

FMAC Jun 09, 2014 01:18am

Ali Jun 09, 2014 01:19am

I drove past the Airport at 10:30 PM with my family from the Stargate road towards Ramada, on to the road that runs right by the Airport... I had been in that area for an extended period of time, i.e since 7:00 PM, I even thought of going to the Airport for McDonald's.. Alhamdulillah, I had a change of heart... May those at the airport be safe and the ones affected get out of the turmoil soon.

Mustafa Jun 09, 2014 01:27am

While I agree with the general sentiment of disbelief and horror of the audacity of the attacks, the incompetence of the government and the frequency of such attacks (the attack at the GHQ being another example), my biggest fear is that the government using this as an excuse will impose more sanctions and control on an already repressed population.

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 01:28am

Our security forces need to train better to situations like these. If the govt. needs to increase the budget expenditure, it has to be for things like these and not for useless stuff.

Mustafa Jun 09, 2014 01:40am

@Umer Criticism is not a a bad thing, don't be blinded by patriotism. You can't tell people to leave the country based on their views, that is kinda extreme.

Sultan Alvi, Canada Jun 09, 2014 01:41am

Element of surprise is always with the terrorists. Unless you have prior information of the attack, it is impossible to stop it. Security of key targets 24/7 is very difficult in Pakistan.

At least, we should start our operation against these evil people now and try to give them a dose of their own medicine. May God help Pakistan and Pak army....Aameen!

Mateen Jun 09, 2014 01:43am

This is cleary an attack by foreign elements whom want Pakistan's financial hub to be further weakened than it already is. European direct flights to Pakistan have been banned for several years as we are not considered a safe nation, now what do you expect will happen to Pakistans largest airport.

maria Jun 09, 2014 01:44am

Syed M.H. Rizvi Jun 09, 2014 01:49am

Shame on Nawaz Sharif group for the hidden support of terrorists and the financial support from Saudi Arabia. Unless and until we have a fair and independent government in the country this massacre can never stop and the country will keep burning, the poor masses of the country will keep suffering from the greed and self centered interests of out already tested politician.

We now should realize the importance of having General Pervaiz Musharraf back in power or someone one like him who puts Pakistan first.

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 01:49am

@Riza Afghan : We can very much suspect the Afghan govt. in this.

AJamal Jun 09, 2014 01:51am

@AW . Your demand for the CM and Governor's resignation doesn't make sense. ASF is solely responsible for the airport security and interestingly ASF comes under Army as a paramilitary force. So another huge failure of our Army.

mansoor Jun 09, 2014 01:53am

God would not save Pakistan from Pakistanis.

Indian Jun 09, 2014 01:55am

Rahul Jun 09, 2014 01:56am

@Mohammad No offence but its the army's job...a brave job they are doing but its not as if people should not have the right to question the army when they are wrong...

Shazia Bangash Jun 09, 2014 01:56am

@Just Someone Really? Is it so much better to die in a road accident in Missisauga or Bradford than to get caught up in a terrorist attack at Khi airport? The probabilities and statistics are the same.

Bilal Jun 09, 2014 01:59am

Question asked in GHQ: Was it done by good taliban or bad ones?

Harmony Jun 09, 2014 01:59am

@Umar - Blame the people who vote these dynasties to power.

Dr.S.A. Hyder Jun 09, 2014 02:01am

@Sunny (USA) Good, sane and honest comments are seldom published by the newspapers! So do not complain.

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 02:03am

@maria : Totally agree with you. Our salutes should be for our martyrs both in the security forces and also for any civilian officials or passengers that may have been killed or wounded.

This incident must be thoroughly investigated and appropriate security measures must be taken. People responsible must be brought to the book.

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 02:04am

Once the operation is over and the situation turns normal, the media should publish a complete timeline of events.

Sami Jun 09, 2014 02:11am

I think we should also get away with these dynastic politics which take turns after turn on power. Some strong and dedicated personality like Modi, should take hold of power. Imran Khan has to project himself as people's leader. But firstly, he has to be educated of the evils of Ttp, jhangvi, l e t and others. We have to understand that fire we try to raise in our neighbors. Is going to engulf the whole of Pakistan. Sad very sad.

Justice Jun 09, 2014 02:11am

Lomax Jun 09, 2014 02:12am

Obviously the Politicians and the clerics have no ablity ( or willingness ) to stop this madness. I'm resisting the idea of another Military rule, but it is up to the people to separate emotion and religion from logic. These fanatics now are living and organizing in Pakistans largest cities. This is not something that only happen in the hills. If he people will not stand up and protect their children and future, who will ? the Military ? the Iranians ? Perhaps the Chinese who are buildind a base on the coast ?

ilyas Jun 09, 2014 02:15am

None competent employes everywhere in Pakistan, No concerned Diploma, training or ability to deal the things what they paid for. They take mostly everything so easy particularly for security issues. Nothing to do everything with PM every official should be responsible of their field. Even God never do anything for us until we move themselves to handle own tasks etc. may Allah Bless Pakistan! Amin.

It is time that we adopt the torch & scorch policy used by the State of Israel against the Palestinians. Once the perpetrators are identified then they should be made an example of by having their assets confiscated or destroyed.......

Amir khan Jun 09, 2014 02:44am

Nadir Jun 09, 2014 02:46am

@Aisha - Where did you get the notion that the Intelligence is the best in the world?

Harmony Jun 09, 2014 02:49am

Ali Jun 09, 2014 03:01am

@Naeem - they did for yrs and still have karachi

Sarosh Ahmed Jun 09, 2014 03:03am

@Ghulam Mustafa I trust the sweeping statment " Shame on ASF" that you have just given is based on the usual comments that everyone makes without realizing that its because of the Brave ASF team that stopped these terrorists to move towards the Jinnah terminal building, which could have been far more detrimental. 4 ASF soldiers were martyred. I believe the least we can do is offer them some respect to them.

APatel, USA Jun 09, 2014 03:04am

Are the attackers identified yet ? Everything looks weird, something smells fishy. There are too many groups operating in Karachi, any one may be involved. From politicians to terrorists, everybody is playing DIRTY GAMES/POLITICS. MAY ALLAH HAVE MERCY ON PAKISTANIS AND SPECIALLY ON THE PEOPLE OF KARACHI.

Syed Jun 09, 2014 03:05am

@independentthinker I think u haven't understood the seriousity of the well planned and organised attack by foreign Intelligence agencies!

Sarosh Ahmed Jun 09, 2014 03:06am

Sad and I pray for the deseased soliders. And I hope our Government probes and find the hands behind these terrorists. Without any diplomacy and personal gain point out the fingers in the right directions, rather then trying to be nice and not saying anything to the enemy.

So there is Indian Taliban

Hemant Jun 09, 2014 03:11am

How many actually believe that "Indian arm and ammunition" was found on the terrorists?

Just Someone Jun 09, 2014 03:11am

@Shazia Bangash : You are the only one who would question the statistics and probability of such an event happening and rightly so. Unfortunately most the people wouldn't. For most people it establishes Pakistan and especially Karachi as even more dangerous.

AW Jun 09, 2014 03:12am

Indian made weapons have been found on terrorists. Indian Government talks of peace, but uses every opportunity to create terror in Karachi, KPK and in Baluchistan. PM and those who desperately want friendship with India, should take a step back in terms of their expectations. Move cautiously- first verify then trust

Charlie Chaplen Jun 09, 2014 03:15am

These events usually happen to convince leaders to submit to foreign policies. So foreign leaders will say "do what we ask - or you can expect more of this". Expect concessions to foreign interests.

Sher Jun 09, 2014 03:17am

This NOT TTP job, please understand, These are RAW trained agents, trained in Afghanistan and make sure to catch them alive, and bomb their factories even if we have to go Afghanistan or India. This is the right time to finish their routes.

Saleem Khan Jun 09, 2014 03:20am

Shame on all Leaders. I suggest they should sit together, unit the entire country and wage full war against terrorists, and kick-out any one trying to harm Pakistan. If any Pakistani is trying to harm Pakistan then he/she is not Pakistani but the traitor. Please please all Politicians, wake up. Nawaza Sharif: There Is not just Punjab. Altaf Hussain: Stop the dram and leave Karachi people alone. Jamat-i-Islami: Stop making people fool in the name of Islam and stop destroying future of young lives, and stop creating these Jihadis. Imran Khan: Stop protesting all the time and sit with Politicians and talk, and then I may see you as a Leader. You are my last hope. K

MEDUSA Jun 09, 2014 03:24am

May Allahtallah grant our brave ASF shaheed jannat and all others injured in this cowardly attack full and speedy recovery, Ameen.

This attack took place at an older terminal @ Jinnah International airport so no passengers were harmed, yet sadly this terminal is still used for other purposes such as airplane maintenance, etc.

Why isn't our spineless govt. and Parliamentarians pointing fingers at Modi's India as its obvious they had a hand in this entire attack?? The timing is blatantly obvious for Modi and his defense apparatus to start his warpath against Pakistan. This horrific battle is indicative of an RSS or Shiv Sena attack. It goes without saying, if this type of violent operation happened in India, the zealous over nationalist Indian media and Modi's people would be the first to accuse Pakistanis of orchestrating such a devious operation just as Modi and his ilk did with the Taj Mumbai attacks without any hard evidence or empirical proof.

Pakistan however won't sink to the bottom feeder level of sham conduct India engages itself in with its anti-Pakistan charades. Pakistan, in contrast has cool heads in both the media and government which won't practice knee-jerk and baseless propaganda against its enemy even when the enemy continually undermines and insults the very core of Pakistan's raison d'etre.

Dev Jun 09, 2014 03:25am

Very sad. All this senseless waste of lives. Our thoughts with the people of Pakistan. Its time the Pakistani security forces throw out the radical people that have infiltrated their ranks. Do it now or do it later, eventually you will arrive at this conclusion.

Imran Taliban khan wants to talk to these terrorist now... Shame imrAn

S Khan Jun 09, 2014 03:30am

This is a proxy war of regional power, Afghanistan, India, Pakistani intelligence agencies at work in each others countries. And of course many more interested parties. Think wisely look for solutions for the sake of average Pakistanis, put your egos away and find a solutions. Stop interfering in each other business. I do not care when you play with fire sooner or later fire will burn you too.

ASH Jun 09, 2014 04:24am

Human life seems to be worthless in Pakistan. Such an incident is unheard of in modern history. Even the worst of countries on the planet are not so exposed to blatant attacks by terrorists. The fact that the entire airport is under siege speaks volumes of the incompetence of the authorities. Nothing is greater than the integrity of human life. Too many innocent lives have been lost over all these years. One feels sorry for the distress Pakistanis face every day of their lives. One hopes and prays that there is no further loss and that this traumatic episode comes to an end soon.

Billions of tax dollars are spent on Defence forces that can't even defend the biggest airport in the country. That's what the enquiry should be about. Who was sleeping on the job while the terrorists were readying their attack. Are we really getting our money's worth when we spend billions on Defence?

nasir Jun 09, 2014 04:38am

I was checked 8 times, i counted, when I was departing the airport. Yet some people were getting expedite treatment thru it all

MMM Jun 09, 2014 04:57am

@Anwer that is another extreme. There are so many different form of violence. Some do this because of their twisted mentality. Some do it to avenge wrongs done to their loved ones. Some do it for their greed and power. Unfortunately, most "patriots" look the other way when their side does atrocities to the other side. First and foremost should be the quest for the justice for all and curbing of the greed.

Shariq Iqbal Jun 09, 2014 04:59am

Respected Editors I am originally from Karachi ,and certainly horrified by the attack,it's very depressing to see things turning from bad to worse. God help us Pakistan certainly needs a better intelligence gathering and infiltration into these groups

Congratulations to the forces for swiftly ending the attack. Terrorists are slipping up. It is time to eliminate them.

AliPasha Jun 09, 2014 05:11am

Why didn't Chaudry Nisar politely ask the Taiban to lay down their arms and not attack the airport.I am sure that they would have listenened to him and left the airport in peace.

AliPasha Jun 09, 2014 05:13am

@Hemant Whom do you think is providing them weapons and logistic support.India is no friend of Pakistan and will find every opportunity to harm Pakistan.

Farooq M.Hashmi Jun 09, 2014 05:40am

Nothing can be more heartening than that all the ten terrorists have been dispatched to hell. It was no surprise that the ammunition they used was Indian-made. Blood boils in veins at Pakistan government's apologetic stance towards India at her recurring provocative and aggressive activities in Pakistan.

Himanshu Singh Jun 09, 2014 05:42am

Salute to brave commandos who lost their lives..RIP !!! .need better coordination amongst top intelligence agencies of the world to thwart these kind of incidents.

Asif Ali Jun 09, 2014 05:53am

When country is ruled/ruined by fake degree holders who empower fake merit and bypass all laws to bring their friends and cousins on the seats of high morale and authority, what else should one be expecting? A true democratically elected government that can think better than haleem, paye, nihari etc, is the only solution to the chronic and massive mismanagement. In-time "Justice" is keyword here and then only we can prosper and bring peace and harmony to our country.

Terrorist has no nationality nor they belong to any religion. Terrorists are just terrorists and must be dealt accordingly.

I deeply feel sorry for the poor and innocent lives that are lost in this unforeseen tragic incident.

Agha Ata Jun 09, 2014 05:56am

Such an attack is not the first time, but every time there is an attack of this type, it becomes clear that the place didn't have a fool- proof security arrangement. I wonder when the responsible people would do the needful.

Ishrat Jun 09, 2014 05:57am

@independentthinker With so much security at the air ports os USA, how did 9/11 happen ?

Ishrat Jun 09, 2014 05:59am

Ishrat Jun 09, 2014 06:00am

@Syed Exactly, they have better security. They have no airport. Why don't you go and live there ?

Najma Jun 09, 2014 06:01am

Another brilliant display of chaos at Karachi Airport. The video coverage tells the best state of affairs in Pakistan. Sindh CM sleeps at 6 PM so how come he is reported to to supervising the security operation. It is shame to see how poorly Pakistanis manage a crisis. I am also wondering that how come the casualty numbers of security personal and the terrorist the same. The so called Pak security and fuji are not to trained. I can smell corruption all over again. Rs.20 can get you access to anywhere you want. Some security person is sitting happily counting his 20 rupees.

Mailk Ajmal Khan Jun 09, 2014 06:03am

AA Jun 09, 2014 06:26am

Rishi Jun 09, 2014 06:26am

Pak soul Jun 09, 2014 07:10am

@Bakhtawer What you are saying is that if your brother slaughters innocent Pakistani men, women and children, it is OK with you because he is your brother. You do not want security forces to kill him to prevent more slaughter. In other words every militant and terrorist who is lucky to have a brother like you, Mr. Bakhtawer, he should not be touched by Armed Forces. Are you serious or you are joking?

This is a typical false-flag operation by I-S-I to achieve its hidden objectives. Now you will hear about blaming Afghan/ Indian / American intelligence, by planting fake evidence like so called recovery of foreign arms of particular countries, etc. The world will not get fooled by such propaganda, as credibility of Pak agencies is big zero.

NORI Jun 09, 2014 07:20am

Good job done in repulsing the terrorist attack as a terrible loss of life has been avoided. Next, the best way to sidetrack the people's questions is to claim 'Indian hand' in Karachi Airport attack. Do you really think the weapons used in attack are marked 'MADE IN INDIA' ? Certainly, some forces are at work to disrupt the peace between two countries and create hurdles in normalization. The terrorist attack on Indian consulate just before Modi's swearing in ceremony and today's one are a grim reminder of the gigantic challenge.

Aysha Jun 09, 2014 07:20am

I wonder sometimes, Terrorists have attacked 100s of times in past few years, but they NEVER attack Lahore (punjab). Does anyone have an answer why they spare punjab?

H Jun 09, 2014 07:21am

Wake up Pakistanis. India is NOT the enemy. You have enemies of the state within your own country. Join hands with India and get your country out of this religious fundamentalism. Where is the world going and where are you guys. Such a shame.

Pakistani Jun 09, 2014 07:23am

It seems like the Raw and foriegn agencies have become Angels and if there is any terrorist attack in Pakistan and in any corner. IT MUST BE TALIBAN or SUCH GROUPS. Where are these guys getting all these Automatic machine guns and stuff??? Why not investigate the Indian role in Afghanistan? How did they jump to a conclusion on 26/11. Isnt this 8/6 for Pakistan? WHy are we soo KIND and Blindfolded when it comes to INDIAN terrorists??

Azhar Jun 09, 2014 07:23am

@MEDUSA Are you kidding me. Do you really think that Indian arms would have been recovered. We have been feeding terrists for decades and we are sowing what we reaped

The real issue is overpopulation, lack of education and science, and reliance on archiac principle to run the country. Another one is not letting the educated inhabitants of the city and the founders of the country to run their city. You shall reap what you sow.

Saif Riza Jun 09, 2014 07:30am

Now the policy of appeasement should be abandoned . We should wage a decisive war on them.

IKE Jun 09, 2014 07:33am

Hold on your congrats, please. We the humble and irrelevant People of Pakistan ask the government in-charge and the mighty army, please tell us how the terrorist got inside the airport, and what steps did you take after the naval base and kamra attack? Whatever you did (or did not do) has not worked. It is ok to say that you failed. It is not ok to make up stories. We the people, the weakest segment of Pakistan, request that some heads should role and some higher ups should be made answerable. I know that it is a wishful thinking to ask question to the mighty in Pakistan and expect an answer, and know that no answer is coming. But someday it will be possible.

omer khan shaheen Jun 09, 2014 07:36am

@Rahul Thanks for the advise regarding acknowledgements, I recommend the same to my Indian friends, in good faith! Else the region is on the verge of destruction. "Terrorism direct or indirect is terrorism and it only gifts terrorism back". We must understand, we will remain neighbors forever!, therefore, Stop it, before ignorance on both sides take over!, "Sadly, only the good will lose".

St Ives Jun 09, 2014 07:36am

This is unacceptable. Innocent lives are being lost everyday. Eliminate the miscreants! Make their faces known via media and their outcome. If people believe this was done is secrecy, that is complete nonsense. Someone knew about them/this attack. Citizens need to wake up and start coming forward. If ordinary citizens think that they would suffer collateral damage if they came forward, do they think they themselves would not run into such a situation in the future? Its a misconception and the correct action is spread the phrase 'If you see something, say something'. Put it up on billboards, advertise on media (TV, radio, news, websites). A secure 'tip line' needs to be setup for anyone with information to call. If the police are corrupt, involve the rangers, if they are spread out too thin, the 'tip line' should ring at either with the army or intelligence community. Active involvement of every member of the society will make these people know never dare to pull something like this ever again.

Raj Muthusamy Jun 09, 2014 07:37am

Perpetrators of the Mumbai massacre are roaming feely in Pakistan till today. They are also considered as heros. The result is here to see. If you set your neighbor's house on fire, it will spread to your house also.Sorry for the victims and security personal who lost their lives.

Syed Zee Jun 09, 2014 07:37am

@Ishrat My dear Ishrat, 9/11 happened because there was no such need to enforce strict checking, it was the rosy days for US and for the rest of the world. After 9/11, USA and the rest of the world has changed a lot and so does the security arrangements and security agencies, except in Pakistan. Pakistan has become the epicenter of the attacks by militants and terrorists and yet, our law enforcements and intelligence agencies are using the primitive and useless method to capture or kill terrorists. When we have people hired based on sifarish and fake degrees, thats what exactly happened in Karachi Airport and its not going to stop here, it will continue to bite the back unless the entire disgusting system of getting the relatives and friends on the higher posts and not let the competitions and talented people to come forward. Specially i am disgusted by the attitude of this flimsy guy Qaim Ali Shah, he is old and ragged that his brains cells are dead and yet he is still working and not let another person to come forwards.

Omar Jun 09, 2014 07:39am

This is being funded and organized by India and Afghanistan. If this is had occurred in India, they would be blaming Pakistan, after the first shot was fired. Over here we blame our government for not having proper security and our Army. Yet is the Army and the Security forces that our giving up their lives fighting this. Wake up and unite, this is India and RAW doing this here and all over Pakistan.

ibrahim Jun 09, 2014 07:44am

Wow I am astounded at some of the comments made by my country men. Please stop with the so called patriotism. Blaming issues on India or foreign forces for every single thing will never solve pakistans problem. We Pakistanis need to get this through our skulls that the entire world is not against us. They are not spending their time planning the downfall of Pakistan. It is the us Pakistanis who are responsible for it. We all need to man up and take the blame and responsibility of our nation's hapless condition. Secondly we should stop living in the fairy tale that Allah will help us. Allah only helps those who help themselves. We should start seeing the problems through a realistic point of view and first admit that we ourselves are the architects of our nation's conditions.?

Listen to this sharjeel guy (if i am naming him correctly), in the posted video where he is talking to the reporters. He said they came to the airport on hadayat of "MUHTARAM" zardari and "MUHTRAM" Bilawal? Why is he calling them "myhtaram"? if those two had not ordered, no one will come to the airport? Why did he even bring them up? Looks like he is one of zardari's paid ghulam who is not leaving an opportunity to praise his boss

@AliPasha terrorists have partnership and links with arms smugglers and fellow terrorist organisation around the world. Like for instance fighters from pakistan are going to syria to fight. These which are blowing up every nook and corner of pakistan have deep contacts with other organisations (around the world) who can help them. And yes all of them do it in the name of islam.

Noroz khan Jun 09, 2014 08:09am

Thanks to our distinguished and brave Armed Forces and S.S.G Commandos who cleared Karachi airport of the terrorists very quickly. I believe Karachi Police and Sindh Rangers had no ability and courage to fight and destroy the terrorists at Karachi Airport. Government must clear the area around Karachi Airport from Talibans and Afghan refugees who are a constant threat to Pakistan security.

Tariq K Sami Jun 09, 2014 08:13am

With modern weaponry a small gang can take over any building or Airport. It will take a few hours to clear this mess. The have no support in the masses this is why they have to resort to such suicidal attacks. We should not hunker down. We do not want this siege mentality.

numbersnumbers Jun 09, 2014 08:19am

After reading comments, it is plain that most people do not understand the difficulty of providing "foolproof" security for soft targets such as airports with their extensive perimeter areas! Terrorists can pick the time and place of their choosing after extensive surveillance of the target, and can usually overwhelm the first security forces they encounter! The success of the defense rests with their preplanned response tactical teams who must isolate the terrorists, secure the target area, and then eliminate the threat! Only good intelligence (and luck) can prevent /interrupt an attack, and effectively dealing with the scourge of terrorism often requires operating under the same respect for the law that the terrorists embrace!

khan Jun 09, 2014 08:27am

they got into the naval base, with ease, they got into the airport, with ease, one day they will get into parliament house, no worries there too cause no one is there anyway. before our generals praise the shaheed in this matter, they must set an inquiry into how a security lapse happened, and kick the responsible one out. if there were any good measures in place, these people need not to die and would be with their loved ones this morning. samajh aye kuch?

Saddique Jun 09, 2014 08:39am

someone Jun 09, 2014 09:10am

@Omar WOW Pakistani hypocrisy at its best, Are you not doing the same thing you blame India does?

Zeeshan Jun 09, 2014 09:10am

It is sheer lack of vision, planning and stupidity of our government that the airports which is always a crucial and sensitive location for any country has no biometrics/RFID entry cards, how come they easily entered just by showing the fake ID's with fake data? the intelligent security system doesn't cost billions, and it is more crucial than having an overhead trains which looks stupid and ostentatious to the country where it lacks simple procedures and basic infrastructures. They showoff government needs to wake-up and leave the habit of oh-i-see style of governance.

Khyber Shah Jun 09, 2014 09:11am

Who is going to ask questions about poor intelligence and lax security? Such attacks on sensitive institutions have become all too common. Is it not a failure once again? As usual, fingers will be pointed at foreign elements.

imranrahbar Jun 09, 2014 09:14am

what security, and where it is to be found in Pakistan!!!

Zia Jun 09, 2014 09:17am

there is nothing like good taliban or bad taliban all are terrorists and the Govt of Pakistan should understand, its all nonsense what they are doing - the so called peace talks. Why there is compulsion for talks - are they sympathizers of terrorists?? or do they have stakes in the talks??? are they afraid of any revelation ttp might make as they seem to have helped Nawaz league in assuming power. So what is all this about the peace talks, Govt has to be clear on this. There is no word like peace talks in regard to TTP so do not waste energies and be honest with the people of Pakistan. These attacks will continue as long as Govt plays like a toy in the hands of terrorists(TTP)

Indian Jun 09, 2014 09:24am

Its shocking when innocent people get killed: but, if it happens on regular basis, the entire population must wake up & call for revolution to end this. ZERO tolerance for TERRORISM should be the SOP for the subcontinent if people of the subcontinent have to survive. The Writing is on the WALL. May be we need another Jinnah or Abdul Kalam Azad to get us out of this EVIL. And yes, Pakistan establishment must stop being selective while dealing with terrorism.

Sachal Jun 09, 2014 09:28am

Is it a security lapse or just inadequate security measures ?

Sajjad Sarwar Jun 09, 2014 09:41am

Social injustice, economic vulnerability and deprivation of fundamental rights has led enemies to avail every opportunity to exploit the less privileged segment of society. Problem is not tactical or political, it's economic. I am sure most of the attackers were Pakistani nationals. You can not protect people from people living within them. Nothing is more dangerous than a man who has got nothing to lose, fueled by anger and revenge, and ignited by the anti-state opportunists. Eradicate the social injustice, terrorism will be eradicated.

Adventurer Jun 09, 2014 09:42am

When pakistan was liberal nothing of this sort could happen, but now the extremists the religious fanatics. May Allah protect it from going the Somalia way. Why the Government is handicapped in finishing off the extremists - are their hands tied that they are unable to act or they do not want it to be that way?

Um Jun 09, 2014 09:43am

It would be better if the govt. carries a thorough investigation for once !

And for all my Indian frnds posting here .. the Pakistani para military forces are capable enough to control 26 / 11 like attacks swiftly like they did last night .. And we are capable of controlling any miscreants in our country .. However our neighbor on the East is not helping the cause through continuous funding of these militia through arms, ammunition and financial backing from the western front .. Only after they stop aiding these terrorist organizations through their military and intelligence presence in Afghanistan, Iran and Balochistan can we be able to coup up with the internal issues.

And ffs, stop crying over 26 / 11, the people accused in those attacks are not behind these attacks, nor that is their agenda or capability to carry out such attack !

Karan Jun 09, 2014 09:44am

May God be with the brave men of the Pakistani forces fighting this cowardly and inhumane attack and may God also bless the soles of the innocent victims and members of the Pakistani forces who have lost their lives in this attack.

What can anyone gain from such attacks on the innocent? Also makes me wonder what is the permanent solution of removing such hatred in the hearts and minds of those who plan and arrange for such attacks? How low can some power hunger people stoop?

I don't think any kind of negotiation will forever quench the thirst for power of the perpetrators. Use of force by the government or counter-terror measures will also lead to some casualties or innocent being killed which will only give people who are the masterminds behind these attacks more opportunities to plague the minds of the families and the kin of the dead and injured.

Salute to the brave Pakistani soldiers who are risking their lives to keep the civilians safe.

Tahir Abbas Jun 09, 2014 09:47am

Please stop any thing else for a while. Focus on terrorism.Eradicate it if you can, or negotiate with them. But find a solution.

khanm Jun 09, 2014 09:52am

It is purely because of being non vigilant and lapse in our security apparatus...folks it seems like Security is most superstition entity. It does not exist in Pakistan,. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all... with that daring attack of militant, i would say with certainty. our security apparatus and agencies are useless...

How come Military declare that only 10 terrorists and declared 4 hrs of operation completed? premature conclusion, they are not flushing out militants from small house they are trying to flush out from International Air Port, they have not done combing operation before declaring the operation is closed...

Sorry guys for what ever has happened from morning, do ask for military to perform combing operation in every nook and corner of the air port., it would take a day plus to complete the declaration,

Muhammad Qamer Hussain Jun 09, 2014 09:56am

The way "Foreign militants" or "anti-state actors" are planning the attacks and their sophistication , why the Paki intelligence and military and other law enforcement agencies are not coping up with the militants attacks ? This simply means their must be a lack of coordination among them which is continuously creating loopholes for militants to strike govt installations. If militants had acquired the "Fake IDS" is there no proper check on how to catch the "Fakers" ? Govt is spoiling the budget money on unnecessary non developmental projects why it cannot be spent on acquisition of "electronic ID" checking machines ? Militants are changing their tactics so we need to remain a step ahead of them by making security institutions strong and rapid to any mishap . But they are busy on prodding the land and not emulating themselves to read the terrorists minds. So who has to face the brunt ? Of course Ordinary people who are present at the wrong place at the wrong time just to become the victim of negligence of someone.

What will it take for the leaders of Pakistan to abandon the myopic policy of appeasing and lying prostrate before the Jihadists? Negotiations with them is a fool's errand. Mount a full-fledged operation and continue to fight until the very last of these barbarians has been wiped off.

Mailk Ajmal Khan Jun 09, 2014 10:04am

New projects and new same old crisis management. Follow the money trail.

Gaurav Arya Jun 09, 2014 10:04am

The report about Indian arms is probably not true. In such an attack, the perpetrators usually die but the weapons are always recovered by security forces. Even if India did order an attack like this (not likely at all), they would plan better and give the terrorists local weapons which can be found in plenty in Pakistan, so that the act is not traced back to them. I think its the work of the Taliban. I am also surprised that all attacks happen everywhere in Pakistan except Punjab. Why?

David Jun 09, 2014 10:08am

@Syed . . . . . this is not a wise crack ! New York, London, Madrid, New Delhi . . . do you feel they had inadequate security ??? attacks are always targeted towards the cracks in the system. Pakistan is an easy target of finger pointing.

Ahmad Ali Rafi Jun 09, 2014 10:08am

I want to ask the President, the Prime Minister and the related govt officers that why did this even happened? They all are responsible for this act.

Najma Jun 09, 2014 10:08am

Pakistan is very capable of setting a new low. I empathize with all those living abroad who show more concern on individual basis than the prime minister of Pakistan. Did you hear from any person of responsibility. NS and his cronies might be thinking of managing this from Dubai. Pakistanis should learn parachute landing since no airline would want to travel to Pakistan any more. Shame on Sindh and Pakistan govt.

Ahmad Ali Rafi Jun 09, 2014 10:09am

Any news on the flights, when they will resume?

Imaram Jun 09, 2014 10:09am

well i see interesting correlation between these attacks for example after mumbai attack there was attack on GHQ pindi , then there was an attack Pakistan Naval station in karachi

then there was another attack indian consulate in Kabul it was followed by suicide attack in Islamabad in a hotel and attack .

then there was an attack indian mission in herat in afghanistan and it was followed by attack in Karachi international airport ...

Riz Jun 09, 2014 10:11am

Trust IK to give an irresponsible comment like this when the nation needs to stand united against terrorists. How can he say that the government's policy has failed at this time? Mr Khan, this is not the occasion for political point scoring! Your true colours have been revealed and those who voted for you have been dismayed!

Ali Jun 09, 2014 10:12am

@TKhan Yes Maybe it is irrelevant for some, however My comment was made an hr into the incident after I read the news online, the event of passing by the airport and the thought of going inside the Airport premises was still very much fresh.. and reading the news was an emotional experience... Maybe it doesn't matter to you cuz you don't have a family, or maybe cuz you wrote the comment many hours later after having completed your sleep... But one thing is for sure that your lengthy comment with a "sarcastic" spin on it, was definitely irrelevant.

Riz Jun 09, 2014 10:13am

We must not succumb to fear by negotiating with terrorists. They should be shown the full force of the law enforcing agencies!

I appeal to all the administrators in Pakistan and Karachi especially to conduct an interal investigation on lapses happening within the security establishment.

@Khurram We must destroy the hornet's nest in Waziristan. Then we may go for remaining in rest of the country. Sounds logical?

Altaf Hussain, Mumbai Jun 09, 2014 10:37am

Are these Good Talibans or Bad Talibans? With Gul Bahadur deciding to bite the hands that fed him for decades, the good-bad syndrome seems to have come full circle. For heavens sake, wake up - go after them lock-stock-barrel, after them, after they all are stripes of evil.

M.M.Sherazi Jun 09, 2014 10:43am

The Government should take this traumatic situation and moment as an opportunity to wiping-out the hide-outs of terrorists, operating from various parts of the country. It is high time to take up the boldest and conspicuous action in eliminating terrorists groups and dismantling their sanctuaries. Pakistan Army has always been the front line rescuer of the nation during such appalling situations. The political leaders should be held accountable for propagating against the counter terrorism efforts of the PAK Army and causing and promoting splitting of public opinion. The nation cannot afford more blood- shedding and deprivation of innocent lives, by sheer efforts of the political parties in scoring political mileages. It is time to safeguarding the nation in general and pride of Pakistan in particular by bringing peace in place as the one and only option, no matter, what does it take and whom does it take.

Naseer Jun 09, 2014 10:46am

Still Govt want to negotiate

Vivek Mane Jun 09, 2014 10:48am

I amazed to see TTP spoke persons wording -

"Actually, we had planned very earlier and wants to execute earlier too, it is just that some peace talk drama was going on so we thought let's postpone it."..

Azam Jun 09, 2014 10:52am

This is beyond sad. May God bless all the departed souls

R khan Jun 09, 2014 10:53am

just one request to the govt of pak eliminate the roots of all these brutes

Himanshu Agarwal Jun 09, 2014 10:53am

Don't know what to say. May god bless courage to good men to fight this. This reminds me of Mumbai It is high time Pakistan should introspect it's ways. And bring unruly elements under control for the good of all.

I wish Pakistan to come out of this dark and difficult age and witness new light of peace and prosperity.

Syed Jun 09, 2014 10:54am

Dears, More than the attack itself what is more disturbing is that today onwards you will see mumbling response from most political parties, apologetic comments (with ifs and buts), justifications and conspiracy theories from religious parties, poor guys police and rangers are anyway ill equipped compared to terrorists. Courts will find no credible evidence to punish even a dog on the street. This is how we are different from rest of the world !

Madywani Jun 09, 2014 10:57am

I guess one needs to give some attention to this, that it is a "message to the Pakistan government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages,

zk Jun 09, 2014 11:01am

These people need to be sorted out with no mercy. Mr Nawaz Sharif, no more negotiations with these parties.

Ammar Jun 09, 2014 11:03am

A question... to Govt, Imran khan, Jamat-e- Islami and all similar variants... so u still want the peace talks...???

paki Jun 09, 2014 11:05am

To all those on this forum, stop writing absurd things..stop blaming the govt. Salute to the security forces who are fighting 24x7x365 days with these stupid people, risking their lives.

AW Jun 09, 2014 11:07am

With TTP taking responsibility for the attack on Karachi airport, the situation is utmost serious. Since civilian law enforcement is corrupt and has failed, the federal government should suspend civilian rule in Karachi and hand over control of the city to the Army for one year, so the Army can search every house for confiscation of weapons and arrest of all unlawful elements to be tried in the ATC. After success in Karachi , the same method needs to be used in all cities one by one which will clean up Pakistan

Michael Desouza Jun 09, 2014 11:10am

Why was there no air support and helicopter surveillance during the overnight operation to cover such a vast area of the airport?

Khalid Jun 09, 2014 11:15am

rajesh malik Jun 09, 2014 11:24am

Very Sad news. Pakistan Establishment must take strong action to control terrorism. If Society living in fear then it become hindrance to growth and prosperity.

Asim Jun 09, 2014 11:24am

That is the most stupid comment I have read so far

Sarfraz Ali Jun 09, 2014 11:25am

The enemy is with in us and unless we clearly make bold moves to separate those enemies with in us, this kind of incidents would continue. It is a pity that so many number of enemies with war weapons entered and started their operation as a normal thing! Either those were already working there and entered quite easily due to several factors which we all know.

rajesh malik Jun 09, 2014 11:28am

Very sad news. Pakistan establishment must take strong actions to control such incidents. Society if living is fear is hindrance to growth and prosperity.

Our successive governments have failed to realize the gravity of this menace they are totally incompetent to handle this rampant terrorism across the country whether it is our boarders with Iran or in our most populated cities like Karachi

I think what you mean to say is PML-N was never attacked.

Time for Pakistan to wake up, who is the real enemy.

Avijit Kumar Jun 09, 2014 01:05pm

There should be no compromise with justice. innocent lives lost sud be answered with clearing the very roots of terrorism. The more it delays with useless peace talks the more the country cripples over a longer time. And generations suffers.

Suq Madieq Jun 09, 2014 01:09pm

@muhammad adnan And then when enough of Pakistanis move to an area of US, they want the sharia there and want to make that paradise like their home they ran away from. Most Hippocratic bunch you all are.

jamshed Jun 09, 2014 01:12pm

@paki, If security forces were really fighting 24x7x365 days risking their lives, how come they were in Cantonments and had not ringed fenced the country's main gateway Airport? Why is that we spend billions of dollars, indeed one-third of our total budget on security and still feel so insecure in our own homeland? Why is it that the security forces this morning declared "Mission Accomplished" then reported more gunfire coming from terrorists?

Clearly, there is lax Intelligence. Clearly, security is not up to par. Clearly, that as Pakistanis we feel insecure after having spent billions to make our country secure. We need to stop the blame game. We will continue to be our own worst enemies if can't flush out the terrorists who live amongst us

butterfly Jun 09, 2014 01:13pm

what a well played orchestrated drama... no one without a boarding pass can imagine crossing that deep into an airport, almost on the runway..... everything smells fishy.... For heaven's sake! for how long will you fool us into believing there was a "foreign" hand in this, and that our security forces knew nothing of this! It is definitely an inside job... My message for these hooligans is: do whatever you want, but please spare the poor people of Pakistan and their lives at least from the dirty politics that you are playing!

Fahd Jun 09, 2014 01:18pm

@Syed Ethopia does not have enemies as big as us.

Mujtaba Jun 09, 2014 01:19pm

Its the failure of our army not the govt. Our army has old arms including fighter jets to tanks to helicopters. Our f16s were used in 1970s our helicopter mi - 17 is from 1970s as well while India will soon be buying the fifth stealth jet and they already have mi 35s which will soon be replaced by even a better helicopter the American AH-64 Apache.

Condolences to grieved families, may ALL MIGHTY ALLAH bless the departed souls with HIS choicest blessings, still Nawaz, Imran(PTI) and Siraj (JI) wants negotiated settlement with these butchers. They are buying their lives from these butchers. None of their kith and kin has suffered.

Enough is enough now ARMY should take over, and clean the slate including corrupt Politians, Bureaucrats, Police, state organizations.

Anuj Rahul Joshi Jun 09, 2014 01:27pm

I am glad the opereation is over and Uzbek looking terrorists were found, belonging to TTP, who took responisbility for thr strike. Will the good talib-bad talib debate still run thru GHQ? Will the keeping of strategic assets, while sending SSG commandos to fight some terror attacks continue as a state's strategic action plan? God forbid, will SEALs ferret away Mullah Omer from Pakistan in the near future / kill him through a drone strike witin Pakistan?

Basically what I am saying is - do the lives of Pakistanis not matter to the deep state?

Viking Star Jun 09, 2014 01:35pm

It looks like the terrorists are far more intelligent and updated with technology and intelligence. I read in one newspaper that the terrorists used some blood clotting injections injections as well. I live in Karachi and when you go through Gulistan e Jauhar, a small road that leads to old airport, one can see from the road the parked planes. Even after fighting terrorism for so many years, how could our intelligence ignore such an easy access for the terrorists? And that too for our major national asset? It is easy to blame TTP or any foreign hand, but that wont rid our intelligence from how updated they should be and how to safeguard our airports or any important installation. I commend the job of our security forces in dealing with situation. But the question remains, why did such an incident happen in the first place? Why are our installations such an easy target for terrorists? This is not the first instance, GHQ, Mehran Airbase and now Airport? For God's sake please educate our intelligence and update them with information and technology to handle such situations. Long Live Pakistan. Insha Allah we will soon get rid of terrorism menace.

Ali Akthar Jun 09, 2014 01:38pm

Patrol the Airport using Helicopters.

Imran Jun 09, 2014 01:51pm

I wish everyone commenting realize what they owe to this country. Its good to pray and hope for the best, but we seem to forget, Allah helps those who help themselves, Allah won't change the state of a nation, who doesn't want to change it by itself. We need to move for our prayers to get answered. We brought in a incapable Govt and are satisfied with it, as a result such events will keep happening, people will die without any of their faults. We brought in leaders in power who can't handle these killers. But our leaders are from amongst us, they are mirror image of us, if not all, a lot of us deserve all this for our doings. In an Islamic country where there is no Islam, this was bound to happen, where you can bribe to get anything done, and it is mandatory now. Where teachers, Ulamas, Doctors commit more serious crimes than others what you expect from that nation. The only solution to all this if we wake up and guard the rope of Allah and do what HE has commanded, otherwise we are all doomed.

Zafar Jun 09, 2014 01:54pm

Youtube was banned for insulting our Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon Him) y not removing the bigoted anti-Islamic video. I think you need to read your history -- just read about what Hazrat Omer did to the Muslim man who -- only by insinuation -- insulted the prophet by not accepting the Prophet's decision against him, and for a Jewish trader wit whom he was dealing.

The problem is that ignorant people like you have been given access to comment and mislead others.

Syed Mohammad Jun 09, 2014 03:26pm

With over two dozen intelligence agencies, various security agencies and a full fledged Airport Security Force, with the precedence of two similar attacks on Mehran base and Peshawar Airport in the near past, one fails to understand how such an incident can take place. Karachi International Airport, the biggest hub of air transport in this country was left so insecure? This will have severe consequences on the international air traffic. The people/agency responsible has proved their incompetence. This is a case of gross negligence. Their negligence has caused the lives of many innocent civilians. Let's see what action and how soon the responsible persons are tried. We are not interested to know which country weapon was used. The question is how could any weapon be brought in to the most sensitive area which is supposed to be heavily guarded. It's only the poor citizens on the road who are harassed by these security agencies even if they are with their families.

Adil Jun 09, 2014 03:39pm

I pray to Allah that our leaders have a moment of clarity of thought, and make that final decision to all after and eliminate all ALL militants from our country. There is no more room for good and bad militants in this country. There is no more room for negotiations with TTP in the hopes that they will kill fewer of us. That is shown to be a failed policy decision. We should launch multi-front offensive against them, to take out all their strong holds, all over the country from FATA, to Quetta to Karachi, and in Islamabad the Red Mosque and its network of surrounding mosques that have been serving as the front and hiding grounds for terrorists.

jake Jun 09, 2014 03:43pm

PTI and Jamat-e-Islami are still interested in opening the TTP's office, they will never condemn the attack and would continue to hate innocent people who get killed regardless whether it is a church, mosques and temple. They have a blood on their hands for supporting Taliban.

jake Jun 09, 2014 03:47pm

Danial Jun 09, 2014 03:54pm

@Just Someone they did. Terrorists were intercepted within hours and the area was sealed off. The response was amazing and with the amount of ammunition it shows that the attack could've been much much worse

@independentthinker i dont know by which mentality you had given the remarks for criticising pak security forces so to give you a pleasing answer in france in germany on usa plains were hijacked so what u say abt them and about there secuirty forces is it possible in europe and germany people are not safe as well over there do u know when u gona die ? so dont point put fingers ......we are the naotion who comes upfront in any thing any war not like u ohhhhhhhhhhhh is there any safe place ....shame on you Jun 09, 2014 04:12pm

clean the cities...start search operations. try to control the smuggling of weapons than u r safe...

Michael Desouza Jun 09, 2014 04:12pm

What was the TTPs real motive....just to create chaos, kill security guards or did they think they could take over the airport with just 10 men......or did something else happen while the whole city's attention was diverted to the airport. Is it possible this was a decoy???............that they managed to move more arms in the city etc.

khanm Jun 09, 2014 04:15pm

The security guards should be given arm when at the air port, not at their home, they passed all security on the streets to get to the airport with arms. No one knew if they are real security or fake, (terrorists). That means any one can do this. So stupid.

ashutosh sharma Jun 09, 2014 06:03pm

Is it Taliban's religion of 'peace'?

Last Word Jun 09, 2014 06:12pm

With so many terrorists attacks taking place, why the civilian government not questioning and probing the failure of intelligence agencies in Pakistan, one of which is claimed to be the best in the world. The ease with which the terrorists strike in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi clearly indicate their large presence in all major cities with support system provided by their apologists within the security and intelligence agencies. Even though many attacks have taken place in all these major cities in the past, but no hideouts have ever been reported to be raided or busted, which should be a matter of grave concern to all people living in these cities as such attacks may continue with more intensity than before. If terrorism is to eliminated in Pakistan, accountability of all security and intelligence agencies is a must otherwise country is heading for a complete break in law and order scenario.

khan Jun 09, 2014 06:13pm

So, after all this, the PM has ordered to negotiate with TTP, ARE YOU SERIOUS.... there is no need to talk anymore, its time to declare war against these inhuman group. Finish them once and for all.

Aiyaaz Jun 09, 2014 06:14pm

@Aysha. The money given by USA to Pakistan is being siphoned off to TTP. Even Barack Obama conceded that fact once.

Washim Jun 09, 2014 06:21pm

Sometime back we helped USA to take down USSR and bore the consequences. Now again, we are bearing fruits of supporting US agenda. Lets make a guess about the number of suicidal bombings in USA after 9/11........ And now compare the numbers with Pakistan............. One wrong decision leading to another and all we can say," God help PAKISTAN"

Indian Jun 09, 2014 06:28pm

Coward act - prayers to the families who have lost their loved ones. Terrorism is bad - these people want to spread hate. It's time all countries create zero tolerance for this. TTT or LeT are same - they want to kill innocent citizens. Kudos to the forces !

Abdul Wajid Jun 09, 2014 06:48pm

Hope they made it to some place safely. Our prayers and sympathies for all the shuhda and their families.

bkt Jun 09, 2014 06:52pm

@MEDUSA > There is nothing more stupid than accusing people based on no proof and our own wild emotions. India may or may not have done it. We know that the TTP is well trained and well armed and against Pakistani interests. For years during Musharraf, militants were not disturbed as they built up their arms and spread their ideology of hate, so we know the capability of the people whom we have let be. Moreover Afghanistan is an old enemy -- in 1948 when Pakistan and India applied for membership of the UN, Afghanistan was the only country to vote against us. Nothing much has changed since then, and they have no love lost for us. Until we capture one of these militants, we cannot say who is behind these attacks.

husain Jun 09, 2014 06:54pm

The only solution now is declare EMERGENCY and military rule. Suspend the so called democracy . Military rule North to South on east to west on every inch of Pakistan soil. See the results in six months.

Your losing faith in your elected government is exactly what the evil doers want! Please rally around your government, your security forces and your administration. Now is not the time for blame-game, nor the time for rubbing salt into wound! This dastardly act would not have been possible without inside help! Locate the corroborators and take them to task. Only way to handle terrorism is with an iron-hand! God be with you! May God deliver you from this evil!

Sherry Comment Jun 09, 2014 07:58pm

I urge the government to take military action against the TTP and wipe them and all terrorist organisations from the face of Pakistan.

Imran Jun 09, 2014 08:08pm

TTP has (AGAIN) shown its sick and murderous face, why do so many Pakistanis still not wish to annihilate them? Can we please make it unlawful for politicians and their families to sequester Security Personnel for VIP duties? We need professional, law enforcing people, not lackeys who obey their superiors, not the law or command responsibilities. The death toll of innocents would have been lower if military and civilian personnel were allowed to do their jobs instead of having to pander to egos.

Sherry Comment Jun 09, 2014 08:20pm

Really sad for the lives lost, may they rest in peace. The whole nation and I am so proud of the security personnel who laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect us. I am not sure our government has learned the lesson - WE DON'T NEGOTIATE WITH TERROR - WE DESTROY THEM! How many more innocent victims have to sacrifice their lives, before our government realizes that these illiterate thugs will not understand any other language. While our leaders are demanding and receiving extra security, it is the ordinary public that tends to suffer for the incompetency of our leaders. I hope this is the last attack and I hope our government has got the message - loud and clear!

I haven't been back to Karachi since I left in 1994. I have friends from Karachi here in the US who fly back regularly and keep telling me the situation keeps getting worse. I keep getting told that "If you thought things were bad when you left in 1994, it's now a 1,000 times worse". When I lived in Karachi, I used to fly with Lufthansa regularly but now I've found out that no western airline even flies to Karachi anymore because the security situation's so bad. My daughter is 10 years old and has never been to Pakistan (we live in the US) and when my wife (who's American) asks me if I ever want to take my daughter to Karachi and show her where I grew up, my answer has always been "When the situation improves". It seems like that's never going to happen so I guess she'll have to learn about Karachi and Pakistan from books and movies. That's a pretty sad testament to what Pakistan has become. Strangely, I really don't miss Pakistan at all.

@AW Indian made weapons with clear markings in Chinese/Korean script! This was clearly shown by the television networks several times. The terrorist have been identified as Uzbeks. But blame India. Why only India? You forgot Israel and the USA. Next time remember to include them too!

M Jun 10, 2014 04:24am

Dr.S.A. Hyder Jun 10, 2014 04:25am

@Adil Our leaders can not do it. Our army can not do it. Our judges have failed us. Red Mosque is a clear proof. The militants were let go by the "Honourable"

@MEDUSA Kindly find out the first enemy and deal them accordingly. India is your second enemy, first one is your homegrown enemy. Instead of become more ignorant try to fix them until they spoiled the entire country. Fanatic people like you are the curse of Pakistan.

Zareef Jun 10, 2014 05:29pm

@Nousheen Khan dear our leaders are not able to take such type of actions......

independentthinker Jun 11, 2014 02:54am

@Ishrat I didn't know box cutters were as dangerous as grenades and assault rifles! In the end, they might have been used to cause much damage, but at the airport itself, I don't think the insurgents would have achieved much by pulling out their box cutters!

independentthinker Jun 11, 2014 02:57am

@waleef ullah usmani No one is undermining their heroic response. My problem is how and why was it allowed in the first place! The terrorists arrived at the airport at 11:15pm and the first person killed was at midnight - what were they doing for 45 minutes and why did no one notice them?

independentthinker Jun 11, 2014 03:29am

@aqi I am not sure what you are trying to say, because your grammar and spelling need much improvement! Having said that, we are not talking about hijacking - we are talking about security breach at the airport, where at most airports around the world, there is very tight security. Karachi Airport, being the busiest airport in Pakistan should have very tight security measures in place. 45 minutes between the time the terrorists arrived at the airport and the first murder that took place is a long time. Where were our security personnel and if these insurgents were just rooming around, why weren't they caught? Maybe, you can't comprehend what I have written, but at least try!

Ayub Jun 11, 2014 03:38am

It's about time the army goes after the rats and eliminate them from the face of the earth for talks ..just flatten their burrows, whatever means it takes. They must be eradicated.

Najamuddin Jun 12, 2014 03:02am

@Indian, dear Indian, I am a Muslim and Pakistani. Comments of yours and of some other lovely Indians expressing neighborly love, compassion and well wishes for Pakistan and for its people, have made my day. In this age of "Kaljug" when the One Human Family coming from and belonging to the same One Creator God been engaged in mutual hatred, violence and self-destruction since long time, your great humanist comments are reflection of a true Indian and more of a true human. The over whelming majority of Indians and Pakistanis, many of them having generations long deeper rooted attachment from the same motherland of Indo-Pak soil, have always been well wishers of each others and longed for friendly relations of mutual love and peace. From all criterion of assessment friendly relations between two neighbors, specially two Nations is always in the best interest of both the countries. But unfortunately the corrupt and incompetent rulers and politicians playing as stooges in the grisly hands of criminally corrupt & divisive bureaucrats, agencies, hatefuls, extremists and evil Mafias who always make their fortune from the dis-unity, blood-shed, dead bodies and ruins of both sides people are responsible for all the aggression, wars, destruction and sufferings of their peace loving country men at both sides. Because of the incompetence of such rulers and politicians their remote control have been in the hands of the worst hate criminals and the worst marauders of peace and humanity both sides, who, since very long time, by their constant intrigues and conspiracies been able to reverse years long peace efforts by causing just one act of aggression or terrorism on either side. In such a scenario my most beloved Indians and Pakistanis brothers and sisters, sons and daughters having sincere feelings of love and well wishes for each others are the true representatives and spokes-persons of Indians and Pakistanis majority. In this crucial age of hatred and division such loving souls at both sides, and, all over the globe are great asset of humanity. God Bless India and my beloved Indian people, God bless Pakistan and my beloved Pakistani people with Unity, true Peace and Prosperity. Amen.
