KOHAT: Six members of a car-lifters’ gang were arrested when they were taking 10 stolen vehicles to Afghanistan in Hangu on Saturday.

Separately, the police also seized five trucks loaded with cattle and flour bags while being smuggled to Afghanistan, said DSP Thall, Ashraf Khan.

He told reporters here on Saturday that the vehicles seized from car-lifters included eights cars and two Suzuki vans, which were lifted from various parts of Pakistan.

Mr Ashraf said that the five seized trucks were transporting 212 cattle and 4,300 bags of flour to Afghanistan.

The police official said that the car lifters had been shifted to unknown location for interrogation after registration of case against them. He said that truck drivers had also been booked and investigation started.

ANP POLLS: Awami National Party’s local chapter elected its office bearers for the year 2014-15 during the annual elections in which about 101 councillors polled their votes on Saturday.

Javed Khattak was elected as president defeating former MPA Musarat Shafi, while Gul Mohammad triumphed as secretary general defeating Masood Khan Khalil.

Similarly, Imtiaz Bangash, Rehman Khan, Tahir Khan and Fazal Hussain were elected as senior vice presidents, respectivley, while Sara Aziz was elected as senior vice president of the party’s women wing.

Shafqatullah got elected for the office of deputy secretary general defeating Abid Bokahri. Mufeed Shah, Imtiaz Khan and Rab Nawaz Bangash were elected as joint secretaries, respectively.

Momina Bangash was appointed as secretary general of women wing, Qazi Zafarullah secretary information, Mohammad Manzoor finance secretary, and Tahir Lachvi culture secretary, respectively.

The elections held at the district council hall were supervised by provincial ANP leaders, including Imran Afridi, Saddaruddin and Inayat Qureshi.

TEACHERS’ SALARIES DEDUCTED: The education department has deducted one-day salary from the salaries of 216 teachers and class-IV employees for absenting duty.

The action was taken by the independent monitoring unit of the education department, which has been constituted by the provincial government to check teachers’ absenteeism to improve education standard at schools.

The unit’s district officer Yousuf Khan presented a report of schools across Kohat for the month April to the deputy commissioner, Amjid Ali Khan, during a meeting here on Saturday.

Mr Yousuf Khan said that they had collected data of 99 per cent schools of the district where some schools were non-functional, some had been occupied by land grabbers, while others were facing teachers’ absenteeism.

He informed the meeting that during the survey 73 male and 55 female teachers were found absent from duties. Similarly, 36 male and 88 female class-IV employees were also absent from their duties.

Mr Yousuf also ordered disciplinary action against the absenting employees of the education department.
