ISLAMABAD: A man wanted to the capital police in fraud cases was caught travelling with a parliamentarian on Thursday.

A police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said on a tip-off the CIA police intercepted a Land Cruiser with a green number plate inscribed with the word ‘Senator’ on Margalla Road, One of the riders introduced himself as a senator and taunted the policemen for stopping his vehicle.

However, the police took the man travelling with the senator into custody after telling him (senator) that he was a proclaimed offender and was wanted by the police in connection with different fraud cases, including cheque dishonour cases worth over Rs1billion.

When the senator put up resistance, the police also took him into custody and shifted him along with the suspect to the CIA centre.

During preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the accused was a relative of the senator who had provided him shelter, the officer claimed.

He said senior police officers were kept in the dark about the arrest and when they got the report from other sources and asked the in-charge of the CIA team to clarify his position, the latter could not justify his decision of not recording the arrest.

The officer said the CIA police released the vehicle and the senator before the matter was brought before senior police officers.

He said the suspect had been spotted in the capital in the recent past but the police did not take action against him.
