KARACHI: A member of the Ismaili community who owned a private school in Lyari was shot dead in the Napier area on Tuesday, police said.

DSP-Eidgah Mohammed Ayub Soomro said that Mohammed Iqbal, 53, left his ‘Prince Grammar School’ in Baghdadi and was driving home in Garden when two assailants riding on a motorcycle intercepted his car on Siddiq Wahab Road, fired at him and rode away.

He sustained a single bullet wound in the neck and was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The DSP said that the victim was an Islamili and the investigators were probing the possible motive for the killing.

Bank manager killed in Site

A bank manager was gunned down in an attack apparently on sectarian grounds in the SITE area on Tuesday.

Area SHO Sohail Khan said that Khurram Hanif Memon, 38, reached the Haroonabad area from his Dhoraji residence in his car. He worked as the manager of the Askari Bank branch in the area.

He said he did not park his vehicle at his usual slot and took it to some distance where he was targeted.

The SHO said that it appeared that the victim had got a phone call before the attack.

He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from where he was shifted to a private hospital, where he died in the evening.

Additional Police Surgeon Abdul Haq said that he suffered a single bullet wound in the head.

SITE SP Fida Hussan Janwari believed that the assailants mistakenly targeted him.

He explained that the victim was a Sunni, but the slogan ‘Ya Hussain’ inscribed on his car made the assailants to believe that he was a Shia.
