KARACHI: A young woman was shot dead outside her home in Liaquatabad on Saturday, police said.

They said the 35-year-old Arifa Rafi was about to enter her home in Liaqutabad C-1 area when two men on a motorbike emerged there and one of them fired a single shot that hit her in the neck.

“The woman was unmarried and living with her brothers,” said Supermarket SHO Anzar-ul-Haq. “The attacker used a TT pistol and a fired single shot that proved fatal. It appears to be a case of personal enmity from the way she was killed.”

‘Bandit’ killed in encounter

A suspected bandit was killed in a police encounter in the Defence area on Saturday, officials said.

They said that a police patrol of the Defence police station spotted some suspicious pillion-riders in Khyaban-i-Jami, Phase-II.

The police signalled them to stop, but they opened fire, claimed Defence SHO Obaidullah Khan. “The police retaliated and after a brief exchange of gunfire they managed to arrest one suspect who sustained bullet wounds. However, his aide sped away.”

The wounded suspect was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he died, he said, adding that the police had also recovered a pistol, cash and cellphones from his possession.

“He has been identified as 35-year-old Aijaz Baloch. The police record suggested that he was arrested last year by the South zone police in several cases mainly related to street crime. However, he was enlarged on bail later,” said the area SHO.

Robbers kill watchman upon resistance

The watchman of a bungalow was killed when he resisted a robbery attempt in the Defence area on Saturday.

Police said that some six bandits barged into a house in the Defence area, held the family at gunpoint and started collecting cash and valuables.

Defence SHO Obaidullah Khan said that the 53-year-old watchman, Abdul Hameed Kashmiri, somehow scuffled with one of the bandits, but he was badly beaten up by them. They used pistols’ butts to hit him in the head and left him unconscious and bleeding.

He said that the injured watchman was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre as soon as the bandits left the place, but he died from excessive bleeding.
