Musharraf not a traitor, says PML-Q chief

LAHORE: Chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has said that former army chief Gen Pervez Musharraf is not a traitor.

Commenting on Thursday on the trial of the former president on treason charges, Mr Hussain remarked: “An army chief cannot be a traitor.”

Talking to reporters, he added: “The word ‘traitor’ is used for those who join the enemies of the country. It should not be used for former head of the army.”

The PML-Q president said the case against Gen Musharraf should not be linked to his illness. “Nothing will come out of this case because this is a political case.”

Mr Hussain said he had spoken to Musharraf’s doctor who said the former army chief had heart ailment but now he was out of danger.

An extract from the Constitution of Pakistan in response to ex-President Gen. (Retd.) Musharraf's trial for imposing Emergency Rule on 3rd November, 2007 Part X: Emergency Provisions Article 232 - Proclamation of emergency on account of war, internal disturbance, etc. If the President is satisfied that a grave emergency exists in which the security of Pakistan, or any part thereof, is threatened by war or external aggression, or by internal disturbance beyond the power of a Provincial Government to control, he may issue a Proclamation of Emergency Article 236 - Revocation of Proclamation, etc. The validity of any Proclamation issued or Order made under this Part shall not be called in question in any court.
