MULTAN, Dec 8: A report on revealed that among all the southern Punjab districts maximum number of cases of violence against women were reported in Multan.

According to the report issued by Multan Civil Society Network, during the last three months (September to November) 27 per cent of the total reported incidents of violence against women, including honor killings, acid attacks, kidnappings, killings, setting on fire, rape, domestic torture, suicide, police torture and Wani, took place in Multan district.

During these months total 464 cases of violence against women were registered across the south Punjab, out of which 123 were registered only in Multan district.

The report said that 278 women were killed in the region in 2013 against 199 of 2012, while 265 were kidnapped against 606 of 2012. Similarly, 14 acid throwing incidents were registered in the region against 53 of the last year, while eight women were set on fire against 17 of 2012.

It said 230 women were raped in south Punjab against 329 of 2012, 359 were the victims of domestic torture against last year’s 548. As many as 342 women committed suicide against 474 of 2012 and 60 were killed in the name of honor against 122 of 2012, the report mentioned. It disclosed that total 2,627 violence cases were registered in 2011, 2,348 in 2012 and 1,556 till October 2013. — Staff Correspondent
